For ASUS this has added something to the value proposition of their GTX 465.

Will EVGA follow suit, or is there something already in the works?

This mod apparently doesn't not affect memory bandwidth or ROPs, but enabling more Stream Processors is nice.  :)

Pretty sweet. But why would a company want to do this? It would basically make their 470 cards obsolete, except for the extra video RAM.

Cool! I'm really surprised they'd do this though.

It's solely for ASUS to get competitive advantage sales wise over other vendors like MSI, EVGA, etc.

I honestly would not expect EVGA to release a tool like this. It muddies up the product line too much.

I am amazed that Nvidia left the links/pathways for these additional cores, usually they fuse them off to stop this sort of thing but maybe Nvidia didnt have time to do this or it was not worth the additional cost of fusing off the cores as that's additional work and i guess cost.

They may also be wanting to steal some of AMD's thunder that they had with allowing their 3 cores to be turned into 4 cores.

Its good news for GTX 465 owners and possibly Nvidia and the board partners think the additional memory on the 470 will still give i a market, although they may need to reduce the price of the 470.

I am assuming if this was possible for the 470 or 480 it would have happened by now and the fact that you can only activate 448 cores and not 480 or 512 on the 465 would also suggest that the higher end GPU's were fused and not just disabled in the BIOS.

The GTX470 still is a better card.  This will not affect GTX470 sales.

The GTX470 will still have a BIG advantage:

    GTX470 Advantages:

    50 Texture units (470)
    44 Texture units (465)

    40 ROP units (470)
    32 ROP units (465)

    320-bit VRAM (470)
    256-bit VRAM (465)

If you look @ the benchmarks of the OP's second link, you'll see that the 470 still pulls ahead of the soft-modded 465...

I've been keeping up on this and so far Asus has not acknowledged nor officially released this. In additio,n there has there been only a couple of  reports of people having success with what were apparently early review cards from POV. In fact the one report I did read of someone trying this on a retail card, the tool failed and said his card wasn't upgradable. I'm still very suspicious of this.

I would like to know how the vram misteriously changes from 320bit ram to 256bit ram if its the same board with just 2 chips disabled in the bios?

The GTX 470 has an extra memory controller.  5 memory controllers x 64-bit = 320 bit memory interface.  The GTX 465 has 4 memory controllers (x 64-bit = 256 bit).

    A full GF100 actually has 12x32-bit memory controllers = 384-bit bus each tied to 4 ROP, which is different from GT200 which was 8x64-bit = 512-bit bus.  So a 470 would have 10x32-bit=320 and 40 ROP, a 465 would have 8x32-bit = 256 and 32 ROP.

But ya each 32-bit memory controller I/O has pins on the GPU package that trace out to each individual 128MB memory module.  If that RAM chip isn't there, those memory controllers are useless as they have no memory to control.

This might actually cause problems if the GPU BIOS says there should be RAM chips there and the controllers should be active and they're not, but I haven't researched enough on this to be sure.  It sounds like this is the case however, as the only cards this seems to work on are the ones with 10 RAM chips, same as a 470.

Yeah but what im saying is the asus cards have all 10 chips on them and are identical to the 470.What is keeping the memory bus from being the same if all the chips are there and thier only shut off in the bios?

I think EVGA should release a modified GTX 480/470/465 BIOS that allows for higher voltages.  1.138v on the GTX 480 sucks, 1.087v is even worse.  1.213v or higher would be nice.  With a new cooler I'd probably be running at least 1000/2000/1050 on my GTX 480 with those voltages.  All I need is 1.150v for 900/1800/1050, but the current BETA of EVGA E-LEET is too buggy.

LOL, no, they shouldn't release a new BIOS for all 4xx cards.

I've had 4 of these cards since April 8. Both of my originals were RMA'd.

The 1st one I got back is unbelievable.

But I just got my 2nd one back and guess what? At stock clocks it can't even run OC Scanner without major artifacts. The chip yields just do not support it yet.

Here's another run after a full cool down:

This is lovely -- taken at exactly 2 minutes into the run. Yes, it reads 3,386 artifacts.

It would definitely have to be a "at your own risk" sort of thing.

Try running the OC Scanner without EVGA Precision.  Voltage tuners always tell you to use at your own risk.

Just because it has an ASUS icon doesn't mean ASUS made it.

nah, that's got nothing to do with it. the first screen i took was without precision running. i loaded it to show the clocks.

the second was with precision running for longer but with the same results to show the clocks and that i haven't manipulated anything to produce the result.

also note, the OSD is off so that ain't it either.
