Intel Engineering Sample Q2WV (E5645 in retail package) and SR-2 Friday, February 10, 2012 8:02 PM (permalink)
I just basically wasted the whole of today, 10 Feb., trying to make 2 of these engineering samples Q2WV CPUs work in my SR-2 with absolutely no result. An absolute waste of time.  The only thing I get is the FF debug code and that's it. Has anyone on this forum made these work on the SR-2. I would love to know how or any indication as to how to proceed. I have a pair of E5606 that work flawlessly with my SR-2.

Thanks for any help.

Brows for a custom BIOs with the micro code for those CPUs.  IIRC The micro code allows the BIOs to recognize the CPUs and for a lot of ES chips (which are not officially supported) their is usually no micro code written in the BIOs for them.  I had this issue with a pair of ES 5530 Xeons when I first built mine.  Although I thought ES 56XX series Xeons wouldn't need modded BIOs for the micro code but I could be wrong. Another thing is they could be bad CPUs.  Try testing one of them at a time and see if either will boot.

there are a lot of threads recently on problems with the es 5645's before anyone else mentions it, I guess I will state that discussing es chips is a tos violation. having said that I will say that I bet you guys are all buying the exact same chips from each other via flee bay, lol

I mean really es chips are made only for intel to work out their bugs and allow manufacturers to test their setups. they have absolutly no guarantee to work at all although a lot of them work great.

Save yourself the trouble and hassle of engineering samples and buy retail-boxed versions. Engineering samples are not worth your time in an SR-2.

I had a pair of 5645 EG samples before.  Same issues.  Swapped the CPU's slots and they worked fine.  Try it.

              Hi:

I am the OP for this thread and got a message from EVGA community that somebody was reviving the thread. Man, you probably don't have a day to waste. So, save yourself the grief.  These won't work with the SR-2, period. You are going to pay 80% of the retail value, and even if they do work, anytime you will have some sort of "esoteric" major bug, you will have the nagging doubt that it might be the CPU.

That is, if they did work. But they won't.

              Again, S.A.V.E.  Y.O.U.R.S.E.L.F  T.H.E.  G.R.I.E.F.

I guess its worth , but what bugs does it have ?
@fvevga at last did you make that processor work on your sr2 ?

                thanks

I love mine. 24 cores of beauty *Removed*. No problems what so ever. Most stable low powered chips I've had. If I could have afforded retail versions I would have, but I view ES chips like currency. You can have it in your possession and no one cares what you do with it, but its technically property of the government. Intel has the rights to these chips.

ES Chips are tempting that's true, but as any other bargain you'd have to consider if it's worth it and if you have a warranty or the seller is trustable and assures you they work in the same setup as yours.

If you're comfortable with a $300 coin-toss that either gives you something worth $0 or something worth $1000 then that's ok, but if you can't afford the coin-toss then don't do it :).

3dmark 11 doesn't seem to scale correctly. I know vantage could only use 12 threads. Other benchmarks like geekscore, and primebench are more accurate. If you check out my posting in the sr-2 forum you'll see some of the scores. My ebay seller offered money back if the cpu's did not work with my MB. I would not have purchased otherwise. Always good to check. Paypal pretty much always favors the buyer if you were open a dispute anyways.

Just an FYI after clarifying a few things...

We will delete any posts (or edit portions thereof) that mention "acquiring" ES samples in an unofficial way.  Note, there's nothing wrong with discussing ES chips; it's only wrong if people are selling ES chips, or talking about obtaining ES chips from anyone other than Intel.

So this is a gentle warning and an informative post. Carry on...
