relfel66 -> GTS 250 Not recognized in HP M7640n (6/1/2009 11:47:18 PM)

Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6 GHz
ASUS A8M2N-LA
EVGA GTS 250 SC 512MB
BFG GX-550 500W
3 GIG RAM
WIN XP SP3

This machine has on board Geforce 6150 that I disabled in BIOS (latest update 3.10) . When I install the card it doesn't show up in device manager, and no picture, I bought a EVGA 8500GT 1 GB about a year ago and it did not work either, I chalked it up to the 300W power supply and returned to Futureshop and no problems, bought the new card and supply and nothing. I think it is the PCI-E slot, but its just a guess. Bought at NCIX, should i get a new card or take it to Staples (have extended warranty) and have them check. Should I bring the card along or have them test with one of their cards? I am assuming I should not do the rebate and cut the code off the box. Any help appreciated, wife was already pissed I spent the money, don't need her making fun of me too.........

first thing I would check is to see if the card is working correctly in another machine if possible. As you do have two cards that do not seem to work, also to double check what are you showing in your device manager of windows under the Display Adapter section? You will have to disable the onboard from both the BIOS as well as the Device Manager in Windows.

I don't know anybody with a machine that could handle card, most of my friends and family look at me as their technical support so plugging the card in another comp is out of the question. The onboard 6150 works fine, I just wanted to upgrade, I have pci-e selected in bios, and have disabled the 6150 in device manager. The Gts 250 doesn't show in device manager, but the fan is spinning. Pci-e power cord is hooked to the card have checked to see that card is seated and all cords have been rechecked. Monitor is Viewsonic VX922 which takes DVI

As soon as you start up the computer, windows should detect the new card and install drivers for it.Are you even getting the warning ,windows detects new hardware? Plus thats a pretty old computer since the last bios update is listed as 2004.

you have to disable onboard graphics in the Bios in order for a pci-e card to work.

Last Bios was from end of 06 and I do have the on board disabled (in device manage and in the bios. I have display adapter set in the bios as pci-e.

Tried to install card from scratch again. Windows does not recognize the card when booted

Hehe, well I will give you the short and skinny version of why.

HP when making motherboards for customer products sometimes will lock the BIOS to outside influences.

Your PC has the following specs:
Motherboard manufacturer's name: ASUS A8M2N-LA
HP/Compaq name: NodusM3-GL8E

Notice the HP/Compaq name. Usually what happens is when HP gets a board from ASUS or in this case it is an ASUS board from AMD they will lock out various parts of the BIOS, sometimes they manipulate the BIOS and PCI speeds so that a card may not be recognized.

Now since you probably already went to the ASUS website in search of a BIOS update, they do not list ASUS A8M2N-LA, they do however list a A8M2N-L, they also have a BIOS update that is in 2009.... so if you want to chance it the link is below.

Link to M2N-L

In fact, I will check in to the department for BIOS and see if I can find a BIOS update for the machine.

That would be great, I ran pc doctor 5 on it and did a pci express status test and came up failed with a failure code of mb152-15w. Everything I have read about the code says that the slot is no good.
