How do I clear the CMOS on my motherboard?

Answer / Solution

There are two methods to clear the CMOS on your motherboard.


The first method of clearing the CMOS on your motherboard is to use the Reset CMOS jumper.  Please reference the manual of your motherboard to locate the Reset CMOS jumper on your motherboard.

Use the following procedure to clear CMOS using the reset CMOS jumper:

1.  Turn off the AC power supply and connect pins 1 and 2 together using the jumper cap.

2.  Return the jumper setting to normal (pins 2 and 3 together with the jumper cap).

             3.  Turn the AC power supply back on.



The second method of clearing the CMOS is to remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard for a period of 15-20 minutes.  Please reference the manual of your motherboard to locate the CMOS battery.

Use the following procedure to clear CMOS by removing the CMOS battery:

1.  Turn off the AC power supply and physically remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard.

2.  Let the motherboard sit for a period of 15-20 minutes with the CMOS battery removed.

             3.  Put the CMOS battery back in the motherboard and turn the AC power supply back on.
