Dual or quad core gpu's?

Has there been any talk on having dual or quad core gpu's? I don't know much about the electronics/theory but I am curious as to if this has ever been thought of or if it's in the works?

JaskarnSidhu Has there been any talk on having dual or quad core gpu's? I don't know much about the electronics/theory but I am curious as to if this has ever been thought of or if it's in the works? GPU's are already hundreds parallel processing 'core's on one die. The newest models are over a thousand.

The newest models are over a thousand. So the GF110 gpu's (GTX 570, 580, 590) are dual cores? The GTX 580, for example has 512 processing cores per GPU the GTX 570, has 480. You're kind of mixing CPU and GPU architecture. They are not the same.

So each gpu has hundreds of cores in it? Why haven't there been any hundred core cpu's?

JaskarnSidhu So each gpu has hundreds of cores in it? Why haven't there been any hundred core cpu's? No offense, but this isn't the section for a detailed dissertation of hardware.  Simply put, for consumer CPU's, the software isn't designed to run in parallel on many cores at one time. We are now just getting to the point where we can utilize more than 4 effectively.
