Poor Performance with GTX 580 running Flight Simulator X

Greetings, I am having performance problems with Flight Simulator X using an EVGA GTX 580. I have a new computer build with the following configuration: Processor: 3.06GHz Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield LGA 1366 Quad-Core Processor Motherboard: ASUS Rampage III Formula RAM: 12GB Corsair Dominator 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 1536MB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 SLI Power Supply: Antec TruePower Quattro 1000W Power Supply Monitor: 27" ASUS VE276Q 1920X1080 2ms HD HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit All components are new and installed with the latest drivers. When running Flight Simulator X the screen gets very "choppy" and lags terribly. I'm averaging around 8 to 12 FPS. Please tell me this expensive video card is capable of much more than this. Thank you in advance for your help and configuration advice. Cecil

Thanks guys, I went ahead and re-installed the drivers and Direct X on the EVGA CD. That fixed it. I appreciate your quick responses and will definitely edit the fsx.cfg file tonight. Thank you again. Cecil

Also keep in mind FSX is heavily CPU speed dependent. It's "multi-threaded" but hardly uses the other cores at all except for minor stuff and does not use HT "cores" at all. It also depends on where you are flying. If I fly around Sacramento CA where just my terrain mesh and weather addon is running, I easily get 55-80FPS sitting at the airport at 1680x1050 with fairly aggressive settings, maybe a bit less in weather. If I fly around Seattle where I also have a massive scenery addon called PNW Blue running, I get about 20-28fps sitting at the airport if I'm lucky, and weather will kill it even farther. A new card over my old 260 for instance when I moved to the 560 did help some, it gave me a few frames at Seattle even as painful as it already was. You can turn on DX10 preview mode and gain a bit of framerate but it's really a beta mode and has problems like 3rd party addons not always working with it, and if you use the taxi assistance to draw the line, it doesn't show up in DX10 mode.

Pretty impressive, flyinion. I am totally amazed by the performance of this card. I'll have to fly into Seattle on my next trip in my A2A Simulations B-17G! I edited the fsx.cfg file, daveyd007. That made a big difference in my frame rates...thanks! Cecil

For a really nice Seattle environment, use ORBX's - FTX Pacific Northwest, FSGLOBAL 2010, and MyTraffic 2010. To take away the CPU bound stutter issue in FSX, increase the resolution to max setting, and max out "Quality" with AA, like so: Nvidia Control Panel - Anti-aliasing Mode = "Enhance the application" then select "SLI 48xQ" in the drop down menu (save & Exit) now go back to FSX and select unlimited FPS, then turn the sliders all the way up if you are running 3 or 4 way SLI. FYI- "Microsoft Flight" will be released later this year. Have fun, and enjoy! :)

Don't forget REX2 for weather sim and weather/water texture and animation replacements. Also the freeware addon FS Water Configurator to really bling out the water. If there is an ORBX scenery addon available for the areas you fly, they're amazing. Both in their visuals...........and their drain on system resources (but definitely worth it). Another bonus if you can get it is FS Genesis terrain mesh. No more "round" hills and mountains. Here's a few of default ground textures, FS Genesis terrain, REX2 weather with 4096K cloud textures on approach to Anchorage Alaska a while back

jeepn Great thread! I did start a FSX thread in the games secion if any of you are interested! lol yeah probably a good idea to move to there since this thread including the OP have all gone off the topic of their 580 problem and now we're just talking about FSX here.
