My First SSD ever!
Wednesday, March 21, 2012 3:49 PM

I've finally hopped aboard the SSD club. Just got my 64GB Samsung 830 in yesterday. Popped it in my secondary rig and watched it fly! Here's how fast my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit boots! This puts my 3x Samsung Spinpoint F4 HDDs in RAID 0 to absolute shame!

I like that brushed aluminum look on the SSD. But I'm sure you appreciate the speed even more.

Yupyup. Spendy little buggers, but man SSDs are fast. Remember to run your WEI score, so Windows knows not to defrag on it and enables TRIM.

My WEI score... keep in mind this is my secondary system with an i3 2120 and 4GB of DDR3. Also popped in my GT 240 since it's a P67 board so I can't use the integrated HD graphics. Also, here's the benchmark score from the included Samsung Magician software

taxiwarez is it bad to raid 0 SSDs? depends on drive... if you have a drive that does garbage collection well, nope hyperX, Intel, m4 and samsung does those well

I think mine seemed slow because my mobo takes awhile before it gets to the Windows load screen. I also noticed that the password screen is there right after the Windows logo screen goes away, so if I had entered my password and hit enter, I wouldn't even see a password screen... instead it'd land me right at my desktop.

I think my OCZ Vertex loads windows at around 15 secs. I bet direraptor22 SSD would be a little better. Nice benchy, but I was hoping more for AS SSD and atto. Has anybody recently tried the Anvil storage bench, and got it working?

What should I use to bench? HDTune? Something else? EDIT: Used HDTune. I had to use a USB3 dock on my work laptop, so I have a Seagate 7200.10 750GB HDD, a Crucial M4 120GB w/ 009 firmware, and the Mushkin Chronos all for a side-by-side comparison. Spinner M4 My new Chronos ~Fus

yah ssds are addictive... couldnt stand the 120gb space on my agility 3, so picked up a 256 crucial m4 as well on my end. was thinking of going something faster... and sided on cheaper and more reliable. hopefully prices will drop eventually ill just raid this bad boy when they sell for under 200 bucks... haha when will that be... *** uploaded a quick bench of the crucial m4. I am sure the Sammy and the Corsair will be faster, but more for people to be able to compare. basically... I felt the speed difference 99.9% of the time wont be noticed, but the M4's are supposed to be amazingly reliable. I have no idea though as its only been 1 day.

Hey bhk1004, can you go back on AS SSD, click on tools, and click on copy-benchmark. It should pop another window with 3 categories called ISO, Programs, and Games. Do the bench, and post a pic of it, plz. Thank you!

The bench you just did is basically a speed and load time bench. If you notice the left side says Speed in MB/s, and the other says duration in seconds. You have three categories: ISO programs, Programs (Windows, Anti-virus software, others), and Games (PC and MMOs). Now this is just my theory on it, but these are averages. So your Crucial M4 might be loading Windows, after post when it loads up, at 8 to 9 sec. You're PC/MMO Games roughly load up at around 6 to 7 sec. Like for example, BF3, when you load into a game, there's that little loading period, or when the server is switching to a new map, there's that loading window. It probably takes you roughly around 6.52 sec + some deviation for you to actually load up. Listed below are pics of my OCZ Vertex3. Keep in mind, it's my OS, and it's 1/3 full: So ya. You can see your Crucial M4 is better than my OCZ Vertex3 (sataIII). Your Crucial M4 has a better read and write speed. It's access times are lower. So, you're overall score would be a little higher. If you notice under games, the duraction time on mine is almost twice, compared to your SSD. On the other hand, the duration time for programs, mine's a little quicker than yours by a few seconds.

yah something ive noticed researching SSDs... no drive is #1 in all the categories... they all give and take a little bit here and there... i mean basically as long as you have a top tier SSD you will be fine. microcenter had the 240gb agility 3 up for 215 after rebate... and I had a 15 dollar MC coupon... man... I was so tempted to just buy 2 of those and run them in Raid 0. basically id have almost double the space, and probably right around the same speed as my crucial m4 for around 80 bucks more. still might go that route... have 30 days to think it over.

Ya. Find more info about it. From what I understand, RAID 0 will increase your storage and read/write speeds, but it won't change how much more quicker your SSD load the software. I could be mistaken, but that's what I've heard from other users. I've considered investing in 2 Kingston HyperX and putting them in Raid 0, but I'm more inclined to wait for the 690 and 7990s when they will make an appearence soon.

That is the best way to look at it bud, you nailed it. There is no one ssd that will win out on all the different bench's. The marvelle controlled ssd's will win when you introduce incompressible data, but when using compressible data the SF drives takes off, so pick your poison. here is my best results from a single M4...
RIVE X79 3960X 2 x EVGA 680 HC 16 GB Gskills 2133 2 x Samsung 840 pro 256 gb 1 M4 128 GB ssd storage Dell 30" & 24" ThermalTake 1200
