I am a little confused, especially since I saw Ivy chips that seemed that they were sale............. And no I wasn't drinking, but the 2.0's PCI-e or PCI's can be changed like a firmware update into 3.0's.?? I'd love for my all 2.0 USB's and PCI-E to change to a 3.0, but I think on my Sig link down below of what new Motherboard i'll most likely be gettin next month or in June, they have 3.0 support on the MB itself, and thought that would be the reason to get that ASUS MB that my sig link has. It's nagging as i want my next computer to last for another 3 years, not withstanding GPUs and voltages and getting the right PSU, as I have a 1.2 kilowat PSU already. Ok so our 2.0's will have changed from Nvidia drivers 2.0 to 3.0 for our 680s and beyond then.??

I'm going to try and help straighten out your 'confusion'. The GTX680 cards (all models and variations) are PCI-E 3.0 hardware certified based upon IEEE standards and has nothing to do with firmware or drivers. In other words, you can not take a PCI-E 2.0 card and make it a 3.0 card. Using PCI-E 3.0 cards in an older motherboard that does not support PCI-E 3.0 is not a problem as they are backward compatible to PCI-E 2.0 and 1.0. The only thing you lose is a bit of bandwidth and that is usually only a limitation when playing games at very high resolutions beyond 1920 x 1080, such as 2560 x 1600 or 2560 x 1440. At those resolutions, PCI-E 3.0 bandwidth can begin to be realized as an advantage with the extra bandwidth it offers. The bigger deal is making sure your new motherboard has both SATA 6Gbps and USB 3.0 features. Those types of ports are highly recommended especially with everyone moving to solid state drives which actually do make full use out of the bandwidth provided at 6Gbps, whereas conventional mechanical hard drives don't come anywhere near that kind of bandwidth. And there has been an ever increasing number of USB 3.0 devices being released and not just thumb drives. External optic drives and hard drives are beginning to join the USB 3.0 bandwagon. Looking at the motherboard (provided in your hyperlink), I would highly recommend that you buy a Z77 chipset motherboard. The Z68 chipset has been effectively phased out. The Z77 chipset is superior to the Z68 chipset in every way. Remember, you did say you wanted your next computer build to last 3 years. That means buying the latest and greatest hardware on the market. I hope this helps you gain a better understanding about PCI-E 3.0 and which motherboard you should get. I would highly recommend Asus, EVGA, Intel, or MSI as the Z77 motherboard of choice. Good luck with your build!
