I've already got 2 SSD's in RAID 0 on the intel controller. I just purchased 2x 3TB Hitachi 7200rpm Deskstar drives that I would like to run in RAID 0 as well but I can't seem to get anywhere.

I've upgraded to the latest 82 BIOS and the latest 10.1 Intel RAID drivers but it won't recognize the drives. I've even tried the JMicron ports and with those I can create a 6TB array in the BIOS screen but windows won't recognize it.

It's a Windows 7 64bit OS

From what I understand it will work, but you have to change the drive to a GPT (GUI Partition Table) Disk.

I have no problem doing that as it's not the boot drive but how do you do that if windows doesn't recognize the drive / volume?

Have you looked in the disk management console to see if it is showing up there?, if it is a raw disk, it will not show up in windows explorer until it is initialized.

If you don't know where it is, go to:

Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage.

The drive "should" show up there if it is configured, but not initialized.

I think what you are referring to in Windows 7 is:

    Computer Management >> Disk Management

and it doesn't show up there, but it does show up in the BIOS setup screen for both the Intel and JMicron ports.

I don't have a "Computer Management" in my Win7 control panel, just the Admin tools which gets me there, but however you get there, doesn't really matter as long as you can find it.

I do know that the MBR partitions have a 2GB limit, and to get anything to work beyond that size, you have to use the GPT.
To back up one step, do you have the Windows drivers loaded for the JMicron controller?

In all honesty, if you put it on the Intel ports it should be fine (probably a better choice anyway), you just have to go to the disk management console to initialize it...did it show up in the Disk Management Console when you first tried it on the intel ports, or no?

There is another thread here dealing with the same drive size issue for reference.

We're talking about the same place I just right click on Computer and choose Manage.

When I hook them up to either the Intel or JMicron ports I can create a the 6TB RAID 0 array so the BIOS is recognizing the drives but it doesn't show up in Disk Management.

This is a fresh Windows install so I think I'm just going to reinstall it with the array already created and cross my fingers it works itself out.

If you do end up using the JMicron, make sure you install the drivers for them as Win7 won't recognize that controller without them.
I do think you'd be better off using the Intel controller if you can though.
Hope I didn't dumb it down too much for ya...Good luck.

There was a change in an earlier bios that allowed it, SZ2X ) , but it required a larger size BIOS, then when they wanted to add the raid rom to BIOS 81, it would not fit, with the larger size bios so they switched back to the 2TB limit, so it will not work in BIOS 81/82. give 77 a shot.
from there with the correct BIOS you will need to use the disk managment snap in tool, and allocate and assign before windows will see it. ( even with the older BIOSes, BOOT drives are still limited to 2TB)

Kmoore, So you are saying that even though the RAID controller is setting up his RAID ok, his problem isn't related to the 2TB limit of MBR partitioning, but the system BIOS?

I knew the BIOS had trouble managing multiple bootable cards  due to running out of space, but I did not know that it effected system in that way considering the controller had configured the drives in a RAID array with no issues...

    Re:2x 3TB drives in RAID 0 on x58 759 - possible? 2011/06/17 07:50:55 (permalink)
System had a 2TB limit because the BIOS was unable to address greater than 2 TB, that limit was removed with BIOS SZ2x, which removed the Hardware limitation, but windows still had the software limitation, addressing the MBR ( master BooT record ) which is why a data drive is OK, but a boot drive is NOT. removing the hardware limit in BIOS increased the size of the BIOS realastate , the bios became physically larger, but it solved the 2TB limit, however when they wanted to add the raid rom in BIOS 81, there was not enough room for all they wanted to add, so they reverted back to the pre SZ2X  BIOS, as a standard, which freed up space, but reinstated the 2TB limit. ( at least this is the way I understand it), Jacob F. may be a better person to ask.

Honesly, I didn't expect the BIOS to have an impact with drive size these days, you may be spot on, just making sure I understood you/looking for more info...thx

    Paragon GPT Loader

Converting from MBR to GPT Disks

    1. Right-click Computer in the Start Menu and then select Manage.
    2. Select Disk Management in the left column.
    3. Right-click the MBR drive you want to convert to GPT and then click Convert to GPT Disk.
Note: If the drive isn’t empty or it contains partitions you can’t convert it to GPT.

GPT and MBR disks are managed the same way.
Disks can be formatted as GPT or MBR by using the Diskpart.exe command prompt utility
or by using the Disk Administrator snap-in.
Volumes can be created on both GPT and MBR disks, and both kinds of disks can be mixed
in the same dynamic disk group.

I flashed back to BIOS 77 but the drives are only recognized as 746GB in BIOS. Windows recognizes these but changing to GPT still shows 746GB.

BIOS 82 seemed to be the closest as the drives show up as 2.7TB in BIOS and I can create the 6TB array in the Intel BIOS but the array is invisible to Windows.

Have you initialized the drives? A lot of time newer drives will not show up untill you have done this. You can check on the disk makers website or try to find the option hidden in the windows disk managment.

These are all with BIOS 82. I downloaded the Paragon utility that Hitachi says to use but it's nothing special, all it does is convert MBR -> GPT which I could do in Disk Management if Windows would see the drive.

Can you try the steps outlined here: http://msdn.microsoft.com...dows/hardware/gg463524

Specifically the last part  "Start the DiskPart utility and enter the command list disk. The disk list indicates GPT or MBR in the last column of the command output." and tell us if its actually set to GPT, the picture is blurry when enlarged but it doesnt appear to be running GPT.

Sorry about he blurry image but the disk simply isn't there. It doesn't show in Disk Management or Device Manager and no excamation marks indicating anything is wrong.

Have you checked to see if the array shows up in IRST?

In-case there is something not reacting well to the 6TB RAID drive disable the JMicron controllers in the BIOS and update Windows 7 to SP1 and see if there is any change.
