Hi, I'm new too folding. I've done some on my ps3 which I leave at my parents. They are very skeptical so they won't do it themselves. I'm less skeptical, I've done 16 units so far. And you guys have given me a ton of great information on how to optimize folding and why you're so into it.

To begin your questions I must direct you to Stanford's actual folding at home page located at
          http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Main

Within this site you will find answers to many of your questions and more.

One, folding is addicting because among other things you get to help man kind for the greater good. Evga also gives evgabucks which also is a good incentive:
          http://www.evga.com/evgabucks/
However everyone's reasoning is different. I believe mankind needs to learn all they can about protiens and how they work. This is accoplished using vurtial protiens and their folding. The science behind that can be better explained here:
          http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Science.

Two, From what I understand and have read about the folding teams successes, there are a great many things that have been learned about the proteins in our body. No one thing can be discovered in the whole of the folding project. They are laying the foundation of knowledge for other scientists and biologists to capitalized on the research. I can however direct you to the papers site, granted you wanted laymens terms but many of the summaries provided can tell you their results.
          http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Papers

And three, I wouldn't let your parents be skeptical theirs no reason to be. The progress they have made in protein dynamics is proof that there system works and is credible.

First of all, shouldn't this thread be moved to the Help and Guides forum? I mean it's there so that's what it should be used for. Otherwise, it's probably best just to get rid of the forum and stick with one discussion group. Perhaps another forum could be created for milestones and free up this forum for discussions and help questions.

Second, welcome to all newbies. The reason why fah is addicting is because you soon realize that if you stop folding for gaming or work (God forbid), then this greatly impacts your ppd. Also, you start to see other posts such as the recent thread from someone who is getting 50k ppd on his new i7-2600k at 5ghz ON STOCK AIR. For a reasonable amount of effort, you can earn 10 evga bucks a month that you can use to purchase a P67 mobo (why does evga only have one... but I digress) for the new chips so you can increase your ppd. You can see where this is going...

To start with, try jedi95's FAH Tracker V2 explained here:
            http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=219556
Use this to set up your cpu and gpu clients. I've decided to remove the individual client links that I used to have here because the FAH Tracker is easier to use. Keep checking for updates because jedi is the man!
            ---
Although pretty, don't open the Viewer. It slows down your clients and could cause your system to crash. If you want to play with pretty molecules, check out http://fold.it from my alma mater, University of Washington. Go Huskies!
            ---
Most i7 with 8 cores use bigadv after 10 WU are completed. Use 7 cores if running a fermi or mulitple gpus. When I'm pissed off at the 670x wus, then I shut off the smp client and run the uni-core client. Please do not delete wus because it messes with the server and makes more crappy work for the rest of us.

            Acronyms:
PPD = Points Per Day (How you measure the client's performance. The uni-core client will net you about 300 PPD while the bigadv client is over 25k PPD.)
WU = Work Unit (The number that Stanford assigns each project.)
TPF = Time Per Frame (How long it takes to process 1%.)
GROMACS = The programming core that Stanford uses. www.gromacs.org
rklapp = PPD/watt for each client. This is how I measure the folding efficiency of each computer device.

Thanks for the links, lots of good stuff, guys. (I had searched around a bit and was using the FAH Tracker 2.) It's good to know that I shouldn't delete WUs. I haven't done it, but it might have run through my mind in the future.  And I agree that my questions are off topic I will delete them. I feel like they've been adequetly answered so far but if I have further questions I'll take them to the appropriate forum.

You're questions are fine and relevant... it's this entire thread's location that I question. Why isn't a thread named "New EVGA Folder Check-IN" in the Help and Guide forum?

As I said, the H&G forum should be recombined with the Discussion forum and another one created for milestones (or bragging... whatever you want to call it). This makes more sense to me.

On a side note, hey look... it comes with Civilization V!

                  Hello,

I'm not going to lie, I'm switching teams for the eVGA bucks and hopefully my HTPC will benefit with more PPD on down the line.  I have been contributing to Folding@Home under David_Boaz for the last several years and my total score was right at 9M.  Decided to see what my current hardware can do this year under the name DBoaz with eVGA.  I am a Chemist by trade and appreciate the good research the Pande group performs year after year.

I guess I should formally introduce myself. I have been folding for team Engadget for many years, but a few months ago I introduced a friend of mine to EVGA's products and to folding@home. Some of you might know Great_Shovel, I showed him the light of EVGA products. I however never thought of looking at EVGA for its forums or Folding Team, he did. After finally upgrading to my 950 this christmas I decided to join EVGA's folding team to take advantage of the EVGA bucks program. Anyway to make a long story short(too late, I know) just wanted to say hello to everyone.

Hey guys, just added myself to list. However, I made a mistake: I chose the year 2010.
                                Can someone correct this, please?

                                Also, Januari Janurary is misspelled.

I'm folding on only one machine using only the GPU until I get a full-fledged WC system in place.

Welcome. You'll find that folding will stress your systems much more than LinX overnight. Don't be surprised if you start losing bidadv wus after two days of processing. You may want to downclock to 4.0 if this starts to happen. In fact, don't use bigadv until you've finished your first 10 smp wus with the passkey. This will definitely tell you how stable your system is.

Come to think of it, I don't remember the last time I shut down and blew the computer. (I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.)

                                  ---
To start with, try jedi95's FAH Tracker V2 explained here:
                                  http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=219556
Use this to set up your cpu and gpu clients. I've decided to remove the individual client links that I used to have here because the FAH Tracker is easier to use. Keep checking for updates because jedi is the man!

Although pretty, don't open the Viewer. It slows down your clients and could cause your system to crash. If you want to play with pretty molecules, check out http://fold.it from my alma mater, University of Washington. Go Huskies!

                                            Hey guys,
I guess kinda just officially started folding as well.
IDK how to compare to you guys, but I have an i7 O.C and a GTX 570 and I'm folding with the GPU.
I seem to be pushing about 3-4k points per day.

Is that good or is that kinda low?

A single 570 should be pushing 12-15k i believe. and with your cpu oc you should be able to push 12-30k on the cpu depending on if youre running bigadv jobs or not

I'm folding with a 570, too. Here are my stats, but bear in mind I also game with it, so it's not 24/7.

Linx stable at 4.25 GHz and cooled using one 120 mm radiator.

                                                  Hey guys,
I guess kinda just officially started folding as well.
IDK how to compare to you guys, but I have an i7 O.C and a GTX 570 and I'm folding with the GPU.
I seem to be pushing about 3-4k points per day.

Is that good or is that kinda low?

Please post what program you used to set up your clients. ex. GPU tracker, tray or console client.
Are you only folding with your GPU or both CPU and GPU. 3-5k is very low for that set up, but we can fix you up.
                                                  Welcome to the team.

Hi there, I'm fairly new to the forum and to folding. I tried folding a bit in November with my 9800GTX+ SC SLI set up and the evga folding program, but only stumbled onto the FAH tracker this month. I'm now set up to fold all day while I'm on campus and most evenings with my 580 SC rig. Thanks for the welcome/info!

I just downloaded this http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?&m=601959 Jedi95´s folding tracker.
I got my nickname Junglekorak and I choose Evga team. Ofcourse.

My first task running... GPU is 73C with fanspeed of 61% (on auto). So hopefully thats ok.

I have no idea if Im doing it right, but lets see :)

How can I get that folding bar on the left under my info?

And, if my folding running behind, and then I want to do gaming, or I need to turn off the comp, can I put it on "PAUSE" and continue later or is it lost data then?

No data is lost when you pause it. It will pause automatically when it detects a game. You can check this via Setup | Test Game List. If it doesn't recognize your game running, create a file in your FAH directory\CONFIG called Games-add.txt and add the .exe file. See the existing Games.txt on the format.
