WHy the Hyper 212? Ah u got it on sale at frys didnt ya? 34.99....I saw it there, but I had to go beyond and get better....The reviews put it at mid range...The HyperZ600R is the top 3 Air coolers on the market right now...With countless scyth coolers behind it..I figured ah whst the heck and got it for $59.99....I like it...temps idle at approx 32c @ stock 3.16GHz frequency..(According to CORE TEMP Prog.NOW INTEL SAYS TJMAXis NOT 100c, but 95c) dont know that its the best to monitor temps..It seems to read different over bios temps...Dunno...However if I bump the core speed to say 3.8GHz it sits at around 42c-46c...Now the Thermal paste I applied was a thin smeared amount around the cpu, dunno if it was enough, but I always used too mucj cause everytime I would change or redue, I notice the Thermal paste run out off the side of the cooler..

Afterburner -> RE: Looking for a CPU Air Cooler? Read this before you buy! (9/26/2008 5:15:43 PM)

I just purchased something I had not tried. I know the Thermalright 120 extreem will work the best for me, but I wanted to try anyways.

I'm replacing it all next week with what I know works, then I'll get down and dirty again with the temps and airflow.....

I use a combination of Hmonitor, Core temp and Speed fan. Hmonitor seems to be the best for what I do. I ignore the BIOS temps.... Never seem accurate for me anyway...

i read this whole thread and i think the one thing that wasn't added was ambient temps, not everyones room temp will be the same, and that can definitely effect comp temps.[;)]

Fixed... Second bullet point... Thanks!

no prob[:D]

This should be a sticky.

Afterburner -> RE: Looking for a CPU Air Cooler? Read this before you buy! (10/6/2008 11:00:19 PM)

I would love for this to be a sticky. I have sent PM's and asked questions about what they look for in a Sticky, etc... Never got a response so I figured they did not want to bother with it or it is simply not of the quality they want.

Thank you for saying so!

Thank you all for your input, greatly appreciated!

Used? mine has been beat up lol. I could never sell it to anyone because how beat it up it is. lol. Still debating on modding it to make it look all purdy. Your very welcome btw.

Are you kidding? Thinking? This is the best time to mod it by far! You already know all you can about it, now the fun can begin..... Can't wait to see your results....

I some ideas. I post a little bit of my idea in my Antec 900 question thread(general hardware section) I believe.

nice post Afterburner, i just have some "Enrichment Material" to add [:D]

heres a big cooler, does a really good job of cooling, the fans inside (so not asmuch noise), and the fan  that comes stock is pretty good.

now, the fan in this cooler is removable, so the minuet i got it out of the box i put a aftermarket fan in.

heres the HSF:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835154001

and heres my beastly fan:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999122

now that fan, its not quiet - and when you have 8 of them all at 100%, its REALLY not quiet

Thanks for adding your input!

Very nice! How bout a sticky?  I'm surprised no one has mentioned that yet!  I started out with the zalman 9700, then went to water cooling, and I could have really used that info beforehand to help plan my build!  [:)]

Afterburner -> RE: Looking for a CPU cooler? Read this before you buy! (8/27/2008 6:31:16 AM)

Good idea! I think in order for it to become a sticky it needs to have some rating. No one has rated it at this point . I have no idea if it is of quality to be a sticky either... Thanks for the good feedback though!

the answer to anyone's cooling questions:

http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/cpu/u120ex/product_cpu_cooler_u120ex.htm

best performance
fits virtual all motherboards even mine with stupid tall heat sinks right around the cpu
works well with 1 fan, or 2 fans, quiet or higher cfm or passiv if you so choose
best mounting setup for 775, period

the only questionable part of the TRUE is the cost, and if you cant justify an additional 20$ for the BEST cooling vs ok cooling, your wont last long in the overclocking hobby

the cost isn't that bad. i was gonna get a TRUE myself and was shopping around. the found a couple of stores that had the original TRU at less than $50. no fan of course. the review at anandtech has the TRU running at only up to 7 or so degrees higher that the TRUE. usually only at around 4-5 degrees at load and only 1-3 at idle. up to you if you think the extra 20 bucks is worth the couple of degrees.

that, and the review was using a x6800. 65nm tech. uber heat.

A3DSAIL -> RE: Looking for a CPU Air Cooler? Read this before you buy! (8/27/2008 6:07:36 PM)

Wow, good guide, Afterburner! You make many good points and list a lot of things to consider when buying a CPU cooler. I have always relied on reviews from sources I trust, like TweakTown, Frosty Tech and Anandtech among others.

Anyone looking at CPU air coolers should check out the comparison charts at Frosty Tech and the top 5 Intel and AMD coolers separated by temperature and noise as FT sees it.

TweakTown has good temp and noise comparison charts for some 25 different coolers and they have a rigorous testing procedure that helps level the playing field between the coolers for more accurate relative results. I also recommend CPU magazine for their reviews which are professional and insightful IMHO.

Lastly, even though many coolers present more similarities than differences, innovation does exist. A more recent example is the generally good temp results obtained from a new cooler base design that eliminates the copper base plate that virtually all coolers use to sit on the CPU's Integrated Heat Spreader. Instead, the heat pipes themselves are flattened at the base and sit directly on the IHS. This removes the extra copper surface plate through which heat would have to travel thus making the heatsink more effective.

The image below shows the base of the Sunbeamtech core-contact freezer CPU cooler.

[image]http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd281/A3DSAIL/EVGA%20Forums/sunbeamtech_ccf.jpg[/image]

The Sunbeamtech core-contact freezer cooler has produced very good temps and is ranked very high among all coolers. It's worth a look. Check it out here.

Ok, I rated ya post for you! [:)]  Gave it a -2!  Just kiddin, a post such as this deserves +2.  Air cooling does have it's merits.  I'm only getting marginally better results with my watercooling versus my 9700.  Temps are good, around 38 on load. Cheers!

andy2108 -> RE: Looking for a CPU Air Cooler? Read this before you buy! (8/27/2008 10:21:49 PM)

rated +2 as-well

lastsamurairick -> thanks this helps alot (2/16/2009 7:19:28 PM)

[:D]I am building a new tower from two so as to have more room for fans, lights &hdd since I am putting the HDD down away from my cpu and gpu. Intel Q6600 2 quad core revision GO not overclocked yet but soon after much read research, Mobo is EVGA 780i sli ftw 132-YW-E178-AI,working fine right out of the box I build it my self,GPU EVGA 260 CORE 216 896 MB SUPERCLOCKED,I tell this set rocks I am glad I dropped XFX since I could not even register for my warranty.I send them so many e-mails to no hope never one answered.that rude.
