This is best done on a fresh install before you install any software.
Keep in mind durring vista installation that the account you set up you are going to disable/delete.

If you are keeping up with my posts, I am going to post some brief how to's on specific things then I'm going to make a guide for installing/setting up Vista SP1 Start to finish. (I've done it enough times i have the registry memorized...) So every one can get a taste of a lighter weight Vista. ELIMINATING ALL SUGARS, MANUALLY!!!

DO NOT SKIP AHEAD, you can mess things up.

On the first boot log in and in the start menu search field (which intrestingly enough serves as a run command as well) type Control userpasswords2

Chose the advanced tab at the top of the screen and then chose the advanced button on the middle right.

It will open up a window called "Local Users and Groups"

On the left chose users. You will now see on the right an account called Administrator and it is Disabled.

This is the REAL admin account.

Right click on it and chose properties. Then where it says "this account is disable", uncheck/enable it.

Now the accout is enabled.

Rename the account to what ever you like. If you are going to rename it do this before you log into it the first time, that way it creates the folder structure with the correct name and all programs are happy.

Here's where I hope you don't stop reading and skip ahead.

You CANNOT set the password in this utility by right clicking and changing the password. This will lock the documents folder forever. Yes, even though there is no password, windows is silly.

You must log into the account and set the password through the regular user control panel.

After that, you can customize the desktop/start bar how you like and use this account from then on out or have two, if you are afraid of messing things up with full admin powers.

If you don't plan on keeping/using the other account you can go back into Control Userpasswords2 and rename, disable or delete the account you created durring Windows installation setup.

I hope this helps!

Subtle differences in permissions. Ability to modify certain parts of the registry is the primary advantage.

If you don't play in the registry much or havent run into any issues installing drivers then you don't need it. Even so, I feel I should have unrestricted access to my own computer.

Robot, when I hit the Control userpasswords2 and click advanced tab and advanced the lusrmgr - [Local Users and Groups (Local)] appears and on the left is has Local Users and Groups (Local) nothing underneath and I cannot click on anything. In the middle it says with an 'X' in a red circle says,
'Local Users and Groups'
This computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium.
This snapin may not be used with this version of Windows. To
Manage user accounts for this computer, use the User
Accounts tool in the Control Panel.
Now a few questions.  Do I need to download SP1 in order to do this or am I just unable to do this?  My disc of Vista does not have SP1.  I am following or attempting to follow your guide here http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.asp?m=471394&mpage=1&key=񳅢 and really does not specify to download SP1 before any of the optimization tweaks are preformed.  I turned off the UAC however have not done the REGEDIT portion and have not downloaded anything yet as far as drivers go.  Thank you for your threads and help if you get a chance.

This is actually highly useful for Vista.Lots of folders\files that are deemed important by Microsoft will need Super Admin Rights to modify or delete.

For this same reason the takeown command comes in handy as well.

For instance if I did not have a Super Admin Account in Vista and wanted to delete an annoying protected file such as WPABALN or CTFMON that resides in the System32 folder you would do this command:

Takeown /f "c:\windows\system32\Ctfmon.exe"

This will give the current logged on user ownership of the file. Then use the CACLS command:

Cacls "c:\windows\system32\Ctfmon.exe" /g everyone:f

This will give you and everyone else permissions to the file. You can now modify or delete the file.

Note:Ownership and Permissions are NOT the same thing and in lots of cases when editing\deleting a Microsoft protected file in Windows Vista you will need both of these.

It should be noted that this propagates the super user admin rights to all administrators once unticked. If you run a local lan or have several users on your PC this needs to be considered.

There is another way to access this account and it's fairly simple in comparison. I would hate to take credit for anything copied off the internet. So here is a link that outlines how to do it using the dos command prompt.

Maybe some of you didn't know about this method.

I found and easier way than all that really. I simply install Vista HP64, then before installing SP1, I install a program called XDNTweaker. Run it. Disable UAC. Then I enable for right click "TakeOwner". Reboot, then install SP1 and what ever else with out any problems.

The way it works for many Vista systems is that you can't even use Vista unless SP1 is already installed. There are many reasons why this is true... the hot fixes and compatibility fixes not to mention the 4GB ram issue. I can't even boot up unless SP1 is installed first lol.
And it doesn't get much easier than bringing up the dos prompt and typing in a few letters.

My vLite disk already has UAC disabled and SP1 is already installed and..oh yes my registration numbers are already typed in. So that way ain't gunna work for me.

Does it work only with x86 or does it also work with x64?

I think that it should work with both, but I have x64 Ultimate right now, and I want  to know, because I need to do a fresh boot on one hard drive.

Works fine on Business x64.  If you're not doing this on a fresh install, you'll have to transfer over all of your docs/music/pics/settings, etc.  A minor PITA,  but nothing serious.

Yeah, I found this helpful. Not even just r0b0t's original post, but some of the other posts in this thread have also been informative. Definitely worth a sticky.

Hey guys, new to the forum and Vista. I just made the switch from XP Pro 64 to Vista Ult. 64 and after loading windows I noticed that a full Gig of my memory is being used by the OS. Is that normal for Vista? I mean I knew that vista would use more memory but I didnt think it would be that much! I have 4 gigs total but I was wondering if enabiling this super admin would let me make Vista run more efficiently and if not can you guys point me in the right direction?

There is a much easier way to gain access to the Administrator account.

Very simply open a command prompt, which I am sure all of you can do pretty easily.

At the command prompt type the folling statement without the quotation marks:

"net user administrator /active:yes" and hit enter

this puts the administrator account as an added icon on the login page, but remember this puts it up WITHOUT a password!!!

Use at your own risk....

Hey,

Yeah, sadly, that is normal.  You can try using R0b0t's suggestion, and tweak around in the settings.  Also, if you really want to get that RAM usage down, turn of Aero, but, then, whats the point of Vista?

Umm you just reposted exactly what I did, except I gave the actual site with the information. The instructions from my site went something like this.

5. To Enable the Hidden Built-In Administrator Account -

A) In the command prompt, type: net user administrator /active:yes and press Enter. (See screenshot below)
B) Go to step 7.

So saying that your way is easier seems a bit redundant to me.

Good point, but at least he meant well.  Some people only read the OP, and reply to that. (Like me in some cases.)

huh, but while RE-reading the thread I do not see that post anywhere....let me look again....oh unless of course you mean the link....well...for some...you get inundated with links and a simple type the response and be done with it....so, maybe you typed it elsewhere, I typed it here....

Not trying to be sarcastic or mean... :)

i never understood teh 4 gig issue (maybe because i never had it).  i recently had to reinstall my o/s (vista ultimate x64) and i installed it with 4 gigs of ram in my system, i then did all of teh updates to sp1

Good thing is that recently Microsoft decided to have everyone install SP1 first to avoid all the crashing problems that people were getting. When I first got my system with 4GB ram Vista64 and the the updates would install no problem and without having to get SP1.

But that all changed a few months back when I started to get the crashing problem unless I installed SP1 first. I can imagine that millions of computers crashed after a clean install from that problem alone. It only took Microsoft a year or so to figure that one out.
