Freezing all the time...think it is the SSD Monday, August 06, 2012 7:40 PM (permalink)
Hi all, I have recently started experiencing a lot of complete freezes when i cant even ctrl-alt-del or do anything. No BSOD or black screen the video is just frozen. It has never recovered from it. I have a feeling my SSD might be messed up. HD tune reports that it is at 128 degrees but does not feel that hot and it should have a lot more problems if it is that hot.  One thing i have noticed is that it takes a lot longer for windows to boot. I cant get it to crash manually using any benchmarks and I never crash running cpu or gpu tests. Any ideas what could be going on. Thanks.

Well SSDs don't run hot since they don't have moving parts. HDTune is just reporting the wrong temperature.

Try a reformat to see if it helps.

      1.  Did you update your marvell driver?
      2.  Did you set your Sata port (connected to the SSD) to ACHI or Raid in your BIOS?
      3.  Is the SSD properly connected to your Sata Cable and Power cord?
      4.  Have you checked Mushkin's website to see if others are having the same problem, or if there's a fix?

Like direraptor22 said earlier.  HDTune is reading the temperature wrong.  You're SSD isn't that hot, so don't worry about it.

Typically, you can't crash an SSD with a benchmark.  I've never seen it happen.  Normally, when I see a screen lockup with no BSoD or Black screen, it's typically a graphics issue, but that's if your playing a PC Game or program that utilizes the gpus.  When does your screen lockup?  What are you doing just when it's about to lock up?

Are you overclocking by any chance?

          1.  Did you update your marvell driver?  not recently but I am not using it anyway
          2.  Did you set your Sata port (connected to the SSD) to ACHI or Raid in your BIOS? AHCI
          3.  Is the SSD properly connected to your Sata Cable and Power cord? Yes lol this has been running for almost a year now with no problems

At first I thought it was only during games but not any more. It does it within a couple minutes even when not doing anything.

Yes i am currently at 4.0 with no temp problems and I have had that oc for almost 2 years now. About 3 months ago I got a vcore BSOD and bumped that a notch and then passed 20 passes of linx and it has been fine. My 460s are at stock settings and only get OCd when benching.

my computer has been experiencing this exact issue. at first, i thought it was my ssd, but have recently figured out that one of my 580's was causing the lockup.

When removing the suspect 580 from my system, the lockups go away.

perhaps you should look into this a bit more.

i also had periods of no issue, just would work sometimes. But the issue always seemed to return so i dug a bit more and found my gpu as the culprit.

and you have seen all of the freezing stop after you pulled that one out? also how did you figure out which one it was? I was thinking just run with only one till it freezes and if it does pull it out and try the other one and see if that one will as well. However with it being so random if the freezing stops I wont really know if it is still being random or it has just stopped temporarily.

for me, i pulled the cards, put one in, ran it for a few days, it worked fine. swapped it for the other card, ran it for a little before it froze. swapped the cards again, and have been running without issue for over a week now. so one of my cards has no issues, while the other card freezes. So that is how i determined the suspect card.
