Gtx 660ti over 80C on load is this normal?

I bought an evga gtx 660ti regular edition not SC and the idle temp is around 45C and load while playing can go up to 81C. Is this normal for the card? on reviews it says the card should be 69C on load and on nvidia website the card can only take out to 97C. How do i fix this. I have 3 fans on my case and it still goes up to this while running the ac as well. I was playing bf3 on ultra 1080p and tested temp using afterburner.

I wouldn't be too concerned. You generally should be more concerned about the temp delta (difference in idle and load). Those guys who "say" it should run load at 69C, don't tell us what their ambient temps are. My guess is that their room is around 30C. Not to say that cooler isn't better, because it always is, but 81 is fine for load. Just cool down your room a bit more;) To give you an idea: My idle is 32C. Load is 60C, so my delta is 28 degrees with my 680. However, I keep my AC on most of the time right now hehe. If you provide a picture of your rig, and how it is set-up, I am sure some of the guys here who do more air-cooling than I do will gladly provide some suggestions.

Are you using percision x to monitor your temps/card usage and fan percentage? If so make sure you setup a custom fan profile. It will be in the settings panel of percision x. That is a high temp for your card. They start to downclock after 70c to help with temps. So its recommend you keep it under 70c. You fan might just be on auto and not firing up when the temps get high. If you use percision x it will tell you how fast the fan is going. A good starting fan profile is 40c-40%,50c-50%,60c-60%, etc. You can adjust it by clicking on the graph in the setting panel under fan and setting it to whatever works best for you.

Is that why bf3 felt kind of stuttery after awhile? Cause of downclock? Ill try the fan in precision. But does precision need to be started on startup for these to apply or can it be set permanently.

Set it to run at windows start up and have it running in the background. Unless it is running, it won't control the fans.

If you click apply on startup on the main screen and save your settings it will launch precision automatically whenever your start you computer. Down clocking could be related to stuttering since your pretty much loosing performance every time it down clocks.

Neal, what is the throttling temperature at which you begin to lose performance due to downclocking? Is it around 75 or something?

MSi afterburner has the same problem where it doesn't start when you use it on a non admin account. Precision x is probably the same. Are any of you guys in the same boat as me on that cause i need to know how you fixed it.

Personally, I'd be pretty concerned. I have two 660s and in sli and the hottest I got was 78c. 72c is normally the highest it will go and GPU #2 which has better airflow never gets to 70c, and that's without setting up a custom fan profile.

Johnny_Utah Neal, what is the throttling temperature at which you begin to lose performance due to downclocking? Is it around 75 or something? As soon as it hits 70c it starts to downclock. If i remember correctly i thought it was in intervals of like 13hz. It will just keep going down until you hit 69c, then it will go back to normal. When i first got my 670's i messed with my clocks to see how far they would go and got the temps past 70c and remember bf3 "stuttered" a little bit as the clock changed. I have a 1200hz overclock on both my 670's now and just use a powerful fan profile since whenever im running a game the sound over powers the fan. I have it set to 40c-40%, c50-60%, 60c-70%, 69c-max. With that profile set on both my cards i never have any temp problems and they never down clock. They idle average around 28-32c and at load the max ive ever seen my top card hit is 63c. Does a good job at keeping my cards cool as the temps rise and maintaining a lower temp longer.

I have 3 120mm fans in my case. one in front and one in side blowing air in and one in rear blowing air out. Is it my case design or something? Or is my fans bad? The name of my case is: APEVIA X-CRUISER2 I would have posted my actual setup but no time right now. Ill post pics tmm. But I will say wiring is out of the way. SO its not a airflow problem due to wires.

So today I cleaned the fans a little bit and setting the evga profile. I also too of the black cap that was on the sli interface. Idk if the cap made any difference or not tho. The card now peaks at 67C. I think I will also buy a better rear exhaust fan. The current one barely blows out air.

Not too bad.. My MSI GTX 660Ti NEVER reached over 61c yet. Never over 54c or so, but with full voltage and core at 1210MHz, it barely hits 61c.

Do you have the powercooler one? That one comes with better fans. I have the evga version.

Yeah, the MSI one. But yeah, 80c or so isn't bad. I'd be happy. I never worry till 90c, then I kinda don't like it. But hey it's about to start cooling off, then it'll even drop cooler under load man. :)

Well the reason I am worried is that these cards get damaged at 97C unlike previous nvidia cards which were around 107C or so. So i am guessing these should run cooler. IF my gtx 460 for example hit 80C i wouldn't worry but this 660ti i will.
