Evga 8800GT Fan Speed bios update (akimbo) Tuesday, November 10, 2009 8:28 AM (permalink)
Bringing this back by popular demand,  a

Fan Fix Bios for the Evga 8800gt 512mb, and other 8800gt related info (at bottom)

**** Please Note that Google Chrome currently does not support FTP links (12/7/10).  Links are verified working with IE8 and FF.  *****

The best driver for the 8800gt in many peoples opinion and mine, is the 197.45.  So I suggest to install that driver, unless you have another driver that is working to your liking.  All drivers (including the newest and beta's) can be found at http://downloads.guru3d.com/ .

For all those with a 8800gt that the auto fan is just sitting there @ 30%, or high temp concerns because of this.  And you don't want to use a 3rd party app to crank up the fan speed.

This Bios update that came out for the 8800gt Akimbo cooler, but it works perfectly for the STOCK cooler as well.  Ramping the fanspeed up as the temps increase like a normal bios should.   eg.  @ around 70c the fanspeed would have spun up gradually to around 65-70%.

**Please note the card WILL be louder, just like you turned the fan up manually.  If running in a HTPC you might not like that. :)

Windows XP/Vista/Win7 Flash Instructions

  • Download the appropriate update above, and extract files to a location on disk
  • Completely remove NVIDIA display driver from Add/Remove programs
  • Restart PC
  • Make sure no programs are running in the background, and double click update.exe from the extracted .zip file
  • Press “Y” to begin flash
  • After flash restart PC
  • Reinstall the 197.45 or later graphics driver
  • IMPORTANT: If running in SLI, each card needs to be flashed separately

Fail Safe installation:

What you have to watch out for is windows update in vista and win7 installing the driver while you are flashing (after uninstalling the current driver and rebooting).

To make sure this is not happening,  turn off windows update prior to unistalling the driver.

A good way to do it is:
-turn off windows updates
-Uninstall the current driver from add/remove programs.
-reboot into safe mode w/o networking
-run  driver sweeper (no-install, and remove driver remnants for nvidia display)
-reboot
-run bios update exe
-reboot and manually install the newest whql or your favorite driver.
-turn windows updates back to previous setting

Also make sure you flash to the proper bios, matching your serial number and stock clocks.  The update won't work if you are trying to cross flash to a differnet speed, it looks at your original bios before flashing for compatability.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This bios will NOT void your warranty.  As long as you apply the proper one (as with any bios update).  See the part numbers.

You have to match up your part# to the correct speed of the card, or the update won't take, you CANNOT cross flash it to a higher speed.!!
IT WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY IF YOU FLASH YOUR CARD TO A DIFFERENT SPEED, NO MATTER HOW YOU DO IT.

And you can make a back-up of your current bios if you like with GPU-Z HERE

Also there is always some inherent risk when flashing any bios or firmware , so do so at your own risk
Also it it not neccesary to update the bios just to update the bios or to fix a problem not related to fan speed.

Hope this helps,   If the link dies from the old forums (was very hard to find, hense this post to bring back),  PM me I have the bios as well.

Nick

I specifically checked with Jacob that this bios is great for the stock cooler and will not void your warranty.

      original: EVGATech_JacobF

Yup :) Even if you are on a reference EVGA card, I still recommend this BIOS if you want the most optimum temps

And true, flashing it with the bios of a different speed or part# will void your warranty.

Technically, yes.  A little stupid, huh?  You must flash it with Akimbo SC BIOS otherwise you will void your warranty.  You can then overclock it with Precision to SSC speeds or higher if you like.  But the BIOS must match the part number it was intended for.

            Thanks alot,

I couldnt get my 8800GT SC working without artifacts @ higher clocks then stock. I clocked the core from 650 to 675 and ATItool showed artifacts after 1 minute :S.

After this update though, I set the clock to SSC speeds (700/1000/1748(Shaders actually slightly Higher then the SSC card)) and it runs perfect!

            SO thanks alot.

ps. Is the Akimbo cooler still available?

              Great to hear.

No, the akimbo cooler is EOL.    You might be able to find one on ebay every now and again or the market place (if you get your post count up to 50).

But there are other coolers on newegg that fit the 8800gt.

like these that was very popular

Currently getting this. I have a 8800GT SC (512-P3-N802-AR) and downloaded the N802_AK.zip. Uninstalled video driver and rebooted. No programs in background. Did a backup of the BIOS with the GPUZ.

What should I do? I'm worried about a power outage. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit now.

Please, answer this fast. I'm so worried.

EDIT: Current BIOS is 62.92.23.00.02. I think it is the original BIOS. Should I still update to this other BIOS? I get 80oC while playing and max fan speed it gets is 50%

EDIT2: I rebooted alright. Installed the newer NVIDIA drivers and will see how the fan do now.

EDIT3: 75c idle (both cards, in sli mode). Fans get to 35%. I've set them to 50% manually, now 70c. Dunno why it is so high... they were not like that in the past. I don't care about noise, I just don't want them to get this high temperature for nothing. Should I remove the cooler and reapply it? Should I buy aftermarket coolers for them?

First, are you trying to flash one card at a time?

What are the stock clocks for your card(s)?  Some of these cards were mis-labeled.

As for your temp issues,  start small, try to clean the cards with compressed air.
                  And check case air flow.

You can run the fan higher if you want, it won't hurt the card.  I normally ran mine @ 70-80%, or just ran the akimbo bios.  Sli'd cards will always run a bit hotter that a single card.

Relpacing the TIM or getting an aftermarket cooler are always options, if your comfortable doing that.

It's alright now I think. I made some changes in Rivatuner and let's see how the temps are doing.

I clean my computer with compressed air often. Did it the last time a week ago.

Tried to flash the bios with only one card and got that error.

My PC is freezing when I play games and ONLY when I play games. Video and other things are normal. Don't know if it's video or not, but even at 70°C it freezes sometimes. Putting a big fan at the side of the case makes this happen less often, but my temperatures are not that high (60°C max at CPU and Northbridge when playing). Thinking that it can be a memory problem.

                    That's it.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to run memtest http://www.memtest.org/
on each stick individually, and see what you come up with.

Also it could be a driver issue, try:
uninstalling the display driver, restarting in safe mode and run driver sweeper http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-(no-installer)-download-1672.html
a couple of times, and restart and install the latest or try an older driver that you know worked good for you.

Sometimes the newer drivers suck for slightly older cards.

I was using a relatively old driver, Nick (mid 2009). For the memtest, I though about it, but didn't had time to do it yet.

Installed the newest driver yesterday, didn't have any lock up yet. My fan profiles at Rivatuner seems to be doing good. My two video cards were about 70°C at 100% fan speed while playing. Still need some time to test though, because it's not always that it freezes. I'll try playing TF2 later, as it is the game I play that takes most of my video cards.

                        Thanks.

                        EDIT: Froze when playing.

when I have a {newly configured} SLI setup {with one card with 62.92.16.00.22 (newest twin card I have aquired) and my original is 62.92.24.00.02}  Yes when i bought card1 new I had to get tech support because it got hot and died all the time, they sent me a bios and all was well.

So just about 20 mins ago, new used card musta overheated...this is the second day of me haivng SLI.   before last night I only had one card, got the matched card from another system.  FWIW, new Antec case (twelvehundred) with 8 fans, and the computer shut itself off ( I assume heat issue shutdown caused on new used card?

when I got rebooted the new card(2) was up to 77c.  old card(1) is at < 67c.

Are you saying I have to REMOVE the cards to flash them?  I guess I mean I have to remove my known good card, put card2 in main slot, flash teh bios, then repeat?

                          Thanks in Advance!

Yes you have to flash each card separately, in the main slot.  Along with the other steps above.

                              Nick,

this is my 1st sli setup, 2 8800gt cards.  when I am in my racing sim, only one card gets hot, is this normal?

The bios helped as the thing isnt getting as hot, and is stable...  yes I flashed both cards in slot 1 the other day, when I posted...  Luck would have it,  right after I posted I waited then assumed that your answer would be YES.  Then, I went to bed.  I had just installed the drivers that Nvidia yanked, lol.

I really want to get a newer card now.

Make sure SLI is turned on in nvidia control panel and game option if available.

Make sure the game supports SLI, do any other games have the same affect?  Try turning on the SLI indicator in the nvidia control panel (top menu).

The top card will get hotter, especially with 8800gt's,  heat rises to the top card.

                                  Hey guys
I have two EVGA e-Geforce 8800 GT SC (512-P3-N802-A1) and installed these Coolers on it:
                                  http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16835106112
                                  The Bios Version is 62.92.24.00.27
                                  NVIDIA Driver is 196.21
                                  EVGA Precision 1.9.1

I set manually the Cooler on 100% and applied it but it doesn't go faster!
After I flashed the cards with the Akimbo Bios (EVGA 8800GT SC AKIMBO (512-P3-N802-XX)) it still doesn't work.
I flashed both cards seperately. Does anyone know what should I do?

                                  Sorry for my bad English.

                                  Marcel

I recently upgraded to a new sytem with my 8800 GT. I'm running windows 7 64-bit. After replacing the PSU today I still had the same crash. Apparently the fan was not changing automatically with the temp. Also, unless I overclocked my system to 675 precision didn't even show GPU usage. When I changed the fan speed to approximately 60% with F@H running my GPU to 99% I no longer crashed as it had previously. Can someone explain to me where the error lies? Nvidia has been claiming that the 0x116 BSOD and the TRD recovery errors are not their fault. I've been messing with this issue for a couple weeks. I spent a good chunk of change on a new PSU which was okay because I'll probably need more power when I eventually do get a newer card, but how do things get so bad? I mean I've been a fan of EVGA since I first heard about their lifetime warranty and bought my first card. But who's responsible for all these issue that seem to be reoccurring?

The Duorb cooler uses a molex connector, the only way to control it is hook it up to a fan controller,  or convert it to a 3-pin MB connector and use speed fan, on a compatable motherboard.  Or just use a molex and run it at full speed.

The graphics card bios or precision will only control the output from the graphics card pcb fan header.

                                      @bsnyder80

If the issue is resolved with a fan speed increase, either you can go for the above compatable bios, or use precision to set the fan to a usable level.

Also you can try to RMA.

They are pretty much the same as the latest bios revision, with the a tweeked fan profile for the akimbo cooler, but in turn they are the best fan profile for the stock cooler also, a must for any graphics intensive application too.  If you don't want to run a 3rd party app to control the fan speed.

That's awesome because my bios version is 62.92.24.00.01, so this way I'll get bios update in addition to the fan fix. Thank you!

Also, where should users go to check for the bios updates? I remember there was a "BIOS" option in the download page, but now I can get only drivers, but no BIOS.

                                                  Nick,
I have an akimbo ver 512-p3-807

I appear to be running BIOS - 62.92.24.00.27

My fan speed doesnt appear to get above 40% and it runs pretty hot. Am I already at the correct BIOS level?

If not, which Flash should I use?

                                                  Thanks,

I added the original bios fan fix update to the end of my post so it now includes all the bios updates for the 8800gt

                                                    @ buffalufalo

You have the OE akimbo and should have the akimbo bios directly from evga.   So you shouldn't have to do anything.   You could use precision to speed up the fan manually.  If there is a fan speed problem.  Or make sure you have good case airflow and make sure the card isn't built up with dust.

                                                        Here is a list:

The last two don't matter, they only refer to the warranty type.

I flashed with akimbo bios n806, my gpu clock is 700. Did both cards, now I get an error when enabling sli "display driver nvidia windows kernel mode driver stopped responding". Both cards work perfectly fine when not in sli (tried both of them in the main slot)
