All EVGA dual-socket 270-GT-W555 system builders, are invited to get specific on their build options...

I still am on track to build one of these monsters. I am between jobs, and I had on old pension plan with 18 grand in it. Due to me and the wife having other retirement options already in place, she has given me the green light to dump that old plan, let uncle sam take his 40%, and me play with .... Gasp (10 Grand). She says she only wants me to buy her a new (small) TV, and then have her blessing to build whatever beast of a PC I want with the rest. I am not just blowing hot air, and believe I will be building an entire system based on this mobo in actual reality!

For others like me, who think they will also be building one of these systems, I think we should start to collect out thoughts about the options we intend to go with.

CPU Options:
Talonman
Cheapest Nehalem Xeon that has hyper-threading:
Intel Xeon E5520 Nehalem 2.26GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 80W

Quad-Core Server Processor - Retail
 http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16819117185

$384.99 x (2) = $769.98

Memory Options:
EVGA_JacobF
You do not need server or ECC ram.

Actually it is a bit more than just a server with 4 PCIe x16.

Don't forget:
  • Overclocking/EVBot Support
  • SLI support
  • USB 3.0 Support
  • SATA 6 Support
Not to mention all the other enthusiast features that you find on Classified boards.

AuDioFreaK39

Max RAM supported on this board is 48GB of DDR3 (all lanes work as one in triple-channel mode).

Case Options:
markistheone

Per Mountain Mods.

"Hi Mark,

Yes we will be manufacturing a tray for this and other SSI MEB motherboards.
I’m surprised that wasn’t mentioned by the author of the article.

At any rate the answer is yes we have collaborated with EATX and will be getting trays made prior to the board release.  It will fit all 10PCI back panels and thus 6 cases.

Ascension
Extended Ascension
U2-UFO
Extended U2-UFO
Pinnacle 18
Pinnacle 24

Thanks for asking,
Feel free to spread the word J"

If you are building one of these, I would love to hear your thoughts on the parts you select to go with it, and why...

I am starting to look at the various MM Cases listed above, to see what the pick of the litter would be.

Sheer processing power I guess.  Folding?

I really don't see the point either.  I'm skipping it.

I really need to stop reading these posts.  It is getting rediculous; I am fed up with them.

Not to rant, since I am posting in this thread by my own choice, but can we talk about something else sometime?

The point to me is having a system that will keep me happy for a few years to come, and should have enough CPU to keep Fermi happy too.

The other threads currently going, aren't focusing on the actual build enough for my liking, and the reason I am running this one.
I intend to keep it on track as best I can.
Back to specific part selection.

I am looking for builders input mainly.

The debate why I/We want to build one has no place in this thread.
There are plenty of threads already going for that...

Question: Any chance if we get a few people looking at the same case, maybe we can organize a group buy from MM, and receive a discount?
(Just a thought.)

Make sure if you go for air cooling, like two PM's, that they don't interfere with whatever is cooling your DDR3 sets.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

It seems to me the only viable option for pure air cooling is a case with two top exhausting fans. Such a case would work perfectly with double Corsair H50 or CoolIT Domino setups. Actually for pure WC too. So I really think, a case with top exhausting fans is the way to go...

Here is the MM page:
http://www.mountainmods.c..omputer-cases-c-21.html

Start looking them over.

Which MountainMod cases, have a spot for 1 or 2 triple rads, out of these selections: Ascension, Extended Ascension, U2-UFO, Extended U2-UFO, Pinnacle 18, and the Pinnacle 24?

You don't have to explain yourself to people who don't get it, it is choice; just like I still try to inform those who still don't get it.  I'd prefer less ignorance surrounding the idea that this is something for the rich, or that due to how many use the parts, that it somehow isn't good for much else.

Quite frankly, 2-way Xeons are part of Intel's bread and butter, you'll see more options to come (super-future-proofed yourself) than any others meant for X58 -- Intel has us X58 users by the balls, we aren't going to go for an AMD in retaliation of not enough options since they don't perform as well, so no real need to offer more options, yet.

A long time ago I was interested in a dual-socket system as a potential upgrade (nVidia's CUDA changed that thinking), but my approach was different; I had this thing about being truly 'different'.  One primary requirement due to motherboard choice was making my own chassis, would you do that instead of searching/waiting to buy one already built?

Thanks again buddy.
lehpron  One primary requirement due to motherboard choice was making my own chassis, would you do that instead of searching/waiting to buy one already built?

I don't believe I could without making it look like a total hack job...
If I could, and thought it would save me some big cash and look good, I would consider it.

I still kick the idea around of a work station setup instead of a case, but as of yet am undecided.

I also am looking for memory modules, that would be a good match for this board.
We want triple channel kits...

Any favorites?

I think it's a bit too early to start parts shopping but I appreciate your enthusiasm! I'm going to wait at least until I see what EK has planned for waterblocks. As a hobbyist multi-threaded developer, this board is definitely on my radar but I'm still paying off my Classified 3X SLI system!

I can't see air cooling this beast enough in a case, even with top mounted fans...IMHO air cooling would work with a workbench setup.  WC is the only way that I would go with this build.

As you know I just finished off building my 4 way SLI Classy project recently, I went with the mountian Mods Extendended Assecision case, and let me tell you that case is made for a board like this one! Sure all the other cases from MM will fit the boardn as well, but the "E.A." will fit it and and not bat an eye on space usageand not to minchin it will give you room to run Multiple water cooling loops if thats your end goal. That case just give you a lot of "room" and options for a project centered around such a massive and god like board

Just my $0.02

And have fun building it man

Agreed, we need to start thinking of how to get the peaces done right for this build now. When I built my classified it took me about 3 months to get all the parts in house and all the ducks in a row correctly. I think I want one of this one motherboards because of pure awesomeness, and the fact that it can do 48 GB of fast DDR3. I would love that for my MMO hobby and running my WMware database and other heavy load work jobs running all at the same time.

One thing I love about my classified thou is that all cooling to cool my build fits in a relatively full packed single full relatively sexy design, full tower case. However, with the added heat of first generation triple set of fermi cards I believe this thing is going to bejust to hot. This dual CPU on OC heat generation alone pluss add in a OC fermi cards on water and it will be too hot for a few single, triple rads for sure. A QP or triple sandwich rad from Switftech alone will also not do. I happen to know this due to the fact that my rads on my own build as you can see in my sig, a sandwich triple rad and a dual rad is able to handle this heat as It is, at 4.5 Ghz, but, with one more CPU as this motherboard represents and the most certainly what are going to be first run out at least, hot new fermi cards. I can say for sure, what I got of cooling rads will not be enough to cool a setup of dual CPU at 4,2 Ghz for 100% stability and triple fermi cards, that should release round the time this motherboard becomes available.

There are a wonderful case theory build out there, that most certainly will do and be able to deal with all this heat we are talking about for this setup. My view is that this idea is both stylish, as it is not, a dual size wide fat box on the floor, and can for certain retain all the needed water cooling parts inside the case itself: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=217611&page=19

As you can see from here there should be enough space for sandwiched radiators from swiftech of this type:

Maybe we should get together and sponsor this guy to do a manufacturing run on his case dream, so he can get it manufactured, unless we all wanta  brick to get what at least I need done..... I am not seeing anyone else doing it unless you want a HUGE almost monstrous quadratic box on the floor.  I am not looking for that option even tho the case itself is not ugly as such.

My current e759 classified build fits one of the above radiator setup, in front , and a non QP twin fan, single rad in top of the case, and that in total copes with the heat output of 4.5 and triple hydro copper GTZ 285 at 730 Mhz with relatively ease.
Now to my point: I have been experimenting a bit taking this OC on the GPU setup further on the graphics cards but heat starts to build up slowly in the water loop, so I can say for certain that it wont be able to cope with a dual CPU setup on OC, if I use the same setup of rads once over for this build.

We need more water cooling.. with no doubt in my view, a Quad fan radiator sandwitch setup  plus a triple fan radiator, and all in sandwich or as swiftech calls it the QP, should in my view be able to cope with the extra heat generation this motherboard with its extra CPU on OC and the expected heat of triple fermi cards on OC.

A huge "brick" or quadratic or equal box, is not what I am looking for. I been looking at the current Lian Li cases and none of them holds more than max 1 triple rad in front or you have to dump one power supply and modify the top part of the build. This wont do for this build and heat output at all, at least not at the dual CPU 4.5 Ghz range and triple fermi or more... Lian Li do make some wonderful sleek computer cases in hi quality that are "the sex" Example:

To sum it up; In my experience on OC, I believe we have a fundamental heat problem here, no other case than custom made cases, other than a HUGE case brick will do, and somehow we need to solve it unless we are all going to go for the gigantic brick case if we want this motherboard on a silent stable OC setup with some graphic cards in the loop at some good speeds. i'm still debating getting this board, i think if i do i'm gonna pair it with 2 of the E5520's get 2 6 kits of probably mushkin 1600mhz ram.  i own a MM case already but to fit this i need the extension kit as well as a new backpanel and mobo try, almost easier to buy a new case LOL.  i already have the watercooling stuff needed to support the 2 CPU's, if someone puts out a mobo WB i'll probably add that as well, which means i would probably need another rad to help, if thats the case i need a new front panel which at that point does mean new case. as far as GPU's i have 2 295's now, been thinking if ditching them for fermi's cause i hate quad SLI with a passion.  Parts from exisiting build going in will be my areca raid card, gonna pickup a new intel PCIe NIC, x-fi

If you have about 10G to dump into a computer you should just water cool every thing.
This being the RAM, Mobo, Video Cards, and PSU.  Maybe a dual phase changer for the CPUs.
As for a case maybe something from http://www.mountainmods.com/ or a extension on your house.

Coming from a rather lengthy dual CPU background and typically always having multi-processor rigs that I work with I'll probably join you in the adventure of building one of these Talon

Case wise I am waiting to hear back from ABS if the Canyon 695 has enough room to fit this board.  I like the MM case layout but I dislike the footprint and the style.. it reminds me of the old APEXX machines we had that were giant freaking cubes that were always horribly awkward to place in a studio environment.  The ABS Canyon isn't much better given how ridiculously tall it is but it's narrow which means I can squeeze it amongst the other slew of machines under the desk and still have room to wheel around.  I've also got my fingers crossed that another manufacturer comes out with something aesthetically pleasing and functional by the time the board launches :)

CPU wise if you're on a budget the E5520's are a good route to go but in my eyes if you're going to wait for this board then you may as well go all in and grab a pair of Gulftown Xeon's.  If the 980X proves to have dual-QPI then it's even better for us given the price/performance ratio it's supposed to provide (~$1000 for 3.3ghz).

Memory wise it's odd for me to not have or be using ECC memory which while bloody expensive provides a plethora of great error checking features and great system debug information to tell if you have a faulty stick or something that is going bad.  I've already got 12gb of G.Skill DDR3-1600 on the shelf from an old build that I may use again or go to a 24gb kit of DDR3-1333 from Corsair.  Memory speeds mean next to nothing to me in the real world applications that I deal with so unless you're doing synthetic benchmarks it's unlikely you'll need to go all out with anything beyond 1600+mhz memory for a build like this.

GPU's I'm waiting to see what happens with Fermi and ATI.. right now I've got two FirePro v7750's in my rig for 3D work but I'm hoping that if Nvidia can nail the drivers for Fermi and provide more performance for what I do (I need to push anywhere from 1000 polygons to well over 2-3 million and I'm jumping back and forth between Direct3D and OpenGL across many apps so it's tough finding a neutral spot for a card).  I'm hoping Fermi offers a 2048mb or larger like the GTX285 did because the 2gb GTX285 is still one of the best consumer cards I've used to date for 3D work.

I think a dual phase changer is out for me personally, due to it wanting 220V's. I am already concerned about running this beast off of 1 normal household outlet. I already think I will probably need 2 PSU's, insuring to put each on different electrical circuits.

The Dual Phase-Changer may indeed be a sweet option for others...

If the custom case shown above was an option for me, I would also consider it as she is a stunning beauty IMO.

So far, the MM Extended Ascension, is my front runner, due to both it's availability and it's ability to hold multiple rads.

So exactly what size RAD's can it hold at Max? I would want to put as much Rad in that case as I could. A quad rad would be outstanding, along with a triple by it's side...

I agree that 1 single quad RAD wont do it for me...

Maybe we should get together and sponsor this guy to do a manufacturing run on his case dream, so he can get it manufactured, unless we all wanta  brick to get what at least I need done.....

Just my 2 cents

Maybe we should inquire if a group run is an option, as it is a looker for sure, and it's apparent that lots of thought has already been put into it's design.

Do keep us posted on what you hear back on the Canyon 695. How much RAD can you fit in that case?

Thanks for the advice on the CPU too... (2) 6 core with HT would be my dream, but price on them will be the deciding factor...
CPU prices will only come down, so if I need to start with (2) quad core processors, I think I would be able to deal with it. We could always upgrade our CPU's at a later time.

GPU's, I have my heart set on Fermi. CUDA is just too strong of a pull for me to resist.
Thanks for your input, I look forward to more!

Its that one you are saying, can  you plz link the case you are thinking of?

IF it is the one above, I would do 4 quads in sandwich or as swiftech calls it, QP, I dont know of anything else that removes more heat and keeps things silent than this, why you say, well, mostly just because you can, and well, if you want to OC and have 4 dual fermi cards.. you will probably need it....

And yes, you need two power supplies, one for mobo and one for GPUs if not you will pull more than 1500 out of the socket if you are Europe and either risk overheating your power line or blow up your power switch. There is no other way round this known to me at least.

I believe if you are USA your max is 1300 W and that is err, juts about almost enough for dual CPU OC alone.. depending on mostly how much heat you can remove fast enough from these CPUs.

I did manage to run my CPU and down clock the GPUS at 4.8 GHz just for fun for a bit of testing for fun. It does not work thou on normal use, burn runs overheat the CPU as heat wont get removed fast enough (my ambient temperatur in summer time is hi) so, to sum it up, I can say that you need all the radiators you can fit on that case to do what you want depending on how hi a OC and how much heat the fermi cards will output. I am thinking each fermi GPU will do about 300-330 W range. On this I am not certain thou. We will have to wait until EVGA finds us some golden ones and does a hydrocopper of that GPU for my build.

Cosmos II water cooled, EVGA SR-X, Intel E5-2687W x2, EVGA  Titan Black Hydrocopper signature x3, 1 x Dell 30" 308WFP,  96Gb 1600Mhz ram, Creative XB-X-FI,  256GB OCZ SSD, Storage controller: Areca 1222 in Raid 0 with 3 x, 2 TB Seagate HD, EVGA 1500W PSU
