That's huge. I wonder how well it works and it doesn't look like it leaves room for much else in the case let alone a GPU.

Or go with a much smaller heatsink with a quiet fan on it. I mean time and time again it's proven that yes fanless designs can work at the cost of space/weight but those with fans always outperform them.

That's what happens when you try to go fanless... The space needed to take away heat with lack of active air flow gets a lot bigger.

I've seen that cooler a couple years ago, it is big and a nice idea for what it is, but isn't for me. I could build around it, sure, but then I also couldn't; it would require a lot of modding. That said, the 100W TDP limit would still allow a Ivy quad almost 4.2GHz (assuming best batch with no voltage adjustment). Keep in mind, heatpipes are limited in how much heat they can transfer, usually 30-35W each (meaning the rest is absorbed in the base), so putting a fan on this cooler won't automatically support more than 100W; all a fan would do it make the temperature lower at the cost of noise and vibration. Still, I'll bookmark it for a future build. Heatsinks may go out of style but they don't expire.

Bkatt That's what happens when you try to go fanless... The space needed to take away heat with lack of active air flow gets a lot bigger. Still going to need some kind of airflow in order to keep the box from turning into an oven over extended periods of time. It isn't any different than how cell phones get hot through continued use really. That energy bleeds off and has to go somewhere...

While both active and passive heatsinks rely on conduction to transfer heat from the source to the heatsink by contact via TIM, passive heatsinks rely on convection to transfer heat the air; meaning they have a higher stable temperatures (above the typical enthusiast preference but still below Intel spec). Since heat naturally rises in air with no active air circulation, it is not like heat just builds up in a sealed case; most chassis aren't sealed anyway. Honestly, it is like some of you guys (not all, specially since number of thread reads is more than thread replies) are so used to the way you do things that you can't think of much else. rigmaster Dust Magnet I'd say the opposite actually. My X58 rig was case-less and exposed for two years on my desk behind my monitor, and the most dust collected was near fans, not without. Some dust yes, but not enough to be fussy about.

Wow, that is some heatsink! And those are some crazy pillars that you have to install to keep it above all the other parts of your motherboard. One thing that I can see that is a big negative from the installation info is that you're going to have to take the thing off every time you need to do anything with your memory, and you can kiss your top few slots goodbye (hopefully that's not your only real x16 slot!).

I'd wanna stick a fan on it just for the heck of it. Think a 200mm fan would fit?

Meh! Not the biggest cooler in the world. Check out my Rig, HR-02 Macho. weighs in at 1kg - compared to that NOFANS measly 763g , keeps my 2600k overclocked to 4.5 @ 1.272v at around 60c when folding. Doesn't block rams slots or PCIE slots either That's a Big cooler!

Not enough heat pipes from what I see. They could have easily added 4 more to make the cooling way better.

Awhile back some case manufacturer( I forget who, if it was even a case manufacturer) did the whole case side panel (mid tower I think) was the heatsync. Thay had heat pipes from the panel to the cpu. I have no idea how they got it installed onto the cpu.

planetclown Wow that is big. Silent tho, maybe ideal for HTPC? WHOA!!!!!! I didn't realize it was that big. OMG. you'd better pray you never need to perform any maintenance on your motherboard/components. Still stupid. you can get perfectly acceptable heatsinks with 17Db fans which are completely inaudible.

There is a must using low profile memory :(. Maybe it will be great if you want a low cost PC with an Llano APU (like A43300) ir a Sandy Pentium. I don´t that adding a video carf would be a good idea.

I have no idea how they got it installed onto the cpu. that would have been zalman, the whole case was one giant aluminum heatsink I was looking at old reviews of that just today, Zalman TNN 500A. The TDP limits would still qualify with todays processors and even a little bit of overclocking, though maybe not for graphics. I think they should bring it back, updated and cheaper [ than this] of course. I think Silverstone did the same thing too, but used liquid cooling against the case skin instead of a traditional radiator, I can't find it online, quadlatte? Apparently ther are other compact system companies making cases for HTPC's and heatpipes installed into the case, like this review of one by Streacom which has a unique arraingment of six-heatpipes. Hmm, the modder in me wonders how many of these case kits I could get just to have access to all those heatpipes and what I could do with it...I have been looking for surplus heatpipe companies, so I'm saving that link.
