Nikko's ASPEN X79... I think I'm done with it for now! Mod-mesh cable cover in place! Sunday, April 08, 2012 10:24 AM (permalink)
So basically I have been getting rid of my X58 parts for the past month.  Ever since I got rid of the SR-2 I never really had a system I liked (two X58 micros, a 4-way, two i7 920s, a Xeon 3520, and an i7 970), but I think I found a happy place with an ASUS Rampage Gene IV (would have been and EVGA if they had a Micro out) and a happy little i7 3820(well its not little looking at it side by side of a i7 920)...

Down with the Consoles and let's bring in the real Gaming gear!

Now cooling in that tiny case is darn near impossible.  So I built an external water cooler and I am using two quick disconnects to maintain the loop's prime and have the cooler sitting by the open window...  Its still in Ghetto mode with me using a nonposting 680i to drive the two Delta PWM fans which put out about 150CFM each on a Phobya 240mm rad.

4-11-12 UPDATE PICS:  Cooler Tether Cable complete!!!!

Now to work on the innards of the case a bit more (Modright Hex Mesh Panel and cold cathodes on the way!) and wait for my GTX580 Black Ops edition to arrive!!!

CCFLs Installed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not quite there yet!  Tuning in progress.

Modders mesh cable cover installed, final mod.

Thanks every one!  Yeah it does look like some mad crazy nuclear device from a movie or something LOL.  I got my Frozen CPU order in on Saturday and will be making the Tether Cable to hook the cooler up to my motherboard which will clean a lot of the clutter up.  It will be my first time sleeving so wish me luck!

As for overclocking I have already hit the 5ghz mark!!!   I'm all uber excited about it and will be tweaking the voltages further.  I will update specs on that final OC but for now what I do have thats solid is I'm running Bclk @ 125mhz and Multiplier at 40.  Voltages on Vcore started at 1.5V but I am working it down currently.  Seeing low 70*C on my CPU under Prime95 1024K load testing with Hyperthreading.

There are 4 hard drives in that rack.  There are two 1TB WD Blacks for storage, one 500gb WD Black for OS and programs, and the 150GB WD Raptor is for games.  Haven't decided to go up to SSDs yet.

My next major project for the build is the tether cable which is now completed.

                              Here was the original design...

At the end of it I simplified the design with just two Molex cables with 12V PWM takeoffs and the two sensor PWM cables.  Its enough to drive my chiller and with thermal shut down enabled on the motherboard I know I am safe from any pump failurs however later I will add a temp monitor and an alarm for the pumps.

                              The mess...

                              The build...

                              The Cable at last...

I couldn't find the heatgun at work so the heatshrink was all done with a bic lighter... and my thumbs are now numb...

LOL it's one of the older models, they quit making them with the window for some reason but it adds to the build.  As far performance boost  I have not tested it much yet but I'm not expecting anything beyond the looks to be amazing.

Ok ran into some issues with he cable and the PWM control cables.  I am still working on this with the help of Ty_ger07 (big Thanks for assisting me!!!)  But with the PWM sensor cables unplugged the fans run maxed out, which I don't mind since they work so now I have gone from this catastrophe...

                                    To this....

Now to tidy up the cooler and case with some cable management and a few other aesthetic mods to make it more pleasing to the eye and not a heap of parts.... More to come!!!

A bit more on the case.  Its designed and built by GoneCruzing, who has his FS post for custom cases and case mods here in the forums and is great to work with!

Here is the case when I had my X58 setup in it and displays the original illustration I did which I had GC laser on to the case window.

The case was a big factor for my current build as I needed something smaller for moving around to LANs when I go home.  This case fit the billet perfectly with it being a quarter of the size of my Danger Den Tower 29 case which formally housed my mainstream rig for the past two years.  The whole computer rig has been built to be broken down into modular parts for easy transportation with this case housing the main hardware.  Its a great case!

Tinkering around with some graphics (note the first image in OP)... I may be custom skinning the case with some art.  so stay tuned for that later.  I have a 480mm X 480mm hex mesh modright panel on the way to make a shroud for the extra cables in the bottom of the case and a dual 8" CCFL that will arrive Monday.

Back in South Carolina for the weekend to visit family and frag out with my buddies in a LAN party tomorrow!

Here is the rig all setup at the in-laws.  I just installed the CCFLs today.  Still have to make a shroud to hide my mess of cables and a fan cover for the side of the case.

So how about I booted up into windows @ 5.0ghz with a Vcore of 1.45V.... I'm gonna have to test this out and see how stable this is but my RAM is at 2ghz with 9-10-11-27 timings.

The more I look at 5.0ghz in CPUz the more I'm liking X79.  I would have a smoldering pile of plastic if this thing was i7 920 X58 LOL.

SO I finally got around to playing with some case graphics.  As you see with my sig and all the digital art I have spammed this thread with you will find the case graphic similar.  My printer is going on to its 4th or 5th year now and the darn print heads are garbage.  This was the first graphic I have printed off of it in a few years so it looks like crap.  The paper is one of those stickable photos so its pretty easy to stick on or remove when the time comes.  I gave it a quick spray down with a clear coat to help prevent the image from being scratched easily.

I will be working on this more to perfect it as I feel this part of the mod is falling short of my expectations but do let me know what you think about it!  Thanks for reading!
