A guy over a forum belonging to a UK store where I used to shop (forum is well know for being hostile to say the least) bought a "Palit GeForce GTX 460 768MB Sonic Platinum Edition" only to find it was far too loud for him and could not believe the review sites claim it was "very quiet".

Now he could have just been fussy and moaning at next to nothing or indeed have a bad airflow in case causing fan to ramp up.

None of the above were the case and now Guru3D have jumped on board to help him get an answer from Palit

Basically the retail cards (not review sites samples) are missing the "VRM Heatsink" and its claimed this can cause the fan to ramp up to cool the card more (Not sure if true as I would assume it goes by core temp but assume Guru3D know what they are talking about).

Here are the Guru3D links :

I personally find it strange Palit claimed Nvidia told them to run 3DMark 2006 as its crap for GPU's and uses CPU more, Vantage is far better (maybe they still run XP) LOL

Your link gave me this :

    "Page not found

The requested page could not be found."

TBH you cannot go by any loudness test on any website, you need be actually there to hear it accurately.

There must be some fact in his complaint if Guru3D have jumped in and the fact remains the cards should be the same.

Well just looking at rodneys video, his card is idling 10 c lower than even my gts250 and I can tell that card is quiet even in the video.Besides, they claim that vrm heatsink actually does anything which I highly doubt it makes that much of a difference. The fan is still blowing air over the vrms.

Glad I preordered the EVGA 1GB EE. A few people I game with were saying I was crazy for not going with Palit for the higher clocks and cheaper price... well, this is why. EVGA's designs are simple but work, and they come with lifetime warranties to boot!

Thanks for posting this, it makes me even happier with my choice. :)

At that shops forum peeps have started to return their Palit 460's and also Gainward as both are lacking the VRM Heatsink and they claim the fan ramps up to a horrid whine very fast.
