GTX 670 SC - Mine's going back tomorrow Sunday, May 13, 2012 1:02 PM (permalink)
I got this card on Friday, sent overnight via Amazon. Removed my old drivers, ran a driver sweep, shutdown Windows and installed the new card. Hooked up my main monitor via Display Port and never got a signal. I'm guessing it booted into Windows fine, but again, no video.

So, I tried it again with DVI on one of my secondary monitors and was able to boot into windows and install the new drivers. Shutdown windows, hooked up all three monitors and booted windows once again. It only showed video on the one monitor via DVI. I had to go into the NVidia control panel and tried enable the other displays. Doing so locked up my computer. After trying this several times I gave up, obviously the Display Port is not functioning correctly.

Played some games, and performance wise it seems great. I don't have any complaints in that regard. My games are not particularly demanding (Starcraft 2 and Portal 2 at 2560x1440) but SC2 performance was a measurable improvement in busy scenes over my EVGA GTX 285.

The deal breaker for me is the fan on this card is really damn annoying. Let me state that I don't think I have a particularly silent PC and the fan on my GTX 285 is far from silent. However, this card's fan definitely has a kind of a low-pitch hum or buzz to it. I find it rather unpleasant and I'm surprised to see reviewers on Newegg say how silent there fan is. It's extremely noticeable, even on idle. More annoying was anytime I approached a portal in Portal 2 the pitch would increase as the fan speed increased. It's really distracting, like somebody playing a buzzy theremin in my room. It'd be one thing if I couldn't hear it during idle, but after an hour I found I just can't live with it.

So, sad to say that I think it's going to be sent back tomorrow. I'm really bummed by the noise issue, my EVGA 7900 GTX was silent and my EVGA GTX 260 Core 216 SC was pretty tolerable too. The EVGA GTX 285 had more of a "moving air" noise that surprised me, but I've been able to tolerate it just fine for the past three years. Assuming my fan is normal, I'm left wondering which card to get, since the shroud and /or fan they are using for the GTX 670 SC is causing the problem. I've heard good things about the Asus TOP with it's custom cooler from a couple reviews, but I haven't bought an Asus card since my GeForce3!

See if EVGA will switch it out for a GTX 670 FTW card at no cost to you. The GTX 670 FTW is built on the same pcb and cooling as the GTX 680.

I will no longer do business with EVGA.

I'm betting MSI will be out with a Frozr model soon too.
I have an MSI Twin Frozr GTX 470 and the thing is damn near silent.

reference GPU cards are always more noisy than the partner's modification or watercooling, if you want silent.

Thanks, I'm not sure if I qualify since I experienced lockups but not artifacting. Worth considering if they were to extend that to me

Yeah, I've heard the Asus Cu II TOP is pretty darn quiet too. Love EVGA, but I'm disappointed in the fan. Wish I had seen this Anandtech review beforehand, they describe the same experience as I had.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 Review Feat. EVGA: Bringing GK104 Down To $400

Unfortunately the impressiveness of the GTX 670 begins to wane some here at noise. NVIDIA tells us that the GTX 670 uses the same fan as the GTX 680 but this seems questionable. 41.7dB is not significantly louder than the GTX 680’s 40.5dB, but there’s a definite difference in pitch compared to the GTX 680. The GTX 670 seems to have a low pitch hum/grind to it that GTX 680 didn’t have.
Meanwhile EVGA’s card fares the worst here, at the precipice of falling out of the quiet zone. Since it’s using what’s fundamentally the same fan and cooler as the reference card, the only practical explanation is that EVGA’s smaller diameter fan intake has a negative impact on fan noise.

Thanks for this thread, I will be avoiding that card for sure. I cannot stand loud cards. However, nothing can be as bad as that 480 was for me... the loudest, most annoying card I ever owned.

Keep away from reference 670's, cheap PCB and even cheaper cooler and HS. Nvidia must be making a killing on the price of these cards, consumers are getting shafted.

oh brother.....i have 2 evga 670's stock clocked version comming on tuesday...NOT what I wanted to hear...I have a 600t SE and it is far from silent but I defently dont want a "ginding" noise to dealwith either. I wonder if any of the evga guys could comment on this? Mathew or Jacob?

I'm in the same boat with 3 coming tomorrow, might be better off refusing delivery and waiting with so many issues cropping up on these.

Or not do that and if they don't work, talk to Customer Service and get a free upgrade to FTW editions.

Wasn't this supposed to be the 660? It would make sense that it is not a high-end type of card then. I will continue to wait for the 700 series of cards. Hopefully AMD's next card will slap Nvidia around and create better competition.

Still, this doesn't make up for the performance margin between the two.

Ouch. This is why I love capitalism, the consumer has a HUGE voice. If I don't like your business, not only do I not shop there, but I tell everyone else not to as well. Then, you go bye bye.

So yea i have been reading all the threads about 670's over the weekend.
Being one of the unfortunate owner's of the sc card, I can't help but say i have this nasty taste of sh*t in my mouth. And i am talking like crazy you ran to the bathroom to sh*t because those spicy tacos were past due.
Don't get me wrong evga's customer serv response was exactly the soap i needed to get this taste out. And at first it seemed like that premium soap made with peach and vanilla scents. Mmm. A treat.
Now that's a relief but that soap is days away (approval rma, invoice upload, credit card info, shipping time....etc)
In the meantime I could return this card to seller store and already be wiping caspian border clear in my heli at ultra settings with what seems to be better (debatable i.e better card but lower cservice) cards from other companies.
OR still with evga but on the 680 (out of budget though)
Now the 670 FTW is indeed a nice tootsie roll i want in my mouth asap. Especially after that soap and **** mixture.
However i don't feel the FTW is a big enough candy.
Just my thoughts....some people say it is more then a fair deal. Indeed it is in no way a bad deal. But it's lacking that final sweetener.
Since the 680's are testing well by admission from community members on these threads and the build seems to be way better,
I ask the question, like a kid full of hope on his first xmas in his life, wanting that gift that was just out of his range,
Will you give me a 680?
                                              forgot to say please :)
                                              Please.

Seems ungrateful. No NVIDIA or AMD partner would ever go this far to please their customers. Most would hang up if you asked for a 680 or have you just RMA (which is a nightmare at some other partners).

1st time posting and I am an owner of the 670 SC as well and I am delighted to see EVGA go out of their way to offer some reparations to those of us with issues regarding the 670 SC. As others have said other companies would never go this far for their customer.

I got my card friday and have been getting stuttering and crashes during the weekend even after putting the clocks on the card down. I just began the RMA sequence and I hope to have a 670 FTW in my hands by sometime this week.

Maybe if you think in business terms of one transaction.
Taking a loss to keep customers (i.e ftw 2nd day ship offer) is just business because you end up winning in the long run.
However customers vary in needs and wants as well as experiences and expectations.
Now they already have my money.
The 680 is only 100$ difference.
100$ in the course of a customer's life with a company is small compared to the 1000$ going from my wallet(8800 ultra, gtx 470 and now the 670, a 6 year old customer, ps you guys always forget my bday) to theirs over the long run.
Again they offered a card that is ~30$ more expensive and great service.

I get my 670gtx SC tomorrow and I am honestly hoping it works fine...but I have reservations.  My biggest fear comes from the fact that it seams that EVGA knows that there is an issue with the SC and by thier reply they seem to know that it wont affect the regular edition or the FTW.   It is such a hastle unhooking everything from my tower, I do not look foward to doing it twice.  I wish I could just send it back and get the FTW version, without opening the SC and going through the trouble.
                                                      1. Driver uninstall,
                                                      2. unhook everything from the back of my computer,
                                                      3. lug the monsterous tower to a work table
                                                      4. Bring my spare monitor and keyboard to the table
                                                      5. remove 9800gt
                                                      6. install 670 gtx sc
                                                      7. test
                                                      8. cross fingers
                                                      9. hopefully rejoice, but always worry in back of my mind about what the known issue is?  Will it pop up in the card.
                                                      10. If I have the issue....RMA. wait for reply
                                                      11. RMA accepted, uninstall drivers
                                                      12. reinstall 9800gt (evga that has worked flawless for me btw)
13 lug computer back to room
14 hook everything back up (lay on my back under a desk with a flashlight in my mouth so I can see where to plug everything in)
                                                      15. wait for new product
                                                      16. perform steps all over again when new product arrives.

I hope the issue is a few bad cards and not a overlooked glaring error in the 670 sc design.   I would really hate to go through all the steps above.

I hear ya, I'm still debating whether to just return my card directly to Amazon or work with EVGA to see if I qualify for an upgrade to the FTW edition. I guess my feeling on the fan issue is I have no interest in any EVGA GTX 670 except the the FTW at this point, since I already know the buzzing will drive me nuts while using my PC. I'm really hoping my fan is faulty and is the exception, not the rule.

Okay, my GTX 670 SC will be here tomorrow but the build it is going into will not be completed for about 5 weeks. If, when it is completed, I experience these same issues will I still be able to RMA for the 670 FTW or should I just go ahead and RMA now or refuse delivery when it gets here?
