Re:Quick Overclocking Guide for EVGA X79! Saturday, July 14, 2012 8:12 AM (permalink)
I'm currently @4.5Ghz HT Off with my Classy and my 3960X.
Before i was with all power saving features set to "DISABLE" and i was rocksolid, now i turned on "C1E" and "EIST" because i want that the frequency goes down when I'm in IDLE. The system looks stable (like before), should i have many problems with these features turned OFF?

Another thing that i saw.. i tried to work with the BCLK and the BCLK Ratio. For example i tried with the 112.5Mhz frequency (BCLK Ratio = 1.25x). Everything was stable except that i lose my USB 3.0 ports. I don't know if the problem was the 'strange' BCLK frequency or the ram frequency (i also pushed them up for that test, a bit over them specs). When i came back to my settings (4.5Ghz HT OFF BCLK 125Mhz) USB 3.0 ports returned to work.

As was pointrd out to me the BCLK has to be 100, 1.25 and one other anything will make you lose ports, Nic etc. I HOPE there is a Bios Fix for this ONE of these days...

I've been able to get 4.2 without changing any settings. I can't seem to,get my ram (rip jaws 2133+) past 1867. Any tips? Running a 3930.

Sadly this overclocking method is far off, and does not work at all. Everything I have tried just resets the motherboard -- and Windows 7 never see's the overclock on top of it. Not even able to take full advantage of my memory, which kinda erks me.

Sorry I purchased this motherboard. Between its overclocking lack-luster and the lovely Check-sum error after updating the BIOS (from Windows or DOS) has pretty much told me: this is the last EVGA motherboard I will purchase. I love EVGA, but someone screwed the pooch on this board.

Also, I am not "Danny......" on this account. I have no idea why my account shows me as someone else when I log into my EVGA account.

EDIT/UPDATE: Sadly all of the 3.0 USB connectors on the back of the motherboard have just died. Nail in the coffin: my last EVGA motherboard purchase. Really shocked at how bad EVGA has gotten :/

You need EIST enabled for throttling.

Do anyone have a setting that can help me overclock my X79 Classify intel I7 3930 processor with a EVGA GPU 660 FTW Signture 2. I have try several without any luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Got yourself a little toaster there with that high of Vcore voltage. I keep my 3820 at 1.41 volts with 50% vdroop at 4.625 G. Never goes above 1.43.

My max temp under constant load is 72c, what temps are you getting?

Never mind, I see you have an H110 on the cpu.

I tried taking the Vcore down to 3.3v with various vdrops and also no vdroop. I could not get it to pass Intel  Burn Test on high setting without killing the vdroop and raising vcore to 3.56v. Under heavy load is rises to 4.1v and drops to 3.56v at idle. When I was using the Intel Spec vdroop, it would stay steady at 4.1 at all loads. I will try this config for now and look at getting an H100 or H110 setup.

By the way, nice looking rig. I need to enlarge the hole in the rear plate of my case so I can hide my cables like that.

                                  I'm running 4.6ghz @ 1.32v
Idle temp 28-30c and under full load 35-40c

Could you post pics of your Bios settings, similar to HoracioArcondo's above.

Need a template for the X79 boards.  I would love to see some of the settings everyone is running.

I'll check out that vid when I don't have to multi-task between work, this, and grad school! Ha!

Interesting, discovery just now... I turned Vdroop back on and enabled Internal PLL override and set the Vcore to fixed 1.425 and it's now perfectly stable at 42x, 66ºC, 1.376v Vcore at load.

140 GFlops in LinX at 4.7 seconds a run with just 6 threads.  Very nice.

Before I had Vdroop off, PLL to 1.9v, and Vcore at 1.4v and it was drawing up to 1.482v and temps were in the mid-70s at 42x multi and it would crash/restart within seconds.  I thought I had a poor chip for a second but it appears that simply reenabling a few things really helps.  Thumbs up to this mobo for making OCing even easier than originally thought.

                                    --EDIT--

So it appears doing the above with Vcore set to 1475mv and PLL set to 1.9 does the trick at 46x for me when leaving Vdroop on and turning on Internal PLL Override.

                                    LinX 6 thread - 150+ GFlops
                                    LinX 12 thread - 128+ GFlops

I've been using the Intel Spec all along, but not the PLL override.

I will try that too, Thanks!

Working at 38X125=4.75G Just passed Intel Burn Test on High setting 7 run set. I may have my 38X OC back, Thanks Again.

Hey guys. I would disable Vdroop, enable PLL CPU volt overide.

set the Vcore to fixed voltage. then Start with 1280mv then work your way up to a stable voltage.

I have varied my voltages and found that I can run 1.28 to 1.32
                                      stable.

Those higher volts you guys are trying is going to destroy your CPU or motherboard and even worse both. even when I was on air and heat sink I would only be at around 48-55c under load @ 4.6ghz 1.32v

I would say yes to that until you find your max OC. Then I would go back and find a percentage of vdrop that works for you as well. Other wise your Vcore is going to spike every time you load it.

                                          50% vdroop keeps my volts around 1.45 - 1.46

I'm telling you guys, Kingpin laid it out very simply.

I'm using his model to go by except the memory timings. I have to leave mine on auto for the mem to run at 2400mhz.

I feel like this overclocking guide needs to be updated. I'd love to know what revision OP was using because it seems after revision 039, no OC works.

                                              What revision should I use?
What settings (BCLK, CPU control voltage, CPU multiplier)?

I currently can get my 3820 to 4.3 GHz (simply by increasing the multiplier to 43). I once was able to get it to 4.5 by setting BCLK multiplier to 1.25 and leaving the CPU multiplier at 36.
