Nooby review of Thermalright's NEW Venomous-X (TRUE's successor):

Getting a new CPU soon and thought it was about time to move up in cooling. Decided to lap my TRUE as well to see if theres really that
much of a difference.

-First tests were done with an i7 965EE with a 3.8Ghz clock @ 1.35V (in BIOS). Vdroop OFF.

-Spreading method used was two lines (my fav vs. spreading) and used MX-2 paste:

-Fan's used were Cooler Master R4's model no: R4-L2R-20CR-GP's.

Please note, i'm in around a 70f ambients which fluctuate so tests won't be 100% accurate since I'm not in a controlled enviroment.

Unlapped TRUE

Based off Real Temp:
  -Idle Temps

1. 46
2. 47
3. 48
4. 45

-Load Temps w/ Linx 5 passes ALL mem used (as recorded by real-temp after run):

1. 86
2. 85
3. 83
4. 83

=====================================

Lapped TRUE

Based off Real Temp:
  -Idle Temps

1. 42
2. 45
3. 45
4. 43

-Load Temps w/ Linx 5 passes ALL mem used (as recorded by real-temp after run):

1. 82
2. 81
3. 79
4. 79

So you can see there was a slight difference, not much. Also my ambients may hav changed due to "floating heat" I think, but this is just  a rough test. To me, not really mind blowing.

=====================================

Next tests will be with the new Venomous-X CPU Cooler:
  -Idle Temps

1. 38
2. 39
3. 40
4. 37

-Load Temps w/ Linx 5 passes ALL mem used (as recorded by real-temp after run):

1. 76
2. 75
3. 74
4. 72

Pretty nice change in temps. The cooler comes with a "pressure" mount. During the tests I applied full force, which is 70lbs.

Overall, great cooler. Definitley an upgrade from the previous gen, but nothing epic like I had hoped based on the pressure mount. Not only that, but it looks great! Also, the fins seem to be thinner because I actually had the feeling I may accidently bend them, something I didn't experience on the TRUE. Now one thing I would have to warn you about, when handling the cooler, BE CAREFULL!. Those stylized "arrow" fins are sharp as crap and I knicked my thumb pretty nice, so a caution.

If I were to give it a Rating from 1 - 10 I would give this cooler a 9/10. A Black paint job and it would've gained a 10/10.

And here are some pictures of it in my case for you to enjoy.

have you tried increasing the pressure?  looks like its an equal to the mega, when I swapped from my original/version 1 lapped true to the mega I saw about a 3-4 degree temp improvement. counted the fins looks like true v1 has 52, venomous 47 and megahalem 45.

Thanks for the work and very nice results. How did you mount the Venomous-X (E/W or N/S). Can you mount it either way on the Classified? Is there any movement after it is installed? Alright last question  do you have any pix of it installed with 2 fans? Thanks again...

I was planning on waiting in the morning to take better pictures. It's almost identical in width, length and height to previous gen's so fitting N/S shouldn't be an issue really. haven't tried though.

As for the twist, after install yes, I was able to twist it, but required a bit of effort.

Multiple reasons can lead to that
    Different location
    Different temps from location
altitude...etc. I would though like to see 1 person with the Megahalem, D-14 and Venomous-X review all 3...would be a very nice challange

@Blackhawk, I did kind of a cheesy comparison between the IFX & D-14 (Post# 13) and there are 2 links at the bottom of that post that are a little better, the Noctua NH-12P to the Megahalem and IFX to the Megahalem.

In order to accurately compare the Vx with the new Nocutua, Promliatech, lapped TRUE, etc., they would need to be tested at the same ambient temps, identical voltage settings, same fan(s), same fan speeds, preferrably on the same system. Of course each sink would need to be installed several times in order to account for differences in tim application to really get an accurate picture. Anyone up for that?  I think it is, at first glimpse, fairly impressive that the Vx shows that much improvement over the lapped TRUE on your particular system. I know that after owning an IFX 14, Promliatech, and a lapped TRUE,  the TRUE was so close in temps to the other two that I sold them and kept the TRUE. Hopefully, we will see some full fledged comparisons in the next few days of the newest coolers, but I have had the Vx in my Performanc PCs shopping cart twice already lol. Thanks for this posting. Nice work!

RiChess, awesome pics on your Flickr page! Wish they were 1900x1200! The view of the horizon from your kitchen window is one I have always dreamed of, and sadly, probably always will. Man I envy that wide open view. Don't like being boxed in by trees and such, just as long as there are some trees nearby...
Back on topic, nascasho, when I mentioned testing parameters I was not refering to you specifically, just saying that if any of us other members, myself included, conduct similar tests it would be helpful if the rest of us included our own testing conditions, fans/speeds, voltages, etc. Thanks again for the quick legwork, very helpful!

Thanks! It's just too bad I didn't see Flickr as a backup for my photos back when I was still into photography, and was trying to minimize time spent uploading on my slow connection. And *of course* I had lose the photos.

anyone have any idea how this fits in a EVGA x58 SLI?  I'm hoping to use a push and pull in an east/west orientation without blocking any of the dimm slots?

It cools very well, never felt any need or desire to lap it.
