This whole story is messed up on so many levels. I do understand that the law is the law and the judge did what he was suppose to do... But the law itself is what is messed up, Their is nothing putting the parents at fault when they should be.

The law seems like it is meant to keep people in school who are already taken care of by their parents are gardens, But they do not seem to understand that some are not this lucky and have to work other jobs to make ends meat and take care of others.

Only in jail for 24 hours. Why the school would take her to court is beyond me anyway. I skipped all the time. I passed my classes and thats all that mattered.

After hearing many versions of this story the end result is this That Judge is a jerk and he wanted to put her in jail. That girl has so much on her plate and shes trying so hard. and this guy just wanted to screw this poor girls life up. Seeing stuff like this just makes me outraged. This is completely unfair to her and those whom are being supported by her.

This is completely unfair to her and those whom are being supported by her. The judges in the UK are just as bad, worse even - here's why: A British 21 year old man 'hacked' into Selena Gomez's facebook account and posted malicious comments concerning her boyfriend, Justin Bieber. Now, guess as to how long his prison sentence is? 12 months! In contrast, a women carelessly placed a bottle of toxic plant feed next to her two year old child, he subsequently drunk it, and died of ingesting a toxic substance. The plant feed was used to grow drugs (her main source of income) and this is a clear case of death through child neglect. Now, guess how long she is to be incarcerated for? Yup, you guess it: 12 months! Oh, and to add insult to injury, the woman in the latter of the two cases was seen cheering as she left the courthouse... Sad The judges need to be sacked (or re-educated) and the law desperately needs to be changed.

first off why is she taking care of her siblings? especially at 17 years old? one lives with other relatives and the other sibling sounds like she is the same age maybe older so why can't that one take care of themselves or help out? why is she taking double credit courses and trying to take care of her siblings? since it wasn't in the article why was she at court? sounds very hokey to me. sounds like people are fighting for a cause where there is none.

Making an example of a 17 year old that has more responsibility than most adults that have children. If anything, that judge has made an example of him self and how our judicial system is majorly broken.

public education is a joke. They get apx. $100 per student per day. If enough parents pull enough students from school, revenues will drop and reforms will have to be made. Make an example out of one school, or an entire district if possible. I refuse to be held hostage by public education and will gladly move my children into alternative learning programs. Better education, and a swift blow to public education all in one strike. There is always a choice.

The title of this thread is misleading, the student had missed numerous school days and had previously appeared before a judge for truancy. The fact that she is a honor student is irrelevant. I understand the hardship she is experiencing, but she should not be exempt from rules/law just because she has an above average intelligence. Other means should have been found to assist the other siblings, one of which is a student at Texas A&M and the other lives with relatives in Houston. Yes, the U.S. Educational system is horrid, but all students should be subject to the same rules.

Nice personal attack there Fran. If I could report Voodoo for marking that as helpful then I would. Nobody is above the law regardless of their situation. I do support that. What I don't support is the fact that nobody else was brought in, like the guardians of the kids or the parents.

I'm struggling to see how it is constitutionally acceptable to fine and jail someone for not attending school. To my knowledge, someone is allowed to drop out of public education at the age of 16. This poor girl is 17 years old and keeps on trying to be successful, yet a stupid relic law that should have been abolished many decades ago, is actually making it harder for her to attend school. Like putting her in jail is going to make her attend school more. What if she is in jail on a school day? And fining her $100? That seems to me like it would make her miss school more in order to recoup the money that she worked so hard for. This whole case is absurd and should have never happened. If I missed something, oops, but this are my thoughts on this case.

Props to him for that and for standing behind his word. It's not solely the judge that the blame should be on. Why didn't anyone track down her parents and jail them? They are the real cause of the problem here. Both the girl and the judge seem to be caught in the middle here.

People will be racist, sexist, and descriminatory until children are raised to be blind of such differnces, are taught that all peoples are equal and theres no real diffence between us, we are all different yet the same.

You are free to your opinion, but in my opinion, the fact is discrimination exists because people let it. If you feel like PMing me sometime with your opinions feel free, I won't block you or anything but I will still have my opinion. Kinda goes back to the "Don't ask, don't tell" policy ya know? It seems evident to me that this whole issue is really a fault of the law in TX, not so much either her or the judge. However equal fault lays on the parents.

Man is capable of as much atrocities as he has imagination. To err is human, to blame someone else is good management skills People are, well, only human. We know that. The rule of law is borne out in identifying, condemning, and punishing those who violate the standards on which we all agree. This is exactly what we do in America. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

I do agree somewhat with that last part. However Fran, on the flip side there is always some who takes pride in being different which causes others to discriminate to make themselves feel superior. Just cause and effect there. I think we've taken the discussion off topic enough though, as I said, feel free to PM me anytime.

Bkatt voodoo do-er Bkatt This whole story is messed up on so many levels. I do understand that the law is the law and the judge did what he was suppose to do... But the law itself is what is messed up, Their is nothing putting the parents at fault when they should be. her parents left her from what I hard But that is not considered abandonment? 18 is the normal age to be a adult, But i guess in Texas it is different. The law seems like it is meant to keep people in school who are already taken care of by their parents are gardens, But they do not seem to understand that some are not this lucky and have to work other jobs to make ends meat and take care of others. Say's in the article she is 17 years old.

I support the judges action, because it draws attention to the situation. That is why it's being covered by the media. Now lets see if the media does the right thing, and sets up an account where people can donate, and if sociaty does the right thing and donates so she can spend her last two yeas in school, doing what she is supposed to be doing; Perhaps the law can do the right thing and locate the parents, and give them a room and board for a short while. tyhey are the ones that should have gone to jail.

franbunnyffxii Halo_003 franbunnyffxii stephen92 I'm struggling to see how it is constitutionally acceptable to fine and jail someone for not attending school. To my knowledge, someone is allowed to drop out of public education at the age of 16. This poor girl is 17 years old and keeps on trying to be successful, yet a stupid relic law that should have been abolished many decades ago, is actually making it harder for her to attend school. this is unfair in a civil manner as well Shes already going through high adversity, and shes trying her hardest, and this judge is "making an example out of her" ? Really? Whats to make an example out of? Showing that an a girl is working her hardest to succedd and some jerk of wants to dump on her life? Yeah some example. try as hard as you can kids! youre never gonna be treated fairly anyways! I would not be surprised if this is Corperate related, or racially charged, or the Judge is just someone wanting to screw someones life over. this girl is working so hard and this is bogus what the judge did. Ya know, there would be no issues of racism or sexism, or any kind of -ism really, if people would stop bringing them up. This is completely and utterly untrue. People will be racist, sexist, and descriminatory until children are raised to be blind of such differnces, are taught that all peoples are equal and theres no real diffence between us, we are all different yet the same. But not all people are equal. We can't be equal and unique simultaneously. As for her being an honor student, of course that matters. She obviously doesn't need as many hours as the other students to grasp the same concepts. Surprise, surprise, her intelligence isn't equal to that of the other students. Treating everyone the same doesn't work, since everyone is not the same. They need to drop the charges, let her take a GED or exit exam, and be rid of their faulty system once and for all. The laws are flawed, the education system is a joke, and there is no need to sit in jail for either broken policy. And the worse part is, tax dollars are being wasted on these shenanigans, rather than letting her do the best she can to contribute positively to society.
