I don`t understand that, because on my Afterburner Display. The Fan button appears to be greyed out but I can still enable it by pressing on it.
May I ask what your temps are and what led you to the conclusion that they might be overheating?

Did you try to manually slide the Fan Speed % slider, at the bottom. This baffles me as to why it won`t work!

Hi Alan, i'm not sure if this is any help to you but here goes .....

First I would remove all the programs , Afterburner , Precision X , and NVidia Tools ( might not hurt to run driver sweeper and reinstall the video drivers too ).  Download and install the latest version of Afterburner from here http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

If you click the "AUTO" button as seen below you should have manual control of the slider , don't forget to hit apply when done , your fans will then be locked at that speed as long as afterburner is open so you should also click on the apply overclock at startup in the lower left under profile , then it will go to that speed whenever you start your rig.

In order to setup a dynamic fan profile click on the user define button , then settings and then the fan tab.

tick the box and this will appear. you can move the boxes to set the fan to speed up at a lower temp ( don't forget to hit apply when done )

If you get errors with servers kicking you out while gaming with "disallowed driver" or other errors , open afterburner , click on the small icon by the clock as shown , this willl open Rivatuner (part of afterburner)

click the bar to turn Stealth Mode ON (it's off by default) it seems like Punkbuster thinks that Afterburner's overlay is some sort of a hack on some systems.

If that fails I would reinstall windows and start over from the beginning "Nice and Clean" .  I have not had good experiences with Nvidia tools and Precision X seems geared towards the 600 series , I don't own a single MSI product but I prefer Afterburner for oc'ing my cards.  But that's just me

      I believe that's what I suggested

Have you tried uninstall the nVidia drivers then using the driver sweeper to remove all the remnants of the drivers?

Hope I can help you out with this matter.  So did you individually put each GTX 480SC in the PCI-E slot where you always put them and test them one by one than put the GTX 470 and it worked no problem (Fan RPM readings and Full Control)?...........sorry I caught your remark earlier about the Bios and did the Bios match up from each of the 480s?   Also are there any fan readings (RPM) from any of the 480s you can't control?  If you're having any issues always do one card at a time or use one than the other one for a few days if not a week each to be sure.  Very rare that both cards go bad but its possible.  Do you get any BSODs and if you did post the BCCodes and you said they overheat?  You gotta get a little more specific so we can see where the issue is coming from.  I'd get some rest and get better before you try and troubleshoot this issue as it can take a toll mentally and physically (now I sound like a Dr. :P) and you would end up missing the main issue/fix.

man...this is getting real frustrating. I've been thinking about this since the beginning of your thread. I think you should RMA but first give evga a call at;  1-888-880-3842.

Yeah...... This is definitely a mind boggler to say the least! I have not had to mess with my fan settings on my 480`s for 2 years or so, since they have been watercooled. The first 2 or 3 months I had them on air and recall having no problem adjusting the fan speed.
I did recently, and during this discussion, try adjusting the fan on my 260GTX(Physics card). It worked perfectly fine.

OP said he has no problem with adjusting fan on a GTX 470 in the same system. Hmmmm.

I`m still curious what your temps were and if you were having artifacts and/or CTD`s.

Ok even bigger mystery now. I have 2 cards. Lets call them card A and card B. I had both cards installed and I started having issues with adjusting fan speed. So I reinstalled windows 7. After I reinstalled windows 7 both cards again still didnt work. So I took card B out and tried t o get it to work with just card A. It didnt so I placed card B in there and I have been working with it for the last 2 days. I havent been able to get it to work. I tried my daughters gtx 470 and it worked fine. So I played with that for a day. I had to put it back in her PC so I put card A back into my computer and wham now its working fine.

So (Edited out for language) is going on lol. I am laughing right now but seriously I am getting very upset. This makes no sense at all.
And I want to confirm that I know more then the average person does about PC. Maybe not as much as you guys but still I am pretty knowledgeable. I just cant figure it out.

Ghost in the machine perhaps? Maybe by re-seating the card multiple times, it just finally decided to work correctly!
