Just so people are clear, this guy is from Australia (pccasegear is an Aussie retailer), so I would say that it is $2k AUD, not USD.
A quick xe.com says that currently that is ~$1960 of your paper monies.

I'll come back to this thread after Game Of Thrones, but I thought I would throw that out there Johnny so you don't get people coming back with a GTX 680 in their suggestions when we pay close to $700 for that card.

That would still be in budget with room to spare... Considering that that's only 1/3 of the budget.

In my opinion, skip the closed loop Corsair water coolers. They make more noise than some air coolers, cost more, and often perform worse. Either you get a top-notch air cooler for half that price or your go custom water cooling to do it right.

preaching to the choir, but he's strapped for cash and if you're gonna do it right do it right and that means a $500+ water loop :]

For gaming, this is the route i'd take.

                  Motherboard:
                  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131700
                  Processor:
i7 3770K if you can find one in stock. Otherwise a i5 3570K would do just fine.
                  CPU Cooler:

I have four of the 140mm versions, they are super quiet and push a good amount of air.

RainStryke's set up looks to be like the one I would personally go with, x79 is going to be pushing your buddy's budget pretty close. 3770k/2600k and knock it up to around 5GHz and you are ready to go, the Corsair closed loop will be fine as long as you switch out the fans, because the Corsair's are pretty damn loud. I would suggest the Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15's, they have a ton of static pressure that is great for pushing a lot of air through rad's.

Does your friend mind the 1 year warranty of B-stock componants, I have seen people here with EVGA bucks, (BR's Folding bucks, affiliate codes) build X58 systems for next to nothing) I myself have one I built with spare parts, EVGA bucks , and a case I picked up next to a dumster, all I had to buy was a HD, I won the GPU from EVGA, and the Super cooler. the 920 was left over from a 980 upgrade, the PSU from a AX1200 upgrade.  with the new boards coming out some people may be parting with their old gear, you may find someone parting with a 920 for close to the $200 that Microcenter had them at, coupled with $100 B stock board, and you have a cheap build started.

LOL. He did say his budget was $2k for his friend, so I doubt he needs to buy B-Stock items, let alone go dumpster diving.

On that note you could remove that ugly hunk of beige plastic for the old-school PC speaker and card holder.

Yes I know he said he had a 2K budjet, But if you think about it, You could throw 2(690)'s in a free system with a $2K budget,   Thanks for the advice on removing the plastic , I Will Do that Now.
