FOLDING MILESTONES Sunday, July 01, 2012 5:52 AM (permalink)
Hi Guys
Over the next few days I'm going to be changing the way that I present the Milestones.

It will be much more accurate and I intend to add all ACTIVE users, who don't object to having there milesone published. Inactive users will be pruned/readded as appropriate :)
I would appreciate any feedback - public or private to the new data presentation.
All the spreadsheet work has been done by slythern and I credit all of this to him

Should you not wish to appear, then pm me and I will oblige

I look forward to your input  :)

First just want to say "thank-you" for taking over in this role for the Team awhile back.  Just have a question for you on the "inactive" users.  How were you thinking of defining a person as "inactive"?  I'm guessing that you are thinking of a long-term of inactivity such as a year or more?  Just wonderin' and figured it may be a good thing to explain it for the group in general.

Adding all "active" users sounds like some work, but I like that they would be recognized.  Does that mean you plan to add all "active" people even if they never requested to be added, or did I read that wrong.

I don't know if the Forum window allows it, but it would be cool if there was like a + sign where all groups are collapsed until you want to open one and look at the list.  Just a thought...and I look forward to others ideas for you.

+1 on all the work you are doing!!!!

      Just my $.02...

I think of any pruning is to happen, that the timeline should be two years plus. Lately I have seen some come back to folding.

My other thought... They earned it and the points are not taken from us when they stop or leave. So I see no reason to remove anyone as they have earned it.

I for one would not support any removal. What about those that have lost their lives and simply cannot produce? I would see that as disrespectful to them, us and the community.

That said, I can relate to the idea of course, and just my initial reaction to the question.

I agree with AB. Anybody that has folded and produced points for EVGA should reamin on the list no matter how long ago. You can't take away that they folded for team EVGA.

you realize this could be done automatically with a webpage using EOC stats
some fancy scripting(case - if statement) to place people on lists(one for each level) on a daily basis
then you can place a list box on a web page(with tabs) for each milestone level

you could also of course expand the top 20 PPD to top 100 producers too

we can add our own fallen soldier section (memorials) page.
maybe a comments section (that is delayed moderated - so nothing is said bad about any members)

and add a special honor section or folder of the week or folder of the month for deeds or acts done for the team. this would of course require a weekly or monthly name submissions
...ie  a page to submit a blind name in the pool

top ten will be notable mentions for the week/month

^^^ This is an awesome expansion to johnerz idea.

And if I may... Distributed Computing is everything as a whole. We are just getting started in a "Similar" idea here... Maybe we could have multiple pages or one. But it seems we are big enough now that maybe we should have EVGA chime in once we all get our heads wrapped around an idea.

My "End game" idea... A link like we have for EVGA Gaming... Takes us to the DC site where all this kind of info is at. Just like EVGA Gaming does.

I do realize our two posts may end up being a different topic, but my intent is to just offer other thoughts on this topic, that happens to include multiple ideas...

Maybe a sample screen shot, would help folks better understand your idea and comment.

                  Wow, great and OK :)

Firstly I appreciate the very positive responses, and you have given me food for thought.

A little more on what I had been turning over in my mind.
Currently I pick up the Milestones posted into Tanks original thread and pop then into the Millionaires Club sticky.

I was looking for a little automation and improvement in the accuracy, not depending on my eyesight. Currently my thinking was to (as I had mentioned) prune the results to include only Active Milestones. However reading the comments, I can understand the reasons behind the comments and I will look to change what I'm trying to do.

As we have had over 12k members contribute in the past, and almost 800 current contributors, to keep all Inactive as well as Active users, then I suspect that we will need to keep close to the original format, in that I only add Milestones for users who post up at least once in Tanks original thread - to keep the spreadsheet to a manageable size and make it easy on members to check on the progress of themselves and others.

In regards to XZ's ideas, they seem like a good idea, but tbo may be a few steps to far for my abilities (most of this will not be my own work as it is :)) Therefore I intend firstly to improve the current process and when we are happy that the Milestone list meets our needs I'll look into those
I specifically like the idea of adding the top 100 producers.
With the other ideas, I'm not sure but suspect that to add the memorial and notable mentions might need a sub forum to hold, but AB would know more about that than me I guess?

AB's links to the "Free DC stats system, also seems sound, not sure how much work would be needed to set it all up and if we could have different contributors across EVGA DC to update there own "bits"

All in all, you have provided me with lots of good stuff to think about and modify my original idea  :)
It would look a little like this:

milestone Milestone Status Display Name 24/06/2012
                  400-600 Million active      mmillion                                  574,734,736
                  300-400 Million active barbarossa (barbarossa17)
                  100-150 Million active desktopgeek                                 103,308,654

                                                    highfiver                                        133,108,386
                                                    MrAsh (Mr_Ash)                             131,034,788
                                                    Punchy
                                                    rjbelans                                         127,064,037

                  Just a quick update :)

The full stats for the Folding Team are also available on the link posted by AB  fantastic  :)

just look to the right and select non Boinc and then Folding - scroll down a bit and the full team stats are there (as also they are in the Extreme Overclockers stats published by Jason over there - great guy)

                  http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=team&proj=fah&team=111065

As you can see from the above, I'm currently only picking up "recent" contributions - more work to go there I suspect  :)

I already made an inquiry at EOC to see if they could create a new team list XML (which could make the job easier)

OK    Need to work on the format a little

Sadly i can't get the copy from Word option to remain formatted correctly so I need to go away and try again, as the ability to import  without extra work is key to reducing to workload, :(

If anyone has any Idea of how to import - copy/paste word doc or a speadsheet into the post whilst retaining the formatting, a quick instruction would be appreciated

OK    Need to work on the format a little

Sadly i can't get the copy from Word option to remain formatted correctly so I need to go away and try again, as the ability to import  without extra work is key to reducing to workload, :(

I been trying to get a hold of EOC web person to see if they can create an XML team list(points, position,wu) appropriate for
parsing for milestones, otherwise you have to go thru the flat file...filtering out only those with team 111065

if this works out we can have a web page that can do it automatically (of course me or troy would probably wind up doing it)

my suggestion would be to just create a google spreadsheet and update it and post a link to it in the thread, at least until I hear word from EOC

                                Update:

EOC is creating an XML URL that we can use to generate the entire team placing & milestones - ie rank, points, wu's
                                just got word back today

I'll give it a go at it once I get the link to produce a webpage that does it automatically for us
