FAQ

On my X58 when enabling AHCI in BIOS I get the options "Mechanical presence switch" and "Cold Presence switch" what are these options?

Last Update: 2009/07/29

When you enable the AHCI function of your sata ports on your X58, these 2 options deal with the HOT SWAP functionality of AHCI.

Mechanical presence switch:  This is the option that allows mechanical detection of the presence/removal of a drive that was in the system when the board was initially powered on.

Cold Presence switch:  This option allows ports that had no drive connected during post/boot up to remain active and be able to detect a drive connected to it even if booted with no drive detected

NOTE: Please understand this is a still developing technology and is not fully supported by most operating systems,  and while you can attempt these settings they may cause the system to fault or blue screen during normal operation.
