A3DSAIL -> RE: Looking for a CPU Air Cooler? Read this before you buy! (8/27/2008 6:07:36 PM)

Wow, good guide, Afterburner! You make many good points and list a lot of things to consider when buying a CPU cooler. I have always relied on reviews from sources I trust, like TweakTown, Frosty Tech and Anandtech among others. Anyone looking at CPU air coolers should check out the comparison charts at Frosty Tech and the top 5 Intel and AMD coolers separated by temperature and noise as FT sees it. TweakTown has good temp and noise comparison charts for some 25 different coolers and they have a rigorous testing procedure that helps level the playing field between the coolers for more accurate relative results. I also recommend CPU magazine for their reviews which are professional and insightful IMHO. Lastly, even though many coolers present more similarities than differences, innovation does exist. A more recent example is the generally good temp results obtained from a new cooler base design that eliminates the copper base plate that virtually all coolers use to sit on the CPU's Integrated Heat Spreader. Instead, the heat pipes themselves are flattened at the base and sit directly on the IHS. This removes the extra copper surface plate through which heat would have to travel thus making the heatsink more effective. The image below shows the base of the Sunbeamtech core-contact freezer CPU cooler. [image]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd281/A3DSAIL/EVGA%20Forums/sunbeamtech_ccf.jpg[/image] The Sunbeamtech core-contact freezer cooler has produced very good temps and is ranked very high among all coolers. It's worth a look. Check it out here.
