FAQ

I get a 68 POST code with my X58 motherboard and a i7 980x CPU.

Last Update: 2019/05/31

If a i7 980x CPU is being installed on a X58 motherboard that has not run one before and the system does not give video as well as the POST code display shows a 68 it could be the board may require a BIOS update.

POST code 68 is also a memory error.

  • If another lower end CPU is not available to test the board and update the BIOS verify that the issue happens with one stick of RAM in the colored slot furthest from the CPU (slot 5).
  • Reset the BIOS by removing the battery and unplugging the power for 5~10 minutes.  You will have to reset any setting that were previously set in the BIOS.

If this is a new system build:
  • Check the CPU socket for bent or missing pins.  The memory controler is on the CPU for these motherboards and a damaged socket can also give memory errors.
  • Try the motherboard on a non-conductive surface to eliminate any grounding or shorting.

If the memory has been eliminated and the BIOS cannot be updated locally please call us at 1-888-881-3842 or create a ticket under the details for the motherboard in your EVGA Members Account's registered products list so we can work to resolve this issue.
