Accidentally touched the gold pins on my 560ti, scared now Saturday, March 17, 2012 2:20 PM (permalink)
Hi,
I don't have my parts yet but I was making an unboxing video for my 560ti 2gb superclocked that I bought last night.
the rest of my parts I ordered off Newegg and won't be here until tuesday.
While I was putting the card back in the plastic I accidentally touched the gold part. I'm scared I ruined the card as I did not ground myself or take any precautions as I did not expect to touch anything vital.
This is my first build so I don't know if there's a chance I ****ed up my card.

Thanks. My mother also touched it as I don't have fingernails and asked her to get the sticker about removing the protective film (that ironically was UNDER said film) with her long fingernails. She was sitting in a fabric chair that could cause static and also touched the pins.
Sorry if I seem paranoid, but this is my first build and I've had too many static horror stories D:

Very very small chance you did any damage .. typically you would know if you did by feeling the static discharge. I have worked with computers for many years and have yet to zap anything by touching the cards contacts. Never hurts to ground yourself beforehand .. but the chance is still pretty small even if you dont. (Then again .. some people are walking static traps and get zapped on a frequent basis)

Well it's quite humid. florida is hot and wet so I don't think I'm exactly a static trap.

I am sure you are fine TTP. I have handled all of my video cards and had nothing like this happen. I live in florida as well so yah, static trap unlikely unless if you walk around on carpeted floor dragging your feet.
