Why can't Quad SLI 590's run 2D surround in BF3 using 3 120hz AW22310 Alienware monitors Monday, May 14, 2012 12:19 PM (permalink)
I have 3 Alienware AW2310 23" 120hz Monitors in 2D Surround running with Quad SLI on 2 EVGA GTX 590 Classifieds. With one monitor in BF3 I am getting an average of 190 fps in BF3 on Ultra settings. When I hook up the other 2 monitors my frame rate drops to 15 fps at the same Ultra settings and I can get as high as 40 fps if I drop the video quality to low but it becomes so choppy that it is unplayable. Is this what I have to look forward to? I have spent 2k on monitors and a stand not to mention the 2 590's. I find it hard to believe that 2 of nvidia's supposed flagship models 6 months ago are unable to run BF3 at Ultra settings on this setup. Is the game just too much for this combination of monitors and cards? One of the guru's at overclock.net said I would have to upgrade to 3 7970's or 3 680's to get the kind of performance that I want. Is that true and should I just throw in the towel on the quad sli 590's? Is there something else I can try to be able to play this on 3 120Hz screens with high or ultra graphic settings?

My current system is an ASUS P8Z68 MB with an I7 2700k OC'd to 4.7g on water, 16 Gig Ram, 1200W HC Antec Power Supply, Win 7-64 and 2 ea 120g Corsair Force GT's in raid 0. I also use a Corsair HAF X 932 Advanced case. I always run my cards at stock settings and keep my fans at 95% all the time using EVGA Precision. Temps on the cards run 25-30C idle and 60-65C under full load.

Any ideas out there, I followed all the instructions from Nvidia for hooking it up and Im sure im using the right connections.

Please do not hate the messenger...

Yes, this is normal. The 590's are only 1.5G Vram cards. The 500 series cards using Surround require 3G for those Ultra settings and it depends on the AA settings...

Try dropping the AA to MSAA or other settings (Leaving everything else on Ultra) and see if that help your situation.

Question, how long ago did you get the 590's? If still returnable I would and get the 600 series cards of your choice. I would hate to suggest the Step Up because of the loss in what you paid over what is in the step up now...

Sorry for the bad news. In this situation the Vram, is hurting your systems ability to perform as you hoped... Well and the raw performance ability of the 590's is also a limiting factor in this situation.

As a reference... I am running 5760x1200 @60Hz on a single GTX680 using the FXAA injector and see 60FPS 98% of the time with all my settings on High... I am certain once I go SLI, Ultra will be a no contest for these 680's... Now @ 120Hz I think TRI SLI GTX680's muscle combined with 4G Vram will be the order of the day...

Thanks, unfortunately I bought these about 6 months ago and didnt even get my system up and running until about 3 months ago when I bought my motherboard.  I just got the 3rd monitor last week and had been runnng 1 until then. Guess I need to find someone interested in buying 2 590's so that I can upgrade. My wife is going to kill me...lol

Just know you are not alone!!

I went through a similar situation myself last year... Surround is a gaming experience the way it should be, and we have to pay up to do it
