Hi guys, Looking through my motherboard's (an ASRock z77 Extreme 4) bios settings, I noticed an option to enable the windows 8 'very fast' booting. One of the requirements, though, was that my VBIOS needed to support UEFI GOP. Since I've got a reference 670, I assumed that whatever GOP stood for, it would most likely be a supported feature. When I booted, though, I got the message that my 670's VBIOS doesn't support UEFI GOP, and that I had to adjust my settings. Does anyone have any clue what UEFI GOP entails? Or, for that matter, why it doesn't seem to be supported on the latest generation of EVGA/Nvidia cards? Is this something that would be fixed with a new bios release after the public launch of Windows 8?

Most EVGA cards do not have UEFI BIOS at this moment. Unfortunately UEFI BIOS for VGA has some compatibility issues with some motherboards today.

Is this something that would be fixed/supported for this generation of cards still, do you think, or is it more likely something we'd be looking at next generation's cards for?

Because of the compatibility concerns there is some reluctance to support it across the board, but we may consider to make an update for users who request it.

The Asus boards have this too and falls over for the same reason. Though we only have Enable/Disable option for this - you can leave it enabled but then you have to go into CSM and allow Legacy for PCIe specifically.

I want a UEFI BIOS for VGA cards (680 Classified) as well, for use with Windows 8 and UEFI with my X79 Classified.

I'm confused about your question. Windows 8 has installed very well for me on my X79 SLI motherboard or at least a fresh install from with the BIOs set to UEFI DVD drive.

The problem is the fact when u set your CSM to disabled (which means everything runs in UEFI) then u get the message that the VGA is not supported for UEFI boot. So you have to enable CSM and set PCIe devices to legacy. It would be great if the GeForce 600 series support full UEFI booting. (My monitor always shows a boxed view when the resolution is too low, with UEFI GOP you boot with a much higher resolution (the whole screen is filled, etc...) I believe it reduces boot time as well)

I believe the Sandy and Ivy Bridge iGPU support UEFI...if you have one of those mobos (and aren't going 'surround'), you may be able to take advantage of that 'Lucid Virtu' (i-mode) hybrid thing. Monitor is plugged into the mobo, then, and should work as well as the onboard video does. And when you do crank up a game and need the performance, your video card just pipes its output through the onboard adapter, so...

I installed Win 8 yesterday, only to discover that UEFI is not supported on my 680 EVGA card. The error message goes like this "The VGA card is not supported by UEFI driver...". I hope there will be a driver update from EVGA soon. MOBO: ASUS P9X79 WS (supports pure UEFI) Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 680 FTW+ 4GB (No UEFI Support).

Please note, this is not a Microsoft/Windows 8 problem. UEFI is not a Microsoft standard (from Wikipedia: "The Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. UEFI is meant as a replacement for the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) firmware interface, present in all IBM PC-compatible personal computers") It is the EVGA products firmware that should have been updated ( A thread on Nvidia's site regarding UEFI says to go to your manufacturer for updated firmware). Windows 8 and my ASUS motherboard for instance fully supports UEFI. However, the EVGA 680 series card that I purchased in April does not. It should by this time.

What procedure do we follow to request this update for a Geforce 680 series VGA card, please?

There will be an update in the near future that you can apply if you want to use UEFI boot. It was not added as default since there are many motherboards that do not support UEFI VGA BIOS (especially legacy)

Unfortunately it is not possible because the BIOS ROM size is not large enough to support UEFI.

And Microsoft was very stupid not to work with Nvidia, if they haven't, to work out a Windows and Nvidia Update to fix this bad problem. Actually, a 600 series or any other that supports DX 11.1 makes the best use of Win8 since there were improvements made in the GUI specially for this according to this: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b...indows-8-graphics.aspx No one's really going to notice the UEFI stuff because all that happens before the OS boots. That's mainly for OEM's to make custom animations/screens during boot. I'd rather have reliability than experimental UEFI support myself. Only ones it would really benefit is people trying to stuff like more than 4 videcards in 1 machine. I remember a while back someone was crazy enough to stick 8 videocards on 1 board and they had to get a custom bios because the vga bios didn't have enough space to boot all the cards at once or something like that. Won't be a problem with UEFI.
