Why We Fold -- Sign Up Thread Friday, October 22, 2010 8:00 AM (permalink)

This is the sign-up thread.   |   The Daily Journal can be found HERE.

::: Briefly...
This thread is a daily updated archive of the reasons we Fold. Please volunteer to "lead" a given calendar day. Share your motivation for Folding and it'll be posted at the top for everyone else to draw inspiration from that day.

::: Our Purpose
Everyday, please make this thread your first stop on the forums. Each day, one member will share:
  • His or her REASON for Folding.   Or,
  • Something he or she has sacrificed or endured for the cause.   Or,
  • An inspiring citation demonstrating the benefits of this type of research.

YOU could post a picture of a loved one who suffers from a disease we are fighting... or a hilarious or moving personal story, or a short anecdote or catchphrase that always keeps you Folding. Whatever it is, so long as it is important to YOU, it will be important to all of us. Let's all take one member's motivation, and for that one day, share it; Fold harder, every day, because of it. That is the whole spirit of Folding, to take what resources we have (including the most important: our own motivations) and share them for the betterment of everyone.

::: The Mechanics
  • Please sign up for a date in this thread.  (Make your scheduled post in the Daily Journal.)                      I'll send you a reminder PM the day before your date
  • On your chosen day, post your photo, story, video, etc in the Daily Journal thread. I will add it to the first post of that thread until the next day, so that everyone can quickly check in and see what today's extra inspiration for Folding is. Plus this thread will be a living archive of all the past reasons. Put the date and "My reason" in big letters at the top of your post!
  • Every time a new member posts a "how do I get started?" thread, show them this and encourage them to lead a day after they're all set up. Let's make this a core part of our daily operations. It will make everyone involved, everyone a leader. And it'll keep our eyes on the real prize.
  • If someone here or elsewhere starts talking about corporate Folding, well... Show 'em this, and say no more. Here's one consolidated demonstration of why we Fold, and if this doesn't move 'em, then nothing will. Don't waste a single word fighting another Folder; only fight diseases. Other teams are welcome to join us!
  • Feel free to post multiple times -- you can share little pieces of your story or research or whatever on different days.
OTHER TEAMS:
Please feel free to participate here, or make your own version at home and I'll link to it. Though we compete, we are all part of the same disease-whipping network!

::: Ideas to get you (yes, YOU!) started

And several threads from our very own forums. These are recent since the last archiving:

      Count me in.  I'll stake out 4/9/2011 as it's my Birthday, and it'll be fitting for me to do my reminder to myself as well as to the world as to why I do this.  If it looks like the sched is drying up, I'll move back to a nearer date, but for now, I want my birthday.

          Hopefully we'll be able to keep it running a long time... Many people probably have a lot of reasons, if we spread out sharing them all we could have this going a solid year or two. Thinking over family and things I've seen here the last few years, I for example could probably post 5-6 times.

          Hmm, what's better -- sticky at the top, or having it bump/update near the top of the section every day? Do you guys usually notice new posts in the stickies?

          PS, aren't you going to nab a date? Pretty please ...........

            I notice when any new post is made regardless of where it is on the page.

            Too bad you didn't start yesterday, I could have volunteered do it for my bithday. Before I volunteer for a day, let me think of something good to say (got a couple of examples, just need to pick one and get good wording).

              I would like to see it stickied at the top. EVGA members probably wouldn't have trouble finding it if it was down the list, but visitors might. Bumps are supposed to be a nono.. no?

              OK OK.. January 5th 2011 will be my day to post..pushy..

                No problem. Keep in mind it'll keep things organized if you don't post it until the date, so feel free to pick a date now and word it later.

                                        Sorry to see that this has been moved off the top sticky area.  With the activity of this forum, it can be pushed out of sight pretty easily.  I think it was better placed at the top where it could be easily found/read each day.

                                                    Sure, there may be some flagging between the recruitment and first post, but if we let it die off, there may be a LOT of potential views that go away unless we flood the post with useless bumps.

                                                    So, we have a 'Catch 22' situation here . . . We can flood the post and keep it in view with hopes that more folks will see it and act, or we let it die it's natural death until the first writeup is submitted.  To me, neither is going to serve the purpose of the original post, but I'm not warthorn and can't claim to speak for him.  Just putting my $.02 out here.

                                                        Perhaps there should be a duplicate of the orig post that gets stickied, and we keep the 'recruitment' post - aka - this post going in the standard discussion?

                                                          I think we are spending too much time discussing whether it should be a sticky and not enough time signing up for days

                                                          Let it stay here awhile and let's see if we can get some more people to see it and join. If it's down here and interest for some reason still tanks (I don't think it will that fast) then AB can always move it back to the stickies. He's got our back and it's safe either way, no worries.

                                                            +1 to Droughnor's thoughts and "bumping" posts is a Forum T's&C's violation, so that really wouldn't help.  To me, this idea made a lot of sense to have as a sticky because it is really front and center to why people Fold in the first place and may encourage others to join-in.  I do realize that every time someone adds that Daily Lead, this thread will resurface, but on an active day around here, if it drifts off to page 2 (or further), I'll likely not look for it.  I tend to read just what is active for the day in most forums.
