My Accelero Xtreme Plus for GTX 480 review Friday, October 08, 2010 11:18 AM (permalink)
Arctic Accelero Xtreme Plus for the GTX 480

My test setup:
Case: 800D – w/ 120mm front inake (via sycthe kama bay) and modded 2 x 120mm side intake. Rear (exhaust) and bottom (intake) fans replaced with Xigmatek XLF 140’s. The top 2 exhaust fan bays are occupied by the H70 and OMNI.
CPU: i7 930@4.2ghz [1.35 vcore] w/ H70. Top mounted: Push>Shroud>Rad>Pull (using S-FLEX-G)
Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI E758
RAM: G.Skill 6gb 9-9-9-24 w/ Zalman RC1000 cooler.
Power supply: Corsair HX1000
Video cards: EVGA 480 2-Way SLI
                GPU 1 [PCI-E SLOT 1]: GTX 480 with OMNI ALC (Push/Pull with Scythe S-FLEX-F)
GPU2  [PCI-E SLOT 2]: GTX 480 with Arctic Accelero Xtreme Plus
*both cards are running PCI-E 16x/16x.

Note:
So i'm going to do a test in my SLI setup
>comparisions will be made between stock cooler (GPU2) & APX(GPU2)
- Again, i'll be playing the games that i have for 20 minutes. The stock cooler fan for the GTX 480 was running @80%, just because i played games at that fan speed.
*** = OMNI temp with Acclero Xtreme Plus on GPU 2 <---Just to see how much the AXP effects the OMNI due to the heat being blown up from the AXP.

Ambient room temp is: 23C (73.4F)
GPU 2: Stock – IDLE (after 30 mins):  40c
             APX    – IDLE (after 30 mins):  31c
***Omni (SLFEXF push/pull)      =  GPU 1: 32c

Gaming sessions at 20min each:
Playing Battlefield Bad Company 2: 1920 x 1200/Max settings/ 8x MSAA/8x AF/vsync on/DX11
Stock Cooler 80%  =  GPU 2: 59c (64c vsync off)
APX  (100%)           =  GPU 2: 47C  (51c vsync off)
***Omni (SLFEXF push/pull)      =  GPU 1: 50c  (55c vsync off)

vsync on

vsync off

Playing Far Cry 2: 1920 x 1200/Max settings/vsync on/DX10
Stock Cooler 80%   = GPU2:  58c (64c vsync off)
APX  (100%)            =  GPU 2: 46c (51c vsync off)
***Omni (SLFEXF push/pull)      =  GPU 1: 49c  (54c vsync off)

vsync on

vsync off

Playing Crysis Warhead 2: 1920 x 1200/Enthusiast settings/AF 8xQ/vsync off/DX10 64-bit
Stock Cooler 80%   =  GPU2: 70c
APX  (100%)            =  GPU 2: 53c
***Omni (SLFEXF push/pull)      =  GPU 1: 57c
- sorry no screen shots, EVGA precision doesn't work on 64-bit

Finally, some more coolers are pouring out for the very hot GTX480. The Xtreme Plus is a very good cooler and i'm "xtremely" happy with it. Installation was straight forward, and obviously just have to be patient and careful. Temp results are great, fans are running at 100% and its very quiet. Mind you my rigg has some moderate noise from all the fans i use but nowhere near loud.  So anyone looking into getting the Xtreme you won't be dissapointed. Its a massive and its a 3 slot cooler, but it does the job!

Some more pictures:

You're awesome.  Thanks for comparing the two!  As expected, the Accelero Xtreme Plus > OMNI and it costs just over a third of the price.

Niice job! Now i know if a back plate works when the Accelero is installed :D.

Q: How is the glue on the ram sinks and VRM's? From what i read on past generations (GTX 280) they tended to fall down after a while.

                  Thanks guys!

                  @EVGA_ShannonR
I know my OMNI got an increase in temps, but i haven't really took notice of my CPU or system temps. I briefly looked over my RealTemp recordings when i was playing Crysis, and my core temps were about 59c to like 63c. I THINK it increased temps by a little bit.

                  @AlexisR0
YIKES! Well so far so good, i did follow instructions and applied pressure for about 10 seconds. Haha i'll update you when they fall off. That sucks.
As for the backplate, i kinda slap that on "ghetto" style. I used 3 screws (2 from the default mounting plate of the AXP, and 1 from an old hard drive bay cage) I had to screw them on from the bottom-up.

Oh and here is a "real" Furmark test (kinda similar to my EVGA OC Scan test)
                  Ambient: 23.9c (74F)
                  Furmark: 10 minutes
                  Run mode: Stability , 1280 x 1024
                  GPU1 (OMNI) = 69c
                  GPU2 (APX) = 64c

You should be fine, I have been using those coolers for years and never had any trouble with the ram sinks coming off. As long as you cleaned off the ram chips real good before installation you should not have issues.
Also the longer they stay on there the less likely that they will come off because overtime as the ram sinks heat up they stick better.
Im loving my Sparkle GTX 480 with the arctic cooler on it, its awesome gaming at 950mhz core while getting temps no higher than 66c.

I looked into this for my current card at one time a while ago. The problem with it is that the GPU hole must be a little bit bigger and up from the GPU the radiator must be peeled. For someone who has the proper tools this modding wouldn't be a problem but there is a bit of work involved.

Im loving my Sparkle GTX 480 with the arctic cooler on it, its awesome gaming at 950mhz core while getting temps no higher than 66c.

Hoo-wee 36% oc on air! Of original Fermi! Am definitely getting one.
What voltage do you use to achieve stability @ 66C and 950mhz?
                                thanks

I noticed that Accelero Xtreme Plus doesn't cool the 6 small chips at the right of voltage regulator, whilst stock cooler does. Could this become a problem?

I hope a new cooler will allow me to break 863/1726 using the same 1.138 VGPU.  Can't go any farther on the stock cooler, but lowering temps especially on the VREGs should let me go higher.  I'll be getting the Thermalright Shaman but damn nice results guys.

Im using 1.38vc which is the max that msi afterburner will allow. I have been tempted to flash the bios and push for 1ghz on the core as im certain I could do it with a bit more voltage.

In all honesty though its probably a mute point to do so as the card is already screaming fast enough as it is.

So for 36% gpu overclock you're increasing voltage by 38%

At the moment with stock 480 cooler, I'm stable at 860 gpu, fan 82%, but at only 1.075 volts
So a 23% overclock for 7.5% voltage increase
For the sake of your card, try running 950mhz @ 1.25 or 1.3 volts to see if it's still stable.

Are you overclocking memory to a lesser extent?

EDIT: Just realized a mistake I think we're both making, you mean 1.138v, not 1.38v, right?

Your GTX 480 is a true gem.

I count myself very, very lucky at the chip I happened to get

Although I do run it with the case wide open (headphones!), make sure room temp is never over 20C, and I replaced TIM with AS5.

EDIT: Just realized a mistake I think we're both making, you mean 1.138v, not 1.38v, right?

yeah sorry, its 1.138vc. I could probably go lower on the voltage for 950mhz but have not really tried it yet. My stock voltage is .988 and I can reach 830mhz core gaming stable without even touching the vcore.  Seems i got a crazy chip.

Realized something else! I thought you were saying you had installed the AXP on your card like the OP, but if it's Sparkle then obviously it came with the AXP installed.

The AXP is clearly the reason you can go to 830mhz without touching the voltage.
