Specs:
Windows XP SP3
Mobo: ASUS - A8AE-LE (= AmberineM-GL6E)
Graphics Card: e-GeForce 8500 GT (PCI-E x16 slot)
External Display Adapter: EVGA UV+ 16 (run from USB port)

I've just run Windows Update (the one from January) and in the "optional hardware" section there was:

DisplayLink Corp DisplayLink Display Adapter (01AE)

It seems that's another absurd from Microsoft bundled in it's update service for no reason. Nvidia drivers apparently prevented it from being installed because I got "update failed" message:

Now I have this in C:\Program Files:

Does anyone else have all these folders? An attempt to uninstall all this results in "cannot uninstall" message:

I'm going to wipe out my drive C and restore it from the image (with Acronis Echo Workstation). Will post back with the results.

As it turns out, DisplayLink is Nvidia's competitor in the USB 2 DVI adapters market, which is all fine, but what does this have to do with updating Windows XP?

You might have a display link product installed or Windows thinks you have one installed:

Thanks for your answer. I've just restored my Windows XP from the image and it turns out that DisplayLink Core Software had been there before the latest Windows Update.

I guess in that case, considering my specs and the fact that none of the applications that I use specifically requires DisplayLink drivers, I don't need to waste time updating them from Windows Updates.

My theory is that DisplayLink Core Software was factory installed by Hewlett Packard together with other bloatware. I managed to uninstall most of this garbage, but there were a few cases where deleting folders was the only option, so there are some traces left over which prevent orderly uninstalling of DisplayLink.

PSU: Stealth Stream OCZ 600 SXS (600 W)
Mobo: ASUS - A8AE-LE (= AmberineM-GL6E)

Monitor #3 (USB): EVGA UV+ 16
