Need some big time help, just got my 670 ftw and i cant get drivers to install... Tuesday, July 31, 2012 4:06 PM (permalink)
The card is in, the fan is moving....yet when i got to install drivers, it just keeps failing. Im not sure what else to do right now, i need a few suggestions perhaps. It wont even install the standard vga driver that windows tries to install.

Heres a question, does the actual monitor adapter have anything to do with card installations? Because heres the thing, my monitor has a dvi plug that is different than the one evga gave me in the box. And i cant change it, but i could use an hdmi. But i wouldnt think that the monitor hookup has anything to do with installing drivers, or would it?

What is listed under display adapters in your device manager?

It says "standard vga graphics adapter" with the exclamation mark, and inside it says that it can not start.

Have the latest NVIDIA driver you want to use on your desktop for easy access.  First right click the standard vga graphics adapter listed in device manager and select to uninstall it.  Get driver sweeper and use it to scan for all NVIDIA drivers.  Delete all search results followed by restarting upon being prompted to do so.  Upon returning to your desktop use driver sweeper to scan again and delete results followed by restart.  Repeat this until no results show, then close driver sweeper and install the driver.

I believe the cause of this problem to be the prior video driver from your last card creating a conflict with your new card.  Always a good idea to uninstall your video card drivers completely before turning your computer off to install a new video card.

try a clean install. Uninstall drivers then get driversweeper and run it in safemode and make sure you get rid of all nvidia stuff then reboot and try to run the new drivers.

So far i did all of it but its just not taking. Heres a question, do i want the standard vga adapter to be installed correctly, and then the nvdivia drivers will install over top of the standard install?

I mean heres a question, would the card fan be moving if the card was dead? I just want to sort of get that outa the way as a possibility, or does that not matter?

Try another driver.  If the card was dead you would not have an image of your desktop on your screen.  You would prob get the standard message from your display stating there is no signal.  Does not mean the card is not malfunctioning, but I would think the inability to install a driver to be on the software side of things.

Make sure you are downloading the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version of the driver that is appropriate for your OS, as well as choosing the other appropriate options.

Within the driversweeper a C:/nvidia keeps ending up in there for the display, ive been in safe mode and removed it then rebooted.

When windows tries to install the standard vga adapter drivers two things happen, one it says its installed correctly but in CP it shows it as not working. Or it will just say it has failed to install the driver.

My cpu is an i7 920, X58 giga mobo, 6gb of ram cant remember the exacts on it but they were the best i could get when i built this machine...and im running vista 64.

Which makes me think for a second here, are these drivers perhaps not made for vista?

Select the proper configuration and download the appropriate driver directly from NVIDIA.

When it gets on the screen for the evga installer, it goes through the first 3 checks then on install it goes right to "Installer failed".

THis is just unreal, takes all the fun out of it...im so annoyed right now, wife just cant understand either what its like getting parts for 400 bucks and you cant get it to work.

Just amazing, i have no idea what could be preventing this from installing.

Try reseating the card, check all connections. What power supply do you have, and how old is it? What card did you have previously? Do you have a spare hard drive to try a clean install?

If you can successfully install your old video card and the driver for it, and then put your GTX670 in and have the same problem, I dunno what else to say but call EVGA for RMA unless HotRodPolk has some ideas to fix this.

Do you have an Anti Virus program running? If so, disable it temporarily and try installing drivers again.

So this whole thing is really bugging me tonight.
I was running a 295, and my power supply is a pretty good corsair...so i dont think thats my issue.

My gtx 295 fired right back up when i put it into the machine. I just dont get why the 670 will not install.

I keep getting a code 10 when the 670 is in there, it simply does not install.

I am so trying to avoid a clean windows install here, its been so long since ive done that...does windows have an option that will back up your files before it does a fresh install? I recall doing that before, or do i just make a backup of everything?

I wish i could know if my card is DOA.

But here is my question, i have done a lot here tonight...are the chances greater that its a dead card than anything else? Or can this type of stuff be this bad in terms of drivers that cards simply dont install until whatever is preventing it is worked out?

First you can try resetting the ESCD data. There should be the option to do that in the BIOS. If that doesn't work, a complete BIOS reset with the 670 installed. Meaning, install the 670 shut own the system, turn off the PSU the press and hold the BIOS reset button on the motherboard for 30 seconds. If that doesn't work, you could try an 'in place OS upgrade' install. This will correct an issue if your driver store or registry has become corrupted. This would keep all your programs intact and just require you to install the Windows updates. Frankly there should be no need to use any of these so called driver sweeper program for normal driver installs. They cause as many issues as they are purported to solve IMO.

Doubt if your card is dead. And, no need to re- install Windows.
Is ther another nearby machine you could try?

I would pull the battery on the motherboard if the reset BIOS button doesnt do the trick.

Also, I have fixed a problem before with driver sweeper, never had a problem created by it : P

THis might turn on a lightbulb for some of you, so heres what i did...i had pulled the 670, put my 295 back in and everything was peachy. So i went on huge nvidia file erase spree, and when the 295 drivers were deleted the screen then popped to what im seeing with the 670, just huge icons etc... But then windows tried to reinstall the 295 on its own and it failed.

So after i cleared it all out, put the 670 back in...it is doing the same thing.

It seems for whatever reason the computer cant figure out what is there, i dont know if thats mobo, if thats vista 64...that seems to be the issue right now.

Does that lead you guys to any other avenues?

As I said, if you have a spare hdd, switch it out with your boot drive, try a fresh Vista install, with the 670 installed. (Vista is a pita, imo). I believe that 295 has a 1.0 pci-e, 670 has 3.0. While your mobo has 2.0...I have a feeling that's part of it, I had a similar issue when trying to get my 450 to work. I ended up with a paperweight shaped like a mobo, and bought my gigabyte, which saw it immediately.
You could get the latest bios for your mobo, and try it...Risky, yeah, but if I read right, your mobo is a Gigabyte, which has a backup bios, so if you screw it up, it can go to the backup...
Another thing you could try, download the win 8 release preview, either burn to DVD, or set up a thumb drive for boot (it's free). Install it on a spare drive, and it should see your 670, and install it. You can use this free for about a year...

See the only problem is i never did bios stuff really, in all my years i can handle a good bit of things but i would make new builds and always go from there and by the time that pc was crappin out id just build a new one.

So it scares me a bit to mess with bios and all that stuff, thats why im so foreign too it.
The 670 though says pci-e 2.0, so i mean i would hope that isnt the case that it just doesnt work with my board.

I just dont see how a new card could be this infuriating. It has killed every bit of excitement i had, i been sitting here since 5 in the evening and its 3am.

I recall XP backing up my files when i did clean installs and making a huge file within the new window install. Does vista do this as well? Because im sort of at that point where i want to do a clean install and just see what it does.

you could try a repair with the card in, Just stick the vista disk in, should be in the options.
BTW- just change resolution on that default driver, get rid of huge icons.
You can install win 8 right on top of vista, it'll save all your files if you check that option...8 is smart enough to fix problems whereas Vista isn't that advanced.
7 and 8 are based on Vista's kernel, just much more user friendly.
Have you tried installing card as administrator?

I actually had this problem before and what i had to do ( i dont have to no more now ) is do like above posters said and boot into safe mode and use driver sweeper to scan for nvidia files and delete, then upon restart i would unplug my net cable so windows wouldnt auto update. I manually installed the drivers and that fixed it for me. I dont have to do that no more for some reason but i had too when i was having my issue.

Im moving closer to doing what you say HotRod, but something i noticed here is this...when i went to adjust the display settings, i can set it to my 1920x1200 and the desktop looks picture perfect.

I wish i knew more on cards, but i didnt think that you could obtain that kind of resolution with a card that doesnt have its drivers installed.

                                                What do you think?

I still think poppin the battery out on the motherboard, press the power button, then wait 5min before putting the battery in is your best chance at resolving this problem.

That sounds like the OS-resident VGA driver you are setting.

Pulling the E-cable, uninstalling any EVGA/Nvidia drivers and rebooting and then loading the driver from the EVGA disk sounds like a clean an simple route. Hold off on hooking back up to the internet until you get results from this effort.

Actually, yeah, the res with default win vid is able to go pretty high.
Best bet is to flash the bios to the latest, should do the trick...

                                                        Don't let Windows install anything.
Windows 8 Preview is free and pretty good with hardware, dual displays and more.

You can use the ISO and clean install or use the Setup utility to run inside Vista.
Been awhile since used Driver Sweeper (3.2) but I found a lot of things during installs, updates, and uninstalls for CCleaner (3.2+) to clean up that did help with problem.
Sounds like you used Windows Easy Transfer (choose hidden folders, advanced options, if you want to get it all).
Windows system image and restore is good to have on hand.
For $20 Paragon Clone OS will make an exact (resized) bootable disk copy - I do that at least monthly, before patches come out, if not more - and when I want to move to or restore an SSD.
Depend on your motherboard how easy it would be but any X58 BIOS is easy and while 920 support (D stepping) was out by June '09 I have had half a dozen BIOS updates, last one a year ago.Still going strong.
DS 3.2 is no longer on Guru3D

Well the main problem is I never flashed a bios before, id need a good step by step.

I have a brand new win 7it upgrade, would doing that upgrade be potentially safer than flashing the bios?

With win 8, what happens after a year? Do you guys feel its better to do that over use this brand new win 7 upgrade?

Different motherboards use different methods to flash their BIOS. I use the USB flash drive to update my BIOS when it's available. A web search for "Flash BIOS (your mobo company)" should help.
