Samsung 830 SSD vs. Intel 520(Cherryville) SSD Friday, March 30, 2012 7:20 AM (permalink)
Ok pretty simple, I am going to be purchasing one of the drives today, and am still not sure which one it's going to be. I will be going for either the 128GB Samsung or the 120GB Intel drive. I currently have a 320 series Intel and it has been flawless for me so far, so I really do like the Intel reliability even if it isn't the fastest SSD on the market ( it is a SATA II drive anyway). So if anyone has one of these drives and would like to share your experience with them, or if anyone has any comments, they would all be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot for taking the time to check out this thread!

I have a couple 256GB Samsung 830 drives.  I just recently got them, but they haven't given me any problems so far.

I note they're rated for a different speed than the 128 GB models, so this might not be a very good judge of what to expect, but the two of them in a RAID 0 array give me just under 1GB/s read and a little over 900 MB/s write.

I can't comment on the Intel drives other than to note they are Intel, so they are likely going to be extremely reliable (even if I am still skeptical about the sandforce controller).

Damn those things are fast in RAID 0, from what I have read the 256GB and 128GB Samsungs are fairly close in terms of performance. Thanks for sharing your experience.  Will let you know which way I end up going, probably end up going with the Samsung, it is a very pretty drive if I must say. And MaximumPC mag makes it out to be the best thing since sliced bread. I also like how the controller is run off of an ARM 3-core die.

Maximum PC is not the most reliable and neutral source for hardware info/news/reviews but I have to agree, the Samsung 830 128GB SSD is awesome. Installed over 40 windows updates in under 90 seconds with that drive. That includes the time it took to agree to the licensing terms too. Computer booted and Windows login/startup services all ready in 15 seconds tops before adding a password to the Windows 7 account.

I think Intel is making a mistake going with Sandforce (my $0.02)

Looks like I am going to be going with the Samsung SSD, one other question I have been wondering. I am using an EVGA P67 FTW motherboard, and I am pretty sure that the SATA III connectors are powered by a Marvell Controller, will this present any issues with the Samsung drive? I will also be using my 40GB Intel 320 as a data drive along with my 1TB standard HDD. Will that cause any problems as well? I also had two crashes which made me reinstall my Windows 7 Pro (OEM), so I am a little considered that the product key might not work, I'm pretty sure I have used it three times. All on the same machine however.

I vote for Intel, since they have the lowest failure rate of all SSD manufacturers according to an article I read a few months back.  The Intel 520 series is also a bit faster than the Samsung 830 series I believe.

Honestly...they are both top notch drives and you'll be please with both. I would say which ever one you can get a better deal/faster delivery on would be the way to go in this case. If it's the same on both, flip a coin.

Yeah they are both within 5 bucks of each other, and I'll be buying from newegg I suppose since everything in town has a $50 premium on them.

Newegg has a promo code only for today for $30 off, bringin it down to $139.99. I think the decision has been made. Now... does anyone have any information regarding this Marvell issue that I bought up, if it even is an issue?

You will never be able to tell the difference only in benching the drives.

And even then one will win some and lose some benchs.

The sammy has the marvelle controller and the Intel has the SF2281. Either is a very competent drive. You can't lose either way imho.

Does anyone know about the multiple installs of the Windows 7 Pro OEM disk, I really do not want to have to fight that once the SSD finally does get here, I have had to reinstall twice on one motherboard, and once on the EVGA motherboard.

The P67 boards should have native Intel SATA-6 anyways. If I remember correctly, there are 4 SATA-3 and 2 SATA-6 with H67/P67/Z68/X79 chipsets; any seventh or eighth port is likely Marvell though.

I personally love my Samsung 830. If you do end up going with an Intel 520, just remember to NOT use Intel's AHCI driver. Their driver is great for SSDs, but for some reason it tends to not work with their own 520 series. Also, Intel is the fixing any new issues that arise with SandForce gen2, and is much quicker at fixing them/releasing new FW.

Got the Samsung installed today, gave me a 7.9 WEI score for Disk Drive, everything is a 7.9 except for my CPU which is a 7.8. So far I am loving the new drive, it feels so much better to not have to worry about filling it up so fast, since I have the Intel 40GB in there along with a 1TB HDD.
