What has been your favorite video card upgrade moment?
Saturday, July 21, 2012 6:02 PM
( permalink)
While waiting for my 670 to be RMA'd and replaced, a sad story you can read in my previous post. I have been thinking about all of the cards I have bought over the past several years, and I want to ask a question. What has been your favorite video card upgrade moment? Mine was going from a Radeon 9800 and going to a GeForce 6800gt. My girlfriend who is now my wife searched the state and found one for me a best buy about an hour and a half away from where we lived, drove there and got it (that is love by the way). I remember installing it and playing doom 3, yes doom 3, for the first time on it and seeing the game run at 60fps was a thing of beauty. Please share any stories you may have.

when i got this new build going with a gtx580 classified 3G i installed all my games and jumped in everyone of them to see how powerfull the card is...it didn't disappoint. i cranked crysis up... 1920x1080 - enthusiast - v-sync - 16Qxaa = 60 fps - 0-lag back then before the switch from amd/ati to intel/nvidia in 2005 i was running a ati 9800 pro it wouldn't play farcry lol so i went and spent $400 on the 6800ultra 128 BAM!! at that time it was the most beutifull, badass game. i gave that card to my uncle 2 years ago, he still plays games on it lol.

I remember anticipating the 200 series, and 400 series the most. So I guess 8800GTXs-> GTX 280s and then GTX 285s -> GTX 480s

Voodoo3 2000 PCI! My very first time ever opening a computer and actually upgrading. I remember how scared I was of static electricity as I carefully put this brand new video card in. It was Quake 3 that made me upgrade my IBM Aptiva 400 mhz power rig with 20 gig hard drive 128 megs of ram and my awsome 15 inch CRT. I went from playing Command and Conquer Red Alert to Open GL Quake 3. Good Times!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D109vdpM2as

Going from a 460M-equipped laptop to a full fledged desktop with a 680. Booted up Skyrim and put my headphones on and just wandered about in the snow for hours. That and hitting 1300MHz OC with my 680 classy today. That felt like watching an athlete I trained for years finally get his first great victory.

I always used crappy low/mid end vid cards on older computers. on the last system before joining EVGA crew, I was using asus board with pentium4 and xfx geforce. all was working fine ... but that XFX card was RMA'd twice (one time even after I sold this computer to a guy from my town LOL!) and the asus board was replaced once too (old one had blown caps), nothing was overclocked ... ... then I went with 790 system + Q9450 and GTX 260, man! that felt awesome it was like a birthday, and actually it was because I built my 790 rig right before my birthday (wifey agreed for such a present from out mutual account)

I went from an ATI 9700 pro to a EVGA GTX 285 years ago... that was a pretty ridiculous upgrade... the 285 still runs great too.

My favourite PC video card upgrade moment, was most definitely the time I got 2 x 8800GTS's. It was my first ever SLI setup. Getting the duo orb cooler for them was also a highlight. My favourite ever video card moment was when I got a CybervisionPPC video card for my CyberstormPPC 204e cpu card in my Amiga 4000.

I would have to say each upgrade has been significant. For the most part I think I do a good job at getting the most out of a card before I upgrade. The only time I did not do that was going from my sli 560ti's to my gtx670 4 gb sc. dont remember first card - added a Monster Voodoo 3d card - PNY ti-4200 - EVGA 6600gt - xfx7900gs - xfx 8800gt - evga gtx260 c216 - evga 560ti FPB - added another evga 560ti FPB - evga 670 4gb sc

I bought the bFG 6800 for doom 3 too...I was at a LAN party right after I got it .. People were wowed by its performance... that card had a melt down and blew smoke out the back of my case... I remember the Ati 9700 pro as a great card , my first water cooled card... The voodoos fx we're the only card back in the day. I rocked the two voodoo 2's in SLI and played quake 2 multiplayer every night instead of sleeping....that was my first addiction to online multiplayer The GeForce 200 series was awesome for mw2.. I upgrade too often to really see the difference now... upgrades are just to max eye candy at acceptable fps..

Mine is when I bought my 670s SC 4GB. I was sooo hyped up because my 670s where my first SLI setup I ever had. Also because how much VRAM I have in future proofing myself and being able to run a multi-monitar setup. I was always on a budget making a gaming PC tell now. Before I had my 670s I had me a single 560 SC 2GB. Don't get me wrong the 560 is a good budget card but it never did what I wanted it too like achieving the fps I wanted in games(at least I was able to overclock it to 975mhz on the core and 2225 on the memory). I love the 670s they are a great budget card in a way. If you catch my drift. Best card I ever seen for price and performance.

Going from my 7900 GTO to the 8800GTX SLI setup was my favorite (yes I've been on here since 2006 ). It was a huge bump in performance, not to mention DX10. Huge bump in technology and they were great cards that lasted me years. My cards: Geforce 5200, ATI 9800XT, ATI 800XT, EVGA 7800GT, EVGA 7900GTO, EVGA 8800 GTX SLI, ATI 5870, EVGA GTX 680

My favorite moment is rather recent. I placed my third GTX 670 FTW In my Z77 FTW board and it worked flawlessly. My 3D surround setup has no micro stutter and I can play everything, at almost the highest settings, with decent frame rates. Even ridiculous titles like Metro 2033 get 30fps if I back off on the antialiasing: happy!

Hmm, there are a couple for me. My original Voodoo card "Diamond Monster 3D" coming from a single card without a 3d accelerator, WOW GL Quake form the old software rendered was amazing. In more recent times, going from my 7900GT to a 8800 Ultra Black Pearl Edition, holy cow that was HUGE. Then my 8800 to my 480 was also a huge upgrade.

To those, who said, "when I got my 690" you all suck. Just kidding, Good stories so far. Some of your stories bring back memories for me. The mention of the diamond monster 3d card takes me back. That was my first voodoo card as well. I remember working with the patch to make the water transparent in glquake and what a big deal it was, my how things have changed. Rest in peace, 3dfx. For you younger guys out there the evolution of pc graphics is impressive when you look at where we came from. Keep the stories coming these are great and Evga, enjoy the free marketing campaign hehe (maybe change that RMA vanilla 670 to a FTW for me...)

Favorite moment by far was from no-brand gpu to Voodoo2 8meg. Then, I accidently got sent a second one, and I had my first SLI build. I just loaded up Quake 2 and shot the BFG and plasma rifle for hours watching how awesome the moving lighting was.

I'll always remember my final (and best) AGP card. EVGA really pulled it out for those who, at the time, were stuck with AGP. Effectively binned proc and outstanding cooler provided for some nice/stable OC.

Going from my GeForce 4 Ti4200 to a 9800XT was amazing. Every game I played required VSYNC because I was getting 500+ FPS in the games I was playing. I had a similar experience going from one 7800GTX to SLI'd 7800's. Finally, going from a single HD5850 to Quad 590's was incredible as well. Single monitor on any game was a joke--but finally making the jump to surround gaming, phenomenal.

In more recent times, going from my 7900GT to a 8800 Ultra Black Pearl Edition, holy cow that was HUGE. Then my 8800 to my 480 was also a huge upgrade. +1 I agree 100%. Playing quake with the Monster 3d card was OMG! That really got me hooked into pc gaming.

Probably the Riva TNT, or maybe the GeForce 256.
