680 4GB FTW vs 690 financial paradigm Friday, June 15, 2012 8:15 AM (permalink)
All:

I have been contemplating what to buy but I have run into a financial paradigm.  If you want to run 3xDVI monitors on surround you have to have an active dp-dvi adapter which will from my best looking around anywhere between 90 to 120 USD depending on how long you want it to be.

That will make the overall cost of a 680 4GB FTW + DP-DVI adapter around 800 USD after taxes and all that.  Would it be advantageous for me and others to jump to the 690 since it is technically only 200 USD more?   Or is the 680 4GB FTW version actually a better buy?

I dont think you have to have an adapter now. I'm not entirely sure on the DP side of these though. Mines running just fine with the 2-DVI-D cables and 1-hdmi-dvi cable.

+1 Shouldn't be forced to run the DP as far as I am aware.

The only reason to get 4gb of ram is too ensure you do not hit the VRAM limit in surround gaming. If you got the 690, I am assuming you might hit it in a few games as it has 2gb of memory per gpu. I guess it boils down to what games you play.

Why would the 690 only be 2GB enabled when it has 4GB onboard?  Am I just missing something here?

A 690 is a SLI card. It's like having 2 680's in SLI only on one board. The thing with SLI is that the memory mirrors each other because each GPU can only access it's own memory. So it's not really 4GB, more like 2GBx2 with each 2GB block associated with one of the on board GPUs.
