Hi guys, I just always wanted to know, are two 980x's compatible with the SR-2? Or do they have to be Xeons? I've heard different things from different places. Thanks!

No, the SR-2 only supports Intel Xeon processors, since they are dual QPI. Retail i7's (i7 9xx) have single QPI lanes, so they won't work.

They have to be Xeon 5500 or 5600 series

I know Intel sells a dual i7 motherboard, if you are stuck with i7s

Great, thanks for the info! I think I read from a comment on anand that the 980x had dual QPIs, but I guess the guy was misinformed. I am not looking to go dual cpu any time soon, I just wanted to make sure.

From all indications the 980x does have dual QPIs, just one is disabled therefore making it an i7.

Remember, both EVGA's compatibility section and Intel's own website have the final word to such inquires. Make a habit of going after the manufacturer for details, and if they don't have it then come here, but they'll usually have it. bucyrus5000 I know Intel sells a dual i7 motherboard, if you are stuck with i7s There is no such product in existence. The Intel 5500 and 5520 chipsets simply do not include support for any i7 LGA1366 processor. Intel separated these on purpose, the similar sockets are for their convinience of reduced manufacturing costs, not ours to mix and match. Otherwise why sell so many Xeons with the capability if one could just get two 920's or 930's much cheaper for the performance? It is however vendor perogative if adding dual-QPI CPU support to X58 is beneficial, since there already are Xeon's meant specifically and only for X58. EVGA was late to that party, BTW. antizax From all indications the 980x does have dual QPIs, just one is disabled therefore making it an i7. If using that logic, then you have to include that all i7 900's are either Gainestowns or Gulftowns, yet Intel choose to give single-QPI Gainestowns a different codename calling them Bloomfield while calling those versions in 32nm Gulftowns regardless.

Based on what? Other than having dual QPI, the X5680 and the 980X have identical specs.

I read several reviews pointing to Xeons out performing i7s. I just don't want to look for them now.

they are faster in terms of overclocking depending on if your i7 is a gem or not.... As for say 2x slower xeon 4 core 8 threads vs a higher clocked six core i7 12 threads the i7 will actually wamp an xeon setup but we are talking about overclocked to some degree against the slower xeons. I learned this lession in college when my quad core spanked 2x slower clocked server xeons. Has been the case ever since=/ The I7 980x's have duel qpi disabled so no you cannot use 2x of them in an sr2 but wow if you could it would be nice=)
