Wondering if I should trade my Sr-2 for a laptop

Was checking out craigs here in MT which pretty much never has anything computer related, but notice a guy selling a Digital Storm X17 laptop purchased this month. They run around $2500-$3000 new. It has the mobile 580, Sandy Bridge I7 variant cpu, ssd, etc. He wanted a desktop so I decided to see if he wanted to trade. He seems interested. Now I just have to decide if it is a good deal for me lol. My Sr-2 is running ES 6 Core cpu's, has a 6970, 48gb ram, yada yada. A really nice system, but I chose my parts wisely and bought most of it used or on sale so I have around $1500 maybe less into the system. I was really only interested because I figured I could sell the laptop and build something bigger, better, or whatever. I'll take any excuse to build a new computer, I just like designing and assembling new systems. What do you guys think the laptop is worth used? Would this be a good or bad decision lol Here is his system, or close to it: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/laptoploadx17.asp?id=568685 Here is my PC.

Personally no, I just prefer desktops though. I have alaptop that has a broken screen paid 1400 for it new, brother borrowed it and the screen has been broken because of him for 2 years now? somehting like that. Thinks i should order a screen and fix it, t hen he will pay me for it... *shrugs* I gave up, not the only thing he broke either. Money wise though? Yes. You can resell the laptop and build an SR-x maybe :P

Ya, Sr-x is what I had in mind. Or more likely the Asus equivalent. My pc is more than capable, but I like to have current gen stuff. There is not much of a market for this specific laptop, so it is hard to find its true value. Only one on ebay with a 560m.

If you are thinking about the resale value of that laptop, you may not be able to sell the laptop for $2500 (my opinion anyway). It is not even a well known brand. Also consider if you sell it on ebay, you will occur Ebay and Paypal fees. You may end up with around $1500 or $1800 in your pocket, which will be about the same amount you spent on your desktop. If you directly sell your desktop, you may probably end up with the same amount of money though, I admit it's more difficult to sell desktops. If you go the SR-X route, you will have to spend more on the CPU's to gain a similar performance of your SR-2 system; most probably more than the money you earn from this transaction. So, I find a bit of gambling in the deal and as I said, in my opinion, more likely, you will not have financial benefit. If it was me, I would have thought more like if preferred a laptop over a desktop or vice versa then based on that, I might have considered the deal or not. I would have also tried to find more information on the possibility of reselling the laptop and its actual resale value in the market as a used laptop. If you want to keep the laptop for yourself, then this can be a good deal (disclaimer: I don't know about the quality of this specific model and brand of laptops).

Keep the SR-2. Unless you have to be able to do "heavy lifting" while on the go, it won't be worth it. A friend of mine shelled out $3500 for an Alienware back when they were "awesome". He regrets it to this day.

Agreed. Keep the SR-2. The value of that laptop will drop much faster than your SR-2, IMO.

Ya, I kept the sr-2. I think I'll just keep this build for a long time untill single CPU builds reach the same speed, then use it as a media server or something and build a single CPU build for gaming.
