How do I setup my memory for an X58 Motherboard?

Last Update: 2011/08/27

Prior to starting your comp, you want to make sure that you have your memory latency and voltage on hand, perhaps just take note of it on a notepad.  Below is a example of a memory label.  While this is an older module and not for this board, it is using a standard type label.  Please make note of the hyphenated numbers as well as the voltage (number followed with a V, in this case 2.1, but for P55 and X58 it needs to be between 1.5 and 1.65 volts).

When you first start your new system, the frst thing you need to do is set the memory.  To do this, go to BIOS (DEL key at POST) then to Frequency/Voltage Control.

Select Memory Feature to set memory latency.

The memory in the picture has a latency of 5-5-5-15, now common for this board is 8-8-8-24 and 9-9-9-27, however there are many other options.  Those numbers relate to, in order, tCL Setting, tRCD setting, tRC setting and tRAS setting.  So enter the numbers in from top to bottom, tCL - 5, tRCD - 5, tRC - 5, tRC - 5, and tRAS - 15.  If you memory lists command rate or commands per clock you can enter that in command rate.  if it does not list it, please leave as default.

Now press Escape to go back up one level, and select Voltage Control.  Set DIMM Voltage to what it states on your RAM.  if your ram is DDR3 and is 1.75-2.3 then it is not memory meant for this board, it is for older Intel chipsets or current NVidia chipsets.  Enter in the value on the ram, which should be between 1.5-1.65 volts.  From there press F10 to save and exit.

Keep in mind this is meant for one kit of ram.  if you have 2 kits of ram, you may need to loosen timings or adjust voltage.  You can attempt this on your own if you are having problems, but I would advise contacting your memory manufacturer for getting the optomized configurations for a 6 stick setup.
