in order to achieve a perfect 7.9 Windows 7 score, users will have to buy a computer powered by at least an 8 core processor!

Yeah I have no idea whether it was through a Windows Update install, but one day my Primary Hard Disk score went from 7.8 to 7.9 without me changing a thing.
It's completely fickle, and I think they're trying to make it sound more scientific than it actually is.

I bet the problem is something simple like the test is either a single-threaded test, or a test that has a limited number of threads.  With a maximim of less than 9 threads, having the extra cores would mean little to the test.  It would be like the single threaded tests of the past where the single or dual core machines stomped the 4 core machines because of generally higher clock speeds.

I understand that what drives the score down the most are the type of hard drive (SSD vs. regular HD) the systems has.

    Cheers!

Sounds like FSX(Flight Simulator X). Microsoft said the same thing about it when it came out. That it would be a couple of years until a PC was built that could max out the game because they designed it on purpose that way so that as new hardware came out you would be able to up the game settings to maximum. AFAIK it's still true because last time Tom's hardware did some benchmarks with  FSX and a core i7 extreme it didn't get that much better framerates than my quadcore from what I remeber LOL!
I even recall someone running FSX on a highly overclocked 6GHZ Intel cpu and it still only gained like 10fps so it's seriously cpu bound!!!
So if WEI is the same we'll have to wait for 7GHZ Intel cpu to come out to get a 7.9 or something!

Seriously, this is about as worthless a benchmark as you can get. The WEI is only at best, a snapshot of your system, not to be taken as gospel of what your system is worth.

+100%.  I used to think more highly of it, but my 2 x 5870s only get 7.7.  I have come to realize someone somewhere decided certain things are measured and certain are not.  I expect the system is really only measuring one of the cards.  I have seen the number be 7.8 and 7.6 as well for the same two cards depending on the drivers.  I have also seen my score for ram drop because my overclock for my processor was not as high.  The WEI is far more important to people that do not have very much computer knowledge.  Just my opinion.

Windows Experience Index is probably the dumbest benchmark ever made.

What clocks are you running with these? With my 5970 @ 925/1200, up from a default of 725/1000 I get a 7.8.

Agree, this so called "index" is a waste of time.

If the person who came up with WEI had a half a brain it would be a 0.0 to 10.0 score system. When it first came out no one should have been able to et past a 4.9. This way it would have ment something as hardware improved. Now it is just a pile of doggie doo.

Yeah I don't put much stock in the WEI either.  All my scores sit at 7.8 except my stupid 300+ dollar HD that only scores 7.2?  I guess I need to buy 3 more and run them in RAID 0 so that I can boost my 7.2 up to 7.9 right? I think not :)  Maybe when they get the RAID and SSD's all figured out I will buy one more and RAID them but for now I like having TRIM and all the goodies work correctly without having to put much effort into it.

Seriously, this is about as worthless a benchmark as you can get. The WEI is only at best, a snapshot of your system, not to be taken as gospel of what your system is worth.

So true! Even with SAS RAID0 I still get a 5.9!

OMG SAS raid should definitely get close to 7.9 for the bandwidth it puts out but I remember Microsoft artificially limiting high disk scores to SSD so yeah WEI is worthless for those that really know how to benchmark!
