SSD on the Marvel controller or Intel SB? Thursday, June 21, 2012 5:47 PM (permalink)

So, just got my first SSD, SATA III/Kingston HyperX, and I'm thinking about sticking it on the SB of my X58; avoiding the Marvel controller, altogether.

I think, in doing so, I'll avoid the hassle of dealing with an auxiliary chip. But, of course, the X58's SB is only rated for SATA II. With mechanical drive, IIRC, SATA II is not saturated. However, with an SSD, will SATA II be saturated?

So, I ask you, what would you do?

Specs, if relevant:

Gigabyte G1. Assassin
Intel i7 950
Dual 570's, in SLI
Couple of WD's, black
Corsair AX1200

Speeds on the Intel ports and Marvell ports won't make a significant difference for that mobo.

My OS SSD is on a non-Marvell Sata port aka Intel... I do run my WD VelociRaptor 600GB, 1k rpm, S3 HDD on the Marvell port for frapsing...

You can only run the SSD on AHCI or RAID... It won't make a difference either way unless you actually go into R0 setups.

I have the regular hyperX SSD

i noticed a huge diffrence between the marvel controller and intel controller...

the marvel on my asus motherboard has always had issues... bluray drive sometimes crapped out , odd failure of burninig disks...

always use the intel if you can , even if it means using the lower speed ports ... thats my 2 cents
