How do I diagnose a Faulty NIC on your Motherboard

Occansionaly after a clean install of windows, or through normal use your motherboard NIC looses connection. Here are several troubleshooting attempts to resolve the issue.

1) First, check to make sure the lights on the NIC are flashing.

2) Try a different ethernet cable and connecting directly to your modem.

3) If problem still persists, try finding your specific motherboard NIC drivers. For nforce series motherboards, try re-installing chipset drivers. For X58 series try installing the Realtek LAN drivers click here. For P55 series boards reinstall the latest network drivers from here.

4) Next try manually repairing the connection. by going to Start -> Control Panel -> Network connections -> Right-click the NIC not connection and click "Repair."

5) Try resetting your CMOS - This can be done by removing the quarter sized battery on the board for about 30 seconds with the system powered off, the putting the battery back in.

6) Try flashing your motherboard to the latest BIOS. BIOS' can be obtained from here.
