Upgraded FIOS speeds and now having issues Wednesday, July 25, 2012 12:05 PM (permalink)
Hey all!

I am hoping someone here can provide me with an understanding of why I am having problems with intermittent connection issues over 100Mb/s.  I will try and make this as short as possible.  Here is the breakdown:

  •  Updated my FIOS line speed from 35/35 to 150/65 about 4 weeks ago.  Company ran new cat5 line from ONT Box (Fios box that controls TV/internet inside home) to my router.  There is also a coax line running to router from ONT box so that the TV DVR can work properly with on demand etc.
  • Company updated my Router from Actiontech MI424WR to MI424WR GBE.  The GBE just provides for speeds OVER 100Mb/s.  The older router can achieve up to 99 Mb/s.
  • Now, for the first day, things looked okay.  Speeds were perfect (and continue to be).  However every 20-40 seconds, I lose connection for 6-10 seconds.  The lights on the router still are lit, everything appears fine, but I cannot browse...when I do it just says "looking for www. input website here".  I ran several tests and then confirm the outages and packet loss.
  • I made sure I tweaked my computers for this excess speed.  I tested on both x79 systems and they both have the same problems
  • I tried 3 different GBE routers and the problems persists
  • They replaced my ONT box, problem persists
  • So, if it is not the ONT box, the router OR my computers, what could it be?
It looks like I am loosing packets (about 10 percent loss) all the way from computer to router, router to next connection and so on.

NOBODY at Verizon can figure out what is going on.  When I hook up the old router, all my problems go away, but I can only hit 99 Mb/s because the router is built that way.  I am still paying for 150.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Edit:  Changed to indicate speed that I upgraded to

You are stuck in the same boat i am.  I went from 35/35 to Quantum 50/25 because my contract was almost up.  Since changing speeds my ping has been horrid.  Speeds are off the walls used speedtest to confirm.   I had my ONT and router changed.   Now on my 3rd router with the same persistant issue.  Only thing i can think is its on verizons end and they will not admit it or the routers they are giving out have bugged firmware.  Im using the GiGe or w/e its called the red and black router for 1gb link speeds.   Didnt have this issue prior to upgrade my internet speed.  Ive had a gig E router since  they were released (i have a friend whose a FIOS tech so i get new equipment sooner).   At any rate i think its on verizons end.  But we will never know cause as you well know by now FIOS tells you nothing and blames you for everything and fixes things when you arent looking.  I would give it some time quantum is new so im sure they have bugs in the system somewhere.

Thanks CD for the reply.  Your thoughts are mine exactly.  Verizon pushed this out so fast that they have yet to train 80 percent of their staff about what is going on.  When I ordered, I spoke with 3 different people who didn't even know this speed was offered!!

My guess is that they have yet to update either firmware on the router OR other hardware in my neighborhood.  Until then, I will use the silver router (not the red band) but pay for an extra 50 Mb/s that I cannot get.

I just ping tested my router with 20 packets 6 times just to verify my findings.  first set 0 min 151 average 181 max second 0 0 0 3rd trip 0 151 181 and so on for the next 3 tests its definitely this router :(

Hah!  I had the same problem.  I would get ridiculous pings also every minute of two.  First time my latency to the server was 3ms.  My next test was 25ms!  Argggggghh.  Frustrating.

Just and Update i called and rip verizon CS a new one (after frustrating a tech guy) they are taking 50 dollars off my next bill.  They still have no answers for my random "drops".  Nor any idea why my pings shot up after i upgraded.  In other words they broke something and won't admit it.  Oh well ill take 50 bucks off my bill next month lol.

Lol, hey you won the battle, now we have to win the war:)

I am going to call tomorrow and see if anything can be done.  At this point after researching for 4 weeks and getting nowhere, I am a bit tapped out.

Keep us posted. I was about to upgrade to the 150/65 but since you volunteered to be Verizon's Guinea pig I may wait =)

Problem solved.  So after a few days it finally went completely dead no signal to the router at all.  I called them up and come to find out when they changed my speed the had input that it was connected via ethernet from the ONT which would be fine if i had 150/50 orw/e that package but I am connected via coax.  The line was not provision right hence the constant Disconnects signal drops etc.  The tech said he was surprised i had internet at all.  So if i were i would call them up and verify that your line is provisioned right.  For 150 down you should have a ethernet from the ONT to your router not a coax.  if you do have a ethernet call and make them verify that they have it in the system as being connect via ethernet ( normal tech cant do this youll have to make him verify it with one of their network specialists) hope this helps you Johnny.
