Some people are unsure on how to overclock the GPU. Quite frankly, the GPU is the easiest thing to overclock in a system. Lets start from the beginning.

The first thing I recommend is to grab some useful programs and the latest NVIDIA WHQL drivers. The programs I recommend are EVGA Precision 1.7.1 (for the overclocking/monitoring), GPU-Z 0.3.4 (monitoring/GPU info), and a stress testing program for artifact testing. OCCT has two tests - one for VRAM as well. For this guide I'll be using ATItool 0.26.

ForceWare 190.62 WHQL Driver
Proper uninstallation/installation of video drivers (Vista, in XP it should be somewhat similar):
  • Download and install Driver Sweeper or something similar.
  • Download desired driver.
  • Right click on computer, properties, click Device Manager (on left)
  • Select your display device (video card), uninstall video device software.
  • Delete driver folder (located in C:\NVIDIA)
  • Reboot in safe mode (repeatedly hit F8 during boot sequence).
  • Run Driver Sweeper or your equivalent. Only clean Display and PhysX driver.
  • Reboot.
  • Install your desired driver.
  • Reboot.

When installing new drivers, make sure all anti-virus software is disabled.

EVGA Precision 1.8.0 Download

GPU-Z 0.3.4 Download

ATItool 0.26 Download

OCCT Download

Furmark 1.6.5 Download

Driver Sweeper 2.0.5 Download

For those of you who don't know, artifacts occur when your GPU is overclocked too high and/or your temperatures are too high (but not high enough for a shut down). If you get artifacting right out of the box with good temperatures and you did the proper method of installing new (and different) NVIDIA WHQL drivers, I suggest you RMA your GPU. Make sure your temperatures stay below 105 degrees Celsius, that is the max most cards can handle. It is best to stay below 90 degrees Celsius, artifacts can occur before 105.

For this guide I'll be using my primary video card for example, an EVGA GTX 260 CORE 216 (55nm). This is the vanilla (default) version which came at the factory clocks.

Factory Settings:
  • Core Clock: 576 mhz
  • Shader Clock:1242 mhz
  • Memory Clock: 999 mhz (1998 mhz effective data rate)
  • Fan Speed: Auto (40%)

Uh oh, we ran into another confusing term here.

Effective data rate? What does that mean? My card was supposed to come with 1998 mhz memory but it is shown as 999 mhz!

High end video cards use double data rate memory, usually GDDR3 or on several ATI cards they use GDDR5 as well. Multiply the memory clock EVGA Precision/GPU-Z shows to get the effective data rate, which is usually what is advertised.

999 mhz x 2 = 1998 mhz

GDDR5 memory on the other hand is really QDR or Quad Data Rate. Rather than multiplying by 2 you multiply by 4.

Now onto the overclocking. I open up EVGA Precision 1.6.1 (1.7.1 was not released when I made this guide), GPU-Z 0.3.3 (0.3.4 was not out yet), and ATItool 0.26. My core clock is 576 mhz, shader clock is 1242 mhz, memory clock is 999 mhz just as it should be. Core/shaders are linked and fan speed is auto, or 40%. Notice with EVGA Precision 1.6.1 you can select other video cards to overclock separately. The monitoring graph can be removed from the box and expanded to show additional information. Very useful. Do not enable Apply at startup until you've ensured stability!

By boredgunner at 2009-04-13

Lets get started. Unlink the core/shaders, and set fan speed to manual and raise it a little. You can push the sliders up, or enter a number and it will give you your desired clock speeds. Overclock in small increments, no more than 27 mhz at a time for the shader clock. The core clock should run at a maximum of 1/2 the shader clock. Memory clock should be raised in small increments too, no more than 25 mhz. After the first small overclock, select the scan for artifacts feature on ATItool. So first I unlinked core/shaders and set fan speed to 60% (it went to 61% on it's own).

I increased the core clock speed from 576 mhz to 600 mhz, shaders from 1242 mhz to 1280 mhz, and memory clock from 999 mhz to 1025 mhz. Yeah a little more than 25 mhz increments but I've overclocked this card before, I know what it is capable of.

By boredgunner at 2009-04-13
Run ATItool for a little while (several minutes) and see if you run into any artifacts. I didn't, so lets move on.

Lets bump it up to GTX 260 SC speeds, 626/1350/1053 (core/shaders/memory). I'm making pretty large heaps because I've overclocked this card before.

By boredgunner at 2009-04-13
Run ATItool. Still success, lets move on.

Bumped up to FTW speeds. No errors yet.

By boredgunner at 2009-04-13
Run ATItool. I ramped the fan speed up to 80% to keep the temperatures down. It got quite noisy, but I don't really care. Still success, lets move on.

Lets push a little bit further, 684/1476/1190.

By boredgunner at 2009-04-13

Does overclocking void my warranty?
Not if you have an EVGA card. I can't speak for anyone else, sorry.

I ran into an error. What do I do?
Lower the speeds a little bit. If you get the nvlddmkm stopped responding and has recovered error, try lowering the memory clock first. If it still persists, lower the core. If it still persists, lower the shader clock too. Lower them to the last successful clock you had them at, and move forward again a little bit more. Sometimes you can get a BSOD from the same error. These blue screens are pretty detailed and usually say nvlddmkm stopped responding and has failed to recover or something along the lines of that. Follow the same procedure.

I can't overclock as high as others who have the same card. Why is this?
Not all cards are the same, some overclock further than others. Water cooling your GPU can help you reach higher speeds.

How much does GPU overclocking affect performance?
In games, the difference isn't that noticeable unless you reach a very high overclock. In GPU heavy benchmarks such as 3DMark Vantage you'll get a nice increase in your GPU score and even your overall score if you've achieved a decent overclock.

EVGA offers SC, SSC, and FTW models. What is the difference?
These are factory overclocked, guaranteed to work above the default speeds. In my opinion the SC/SSC models aren't worth it when there is a FTW model for that card, from what I've read these are the parts that fail to reach the FTW spec but I'm not too sure on this. The FTW cards are priced very high but they also have very nice overclocks on them. Same goes for the SSC on cards that have no FTW model. I passed the FTW speed on my GTX 260, but failed to reach the EVGA SSC speed on my PNY 9600GT (9600GT SSC comes at 740/1836/975).

I've ran into my max overclock. When you do, you can upload a validation file on GPU-Z for bragging rights

Here is the validation for my GTX 260. 19% increase across the board. Not bad.

http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/cun93/

One for my PhysX Processing Unit too, 9600GT. 11% increase on the core/shaders, 6% on the memory. Disappointed, but oh well.

http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/2qfha/

My new PhysX processing unit remains at stock speeds, since I can't exactly stress test it unless I make it my primary card.

http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/8mun3/

Final Settings:
  • Core Clock: 684 mhz
  • Shader Clock: 1476 mhz
  • Memory Clock: 1188 mhz (2376 mhz effective data rate)
  • Fan Speed: 80%

Boredgunner, ATItool 0.26 doesn't run under Vista x64.

Also for how long do you suggest running ATItool before pushing clocks higher? there are also much stronger GPU stress testers like Furmark or OCCT GPU test.

Another thing, I think this guide has some inconsistencies IMHO related to shader clock straps. i don't know how that really really runs but i've seen in GPU-Z whatever you set even in if you set shader to 1280 or 1476.

while someone told me that shader straps run at fixed increments (of 27MHz or 54MHz) and that suggests other real values (increment of 27MHz starting from e.g. 1242 base): 1269, 1296, 1323, 1350, 1377, 1404, 1431, 1458, and so on...
also uneven shader clocks are generally avoided, because max core clock is always 1/2 of shader and with uneven shader clock it makes it it run lower than real max value.

e.g. for 1458 real shader value, max core clock is 729.

here you go, this table shows real clocks and best optimal values for GT200 series, someone wise created this and they say it works good (it does for me and others):

Thanks for that chart, that will help lots of people. I use Vista x64, it is my only operating system and ATItool 0.26 works just fine.

About the core/shader clocks, where the shader clock should be at least 2x the speed of the core clock, I did mention that. But you did supply some information I never knew.

no probs man, i saw you put lots of work into your guide
just wanted to share some knowledge i found when looking for similar info

atitool 0.26 didn't want to run on my x64 vista at all even when I disabled digital driver signatures (F8 boot option)... however version 0.27 beta worked fine for me. anyways i barely use it now, as now OCCT offers much stronger GPU tester.

take care Boredgunner!

everytime i try to run ATI Tool i get this popupbox

"the kernel mode driver does not seem to be running. A device driver is required for communication with your video hardware. If you jus upgraded from an older version it may help to uninstall ATITool, reboot, then install the new eversion."

any help?

On last thing you have to do it to boot Vista through F8 and select "DISABLE DRIVER SIGNATURE ENFORCEMENT", otherwise it won't work.

I don't use ATItool anymore as well, as it is a pain in the a$$. I stick to OCCT GPU test and am happy camper

Hey boredgunner, you mentioned that the shader clock can be 2x more than the core clock. Well something funny is going on with my cards. I have 2 GTX 280 SSC in SLI and so far I have been able to push the core clock past 700 but I cant push the shader clock past 1430. When I set the shader clock to 1435, I keep seeing all these yellow bars in the ATItool and the program beeps every second. The yellow bars are artifacts right? When I set the shader clock to 1431, I dont see any more yellow bars but the program still beeps every second. Everything runs fine at 1430. Any idea whats going on? Have I reached my max at 1430 or is there a way to push the shader clock past it? Thanks!

IMO you reached the max shader for your card, which means it can go with max Core at 715 (if stable). you would need to test it for hours in ATItool to really tell if this is stable 100%, or just run OCCT GPU test (disabled SLI) on primary card and see if it lasts the test (good luck!).

It's the core that is limited by 1/2*shader value and NOT the other way around.

Also 1430 shader is below closest strap (1431) and probably it actually runs at 1404, so not sure what your max core value can be now (715 or 702).

Ok thanks! I will continue to do more testing. Also, how much artifacting is acceptable when looking for max performance in a game? So for example. I recently tested where in the last few seconds of the test, a few pixels turned yellow and started to beep. Would this OC be acceptable for smooth gameplay or should I decrease it until there is absolutly no artifacting or beeping?

How accurate is ATI tool for testing the GTX 295? Does it only use 1 GPU/memory set or is it using both? If its just the first one, then the second chip/memory set may become unstable and you wont notice.

When I went to install the ATI tool, Windows wouldn't allow the driver to be installed. It said that it was an unsigned driver and this version of Windows will not allow unsigned drivers to be installed. My current OS is Windows Vista Ultimate x64. Any suggestions?

I have the latest Precision utility installed and the 182 driver for my graphics cards.

Using Precision to monitor GPU speeds/temps, ATITOOL is not capable with SLI setups.

It will only stress the primary card, but not both. Furmark however will stress both cards and is a much more comprehensive test for stability.

FurMark only stresses the primary video card in SLI and multi-GPU systems.  If you know some way to make FurMark stress multiple video cards or select which video card it will stress, please let me know.

Nice guide.

Two things I would like to point out:

Please consider linking to ATItool v0.27 BETA 3 instead of v0.26 since 0.27 has much better compatibility with Vista.

Please consider linking to GPUtool since it is ATItool's successor program and will be the program to use in the future.  GPUtool isn't completely finished yet, but its pre-release version is functional and much better than ATItool in my opinion.

When OCed the shaders to 1500+, when the GPU reaches 62°C, it starts artifacting.

Why at that temperature?

Hey im super noob at this and i have a question (maybe more than 1). When i do this whole process of overclocking, should i make sure SLI is off and do the entire process for each of my two cards seperately, or should i have it on and sync the two cards since that is how i will be playing my games? And also, when i was trying this on my first GPU alone, even though i saw some yellow dots on ATItool after increasing all 3 sliders a bit, after 5 minutes i never got any kind of error. Should i let it run longer just to see if it gets worse? Or should i be letting it run for more than 5 minutes regularlly, not just when i see some yellow dots? Would love some help on this, thanks =D

Do OCCT or Furmark stress two cards not working in SLI? I have a GTX 260 and a new Galaxy 9800GT dedicated to PhysX. I want to overclock it, but I would like to know if I can stress test it, otherwise, no overclock for me.

as far as i know the second or third card can be stressed together with primary one only when they are in SLI mode. otherwise you would have to swap cards and put the one you want to stress in primary slot (and run test in non-SLI mode).

Yeah I was hoping to avoid this. My old 9600GT PPU was overclocked since I had it as a primary GPU before. So I guess one day, I'll just stick my 9800GT in my other PC for O/C testing
