Overheating GT430 :( Wednesday, July 18, 2012 10:15 PM (permalink)
I'm starting to have a problem with my GT 430's GPU temp rising and not stopping.  It started a couple days ago with some heavier graphics games for the card (Shogun 2, Aliens vs Predator, etc).  I have a fan profile set up to help but it has only delayed the rate of increase in the temp.  I'm not too tech inclined so outside of the brutally obvious solutions I can seem to stop it,  please help.

Might it be prudent to tell us what your temperatures are?  Tell us your ambient air temperatures in the case (whatever goes into your graphics card's fan, not random reading on a wall thermometer), what temps start at and what it rises to before you aren't comfortable with it?  How's the airflow in your case, any dust bunnies?  You said it start a few days ago, could it be heat wave related?

How CPU watts relate to degrees? - How can overclocking affect CPU lifespan? - TEC/Peltier definitions, formulas and temperature estimations

For Intel processors, 0.123 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].  This includes around 30% overhead, so it isn't minimum for operation.  TDP is not actual per CPU, it is a range for multiple processors to qualify for the same OEM cooler and power rating, and allows Intel to debut future processors in the same TDP.

      ok so for the temps.

its usually like 70 ferenhiet in my house so the air temp might be like 72 ish (no AC in the comp room).  there is a fan in the room blowing in the direction of the comp.  I'm sure it needs a cleaning but it has been cleaned somewhat recently.  Airflow is pretty good.  I stop using anything that heats up the card at like 85 celcius.  Most games stay in the 70 80 celcius range.  I just got over a heat wave here and its still doing it.

      Also I'm using
      Windows Vista Home edition
2.2 GHZ dual core intel proccessor
      1GB ram (not sure)

If it's still under warranty you could try the RMA route, but if it's not this sounds like it might be a TIM issue and reapplying some thermal paste to the card might drop the temps back down to normal.

It's a fairly easy process but can seem daunting for first timers you just need to be careful and have some rubbing alcohol q-tips and thermal paste handy.  Plus in most cases reapplying TIM actually lowers temps even lower than when you first get the card if you use good TIM, I dropped temps on my 7600GT/4850/4870/4890/8800GT/5870's just by reapplying better TIM by a few C's the last few years.

How would I be able to know/ find out if it does need to be sent in.  It still is under waranty.

Go to the top of the page and select Support, the under Customer Support  select EVGA RMA, then contact tech support and link to this thread then follow their instructions and they should walk you through the process. Good luck!  Oh and don't forget to have handy a copy of an invoice or receipt of when you made purchase.  You can upload it before or after contacting tech support but would make things go faster if you upload it before you contact them to try and speed up the process.
