GT 220 Excessive Fan Noise... BIOS Update? Jacob Freeman says,"Yes!"

I was wandering through the Newegg comments section on the GT 220 SSC card when I came about this response from EVGA: Thanks for the review. We apologize for the inconvenience, and have listened to our customers concerns regarding the fan noise. With that being said, we are pleased to announce that an update is available for EVGA 220 cards which allow silent operation with no impact to performance. With the new update applied, the card will operate quietly in all applications such as DVD playback and web browsing, and will increase the fanspeed based on the GPU operating temperature if necessary for 3D games. In addition, new incoming shipments will already have the update applied. To download the update please download the following file and follow the below instructions: ftp://ftp.evga.com/bios/1227.iso To install: * Use CD Burning software to burn the .iso image onto a blank CD. * Reboot the PC and ensure that the CD Drive is the primary boot device. * Press “Y” to initiate the flash, then remove the CD and reboot. Driver reinstallation may be necessary. Thank you, Jacob Freeman Can anybody shed some light on this subject? Is it true? Does it only apply to the SSC cards?

Welcome to the forum! Very puzzling announcement. I am interested in hearing the official resonse. My understanding was that the output to the fan could not be modulated and must run at 100% all the time. Apparently there must be some sort of method of modulating the output. :S

The fanspeed is dynamic and will increase/decrease depending on the GPU temp and GPU load.

Does this work on the vanilla DDR3 GT 220's?

I have the latest BIOS, drivers, etc. Previously I was running Windows XP, Vista and 7 on this PC, and under all three systems the card perfectly adjusted the fan speed to the temperature. However, whenever I'm in Ubuntu (with latest drivers from nVidia), the fan will always be at 100%. I've checked to see if I can place a manual fan controller in between the fan and the card, but the only ones I can find in local shops are 3-pin, while the fan is 4-pin. Anything I can do about this?

Looks like Legit Reviews posted an article today on the EVGA GeForce GT 220 SSC DDR3 Video Card. They also have a small video they made up showing the audio levels. Seems it is still pretty loud with and without the BIOS update.

Just bought this POS and can't stand the excessive noise the "fan" emmits. First video card I have ever purchased that I will try to return within 24 hours. EVGA let everyone down on this one. I mean who would release a card that has more noise then all my other fans combined - at idle no less. And yes I downloaded the newest drivers and precision and it still is has way more noise then my rig with 2 GTX285 in quad SLI.

LOL! It's louder than my GTS 250.. Tiny fan at high RPMs = Epic Fail. Not only Epic Fail in noise levels, but also Epic Fail in fan reliability.. High RPM fans burn out faster.. The question becomes, is this EVGA's fault or is this nvidia's fault?

Sidicas The question becomes, is this EVGA's fault or is this nvidia's fault? It is safe to say that it is NVIDIA's "fault". NVIDIA designed the product and EVGA sells it for them. EVGA didn't custom design or modify the GT 220 for their needs since the product doesn't have much profit margin and design changes would eat up little profit which is there.

EVGATech_JacobF The fanspeed is dynamic and will increase/decrease depending on the GPU temp and GPU load. I am still mistified how you do that with a two-wire fan. It is a two-wire fan, right? I guess you just assume that at a certain fan header voltage output that the fan will spin approximately X speed. You would have no feedback from the fan to know if it is indeed spinning the speed the card would desire, you just assume that it spins the proper speed and modulate the voltage depending on core temperature. Is that correct?

Yes, also slight correction on my last post, it is only controlled by GPU temp, not load.
