Um wow, thanks for the link.  Sounds like they skipped a numbering generation....I guess marketing felt its that much of a leap over the last gen parts.

Looks like highest end cards are shipping first(expect 90). Good because I don't want anything lower than a 480 :D Unless prices force me =P

Probably a hate of odd numbers? lol. They skipped the GT100 series, too.

Nothing Nvidia does with product naming makes any sense to me anymore.

And since it has been awhile since they have done an Ultra namesake, I am waiting for a GTX480 Ultra lol

No don't think so at least not here but I hope for Nvidia's sake there somewhere between $450-$500. This would be a winning price point  then I can definitely buy 3 . Keep your fingers crossed.

My bet is $699.00 for the 480.  Nvidia is known to go for the gusto upon a new generation release.  They did the same with the 8800gtx when it came out.

Here's my guess on pricing, posted in a diff thread and updated with this latest news.....

Still expect pricing to be as follows:
    • GTX 480 = GF100 (full) =  $500-$550 with OC variants at +$10-$15 increments
    • GTX 470 = GF100 (cut-down, downclocked) = $380-$430 with OC variants at +$10-$15 increments
Expecting both of these to be faster than the 5870.
    • GTX 490 = 2xGF100 (cut-down, downclocked) = $600-$700
Expecting this to be faster than the 5970.

GF104 is looking more and more like the mainstream and performance DX11 Fermi-architecture based parts and slated to launch in May/June, which will replace all of Nvidia's existing GT200 and G92 parts in those markets.  Expect these parts to fall in the sub-$300 price range with most of them in the sub-$200 range.  The fastest part should have similar specs to a GTX 285 and perform slightly faster than a 5850 for $300 or so.  I could also see Nvidia saving the GTX 300 series for these GF104 parts......

There's also rumors now of 28/32nm refresh parts from both ATI and Nvidia, which may be ready at the end of Q4 2010 at the earliest, but realistically, we probably won't see refreshes until Q1 2011.  At that point you can maybe start to expect GF100b parts (refreshed GF100) in the $200-$300 range like they are now.  Think similar pricing progression to GT200 to GT200b or G80 to G92.

My bet is $699.00 for the 480.  Nvidia is known to go for the gusto upon a new generation release.  They did the same with the 8800gtx when it came out.

I doubt it'll be that much for a few reasons, Nvidia said they learned their lesson with the GTX 280 launch and they've also stated they're planning a GX2 GF100 variant shortly after the single-GPU parts launch.  If a GTX 480 is priced at $699 that leaves virtually no room for the GX2 part in terms of pricing.

    From AnandTech's Fermi article:

    http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3651&p=7

Ujesh is wiling to take total blame for GT200. As manager of GeForce at the time, Ujesh admitted that he priced GT200 wrong. NVIDIA looked at RV670 (Radeon HD 3870) and extrapolated from that to predict what RV770's performance would be. Obviously, RV770 caught NVIDIA off guard and GT200 was priced much too high.

Ujesh doesn't believe NVIDIA will make the same mistake with Fermi.

Based on current RV870 pricing there's no way a single-GPU GTX 480 costs more than a 5970 unless it convincingly outperforms it......and while it may beat it in some games that don't scale well on the 5970 I don't expect GF100 to convincingly beat it across the board.   There's really no excuse for Nvidia this time around as they know exactly where their competition stands in terms of price and performance.

I don't get it. Why on earth would they skip 300 series?
OK, maybe I'm getting it... Just hypothesizing... There were news of some 300 series cards right, like 310? Maybe they decided to reserve 300 series for all the inferior cards that may or may not be rebrands... And, they moved to 400 exclusively for Fermi based parts... Now it makes sense... I guess...

Chizow I hope you are right.  If these are as fast as they say they are and the price is reasonable I will switch back from ATI.  However if they are overpriced (like most of the 200 series was/is) I will stick in the ATI camp.

Was hoping to have a 380 but I guess 480 makes it sound better :o

I will either find a way, or make one.

I'm going GTX 470. I always find that price : perfomance ratio the high mid levels seem to suit me. CANT WAIT

i am so confused with why they chose to skip 300 series that its funny.

Marketing. 400 is a higher number than 300, they want everyone to think that these are 2x as fast as the current nVidia cards, which is likely not the case. Unless they are all 3xGPU triple slot cards.
