Why is my mother board showing an error 52?

Last Update: 2010/08/02

Error code 52 is often related to a USB device locking up the system. Try disconnecting any external hard drives, flash drives, iPods, etc. Once you have no USB devices connected to the system try booting the system again. If the issue persists, disconnect any internal USB header connections, and then try booting the system again. Determine which device is causing the issue by reattaching them one at a time and testing the system after having connected each one.

It the system will not boot with all USB headers and ports having been cleared of devices, try testing the board outside of the system on a non-conductive surface like a cardboard box or a rubber mat. Once on the matt reduce the system to a bare bone configuration. All that should be connected to the system is the CPU, CPU heatsink, 1 stick of memory, the 8pin adn 24 pin power connectors. Try to boot the system. If it still generates the 52, power down the system and remove the stick of memory. Power the system on, if the board is generating an F3 or F6 replace the stick of memory in a different slot, if the code changes from 52 you may have a bad dimm slot. If the 52 persists, remove the CPU and check for bent pins on the socket. If the pins are all uniform, replace the processor, and try the system again. If the issue persists, finally remove the 8 pin and 24 pin power connectors, followed by the CMOS battery which is a watch battery generally to the bottom right of the board, and wait for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes have passed reinsert the battery with the + facing you, followed by the 8 and 24pin power connectors. Try the system a final time. If the system still fails to POST.
